I'd be interested in any stories or other info someone may have on or about him. I also have his citation for a Purple Heart he recieved. I'm proud of what he did and as an active duty member know some of what it's like. I've even been stationed in Korea- not even CLOSE to what my dad remembered. MAYNARD JOE MATHENY wrote on March 2, 2002 City and State: WHITE OAK TX Unit: CO B 73RD HVY TANK BN Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I was assigned to Co B of the 73rd Hvy Tank Bn at Fort Benning, Ga. in Sept. 1949, when I was right out of basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. We shipped out from Fort Benning, Ga. to Korea in July 1950. I was with the 73rd until November 1951, when I was rotated back to Fort Hood Tex. During my time in Korea, I was a tank driver for 6 months, a gunner for 6 months, and a Tank Commander for the remainder of my tour of duty.Capt. Beaver was my company commander(KIA) at Suwan Korea, while we were attempting to secure the airbase there. John Martin was also KIA at the same time. I spent a total of nine years in the army and decided not to make a career of it when the Vietnam war started. I was discharged in May 1958. Keywords: |
