Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew a PFC Charles J Talbott from Balt, MD. He was in the 71 AR CAV MED TANK BN 1 CAV DIV. He was KIA July 24, 1950. Also any information about his unit, or where I can find any info about his unit during the summer of 1950. I have a letter that has the name 1st lt Carlton Price on it. The letter was being returned to his mother because he was KIA.

Update on the 71st Cavalry

Comments: The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Squadrons of the new 71st Cavalry Regiment has stood up at Ft Drum NY. The squadrons activated in September 2004 and since then have been preparing for future deployments. As the S1/Adjutant for 3-71 Cavalry, I've been entrenched in the personnel construction over the past several months. We are now almost fully manned and getting ready to deploy. We trace our military lineage back to Charlie Recon Troop, of the 701st Tank Destroyer BN. I would be interested in hearing from veterans of this distinguished unit.

Comments: I was looking for anyone that I might have served with in Korea. I was a tank driver in I believe the 71st Heavy Tank Batallion, I was shot in the head and can't remember for sure. I am trying to find some people that I served with and help with my rank. The only name I can remember is Coutzi.

Please Help.

Reactivating the 71st Cavalry

Comments: It is very exciting to report that three squadrons of the 71st Cavalry will be reactivating in August/September 2004 at Ft Drum with the 10th Mountain Div. I will be working as the adjutant for 3-71 Cav RSTA (Recon, Surveillance, Target Aquisition). Its been fifty some odd years since the 71st saw action in Korea and today we are mustering the old unit once again. I would love to hear some stories from some of the vets to pass on to our unit historian. Be in touch, Cav out Front, LT BERKOFF

A co, 71st Tk Bn. was first in combat in Korea w/ 24 Th Inf Div early
in july 1950 before the 1st Cav landed.

We First fought with Gen Dean at Teajon. After the Cav got there we
were reassigned to the Cav. We lost 20 of our 22 light tanks {M 24} in
the first few weeks of combat. We could not penetrate the armor on the
Russian tanks with our 75mm guns. After we lost our tanks in combat, we
survivors were enough to form a maachine-gun platoon. We spent the
next 30 days on the line as infantry.

We were awarded the combat infantry badge. This combat was in the
bowling alley.

NOTE:

My name is Edward Brazelton. When compiling any history of Co. A
71st Hv Tk Bn., I would appreciate the opportunity to provide some
input into the compilation.

I joined the company in April or May of 1950 at camp Chigasaki, Japan.
I was with the Co. until we were deactivated as a unit. We lost 20 of
22 tanks in the first few weeks of combat. After this we were assembled
into a machine gun platoon. We spent 30 consecutive days on the line
as infantry north of Taegu, in an area called the Bowling Alley.

I am presently detailing, as much as I can remember, in writing. You
are welcome to this information.

I am dismayed at the total lack of acknowlegement in the history
books, including the 1 Cav Div History in Korea,of the contribution of
the Men of Co. A 71st tk bn. We were deactivated because of our
decimated numbers.

Thank you.
