Comments: I would also like to hear from Donald E Kopp, 16.5 mi. S/E of Kokomo, Indiana, who was stationed in Owada during 1951-53, and Herschel Hankins of the 24th Division who was on R&R at Camp Drake some time during the same period. Hank may have married a little Japanese girl named Tomiko Kimura.

http://sujan.hallikainen.org/BroadcastHistory/uploads/My3Years.pdf
6 MB file, takes about 20 min. download using dial-up.
Fair amount of technical detail on communications. Nothing on the Photo Unit of the 8235th AU, sorry.

Comments: My uncle Second Lieutenant Crays was a member of the 71st Signal Service Battalion, U.S. Army. On June 30, 1950, he was a passenger in a C-54D Skymaster transport from the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Wing. While on the ground at Suwon Airfield (K-13), South Korea, the aircraft was destroyed by a North Korean bombing strike. All 23 on board were killed. Does anyone remember such an incident? My father named me after my uncle and I named my son after my uncle, a uncle I never meet, but heard about all my life and have pictures of him. His real son, Clark, knows very little of the incident and I want to help him put it all together. He was a baby at the time and I beleive never seen his dad in real life. Any info or pictures of the base would be nice. crayzys@aol.com

Comments: Served in Crypto center at Pershing Heights from early 1954 to Aug, 1956. Was a great time in my life working with a great group of people. Many memories of the Rocker 4 club and Company A at Hardy Barracks. Returned to Tokyo numerous times during the early 70's on business. Hardy Barracks was torn down in '05 except for one small section at the front. The area around Roppongi is densly built up with many of the foreign embassies located there. Would like to hear from anyone who was in the 8235th at that time. I can't believe it took me this long to find this website.

Comments: MY Korean War Experience
My MOS or Military Occupation Specialty was 1187 telephone carrier operator, also called a repeater man. I was trained for this work at The South Eastern Signal School in Camp Gordon Georgia. When I arrived in Korea I was assigned to the 59th signal support company near Chunchon. Our signal support company in Korea was a part of the 71st signal Battalion located in Japan. During the time I was in Korea I was stationed at 3 locations. The first was a site called Manhattan hill which was a radio relay unit, bouncing radio signals from mountain top to mountain top supplying communications for the infantry. This site was dismantled after the war. The second was a site called Tornado, a telephone carrier & radio unit just overlooking the DMZ. I can still remember the North Korean soldiers guarding the 38th parallel with their armaments pointing at us and our armaments pointing at them. This was located 30 miles North of Seoul. The third was called Novocaine switch, a telephone carrier unit supplying telephone & radio communications for the 34th Medical Battalion. This was located near the Chunchon electric dam. The 34th went back to the states while I was there and was replaced with the 163rd Medical Battalion. Even our switch board name was changed from Novocaine to Norseman switch. Medical Gi's ran our switchboard and I was the lone signal core man servicing our carrier telephone and radio equipment. We also helped the medics where we could, removing shrapnel from unfortunate citizens who set off mines etc, also many Korean babies were born here. Thousands of U.S. and Korean military people were treated for their wounds, and also thousands of GI's got their booster shots at this medical facility. It was located in a Hugh quonset building. We lived in a tent even through 40 degree below zero temperatures but our telephone and radio equipment was also located in a quonset building. Pot belly stoves tried to keep us warm. We had a house boy named Pak Sung Yong who kept our tent clean and washed all our uniforms. I served in Korea in 1953 & 1954. Went to Korea in the General SS Walker, an army troop ship with 5,000 men and women on board and came back on the SSN Anderson, a navy ship. My most memorable time was when the 2nd division held a Christmas party for Korean war refugee kids who had lost their families in the war. The look on their faces when we gave them their presents still makes me cry. The presents came from the United States from families of service men and women who were stationed there. Wonder what Korea looks like today. God Bless Korea & those of us who fought and died there.

My mother (Christine) traveled a lot in Japan 1949-52 with my father and has a wealth of genealogical papers that includes: "AFRS Scrapbook," "A Story of Japan," "This is Japan," and a couple "Tokyo Traveler" issues of the 71st Sig Svc Bn. I am especially interested in any info on the Scrapbook and Stories of Japan as the papers that I have a onion skin carbons (legal sized paper) -- who wrote those stories (if my mother did, if she worked with officers' wives, etc., on them) and if there is a cache of them in archive somewhere. I also have a lot of slides if anyone has ideas on how to restore or publish them (some of Emperor).

Richard Howe wrote on 2005-01-08 21:06:15.0
Comments: My Dad, Robert Dale Howe, of Pennsylvania, was mobilized from the Enlisted Reserve Corps in December 1950 and arrived in Japan the same month. He had been drafted after WWII and served two years (6/48-6/50)at Fort Dix, NJ.
He went to Fort Hood, TX and then on to the Presidio in San Francisco where he waited to board a troop ship non-stop for Japan.
They pulled seven Soldiers off of the ship when they reached Japan and sent them to the Dai Ichi building because they needed typists. The rest went to Korea as replacements. (Dad took typing in High School to meet girls! Smart man.) He ened up as a teletype operator in the Dai Ichi building with B Company, 71st Signal Service Battalion.
He came home a Corporal in November 1951, and he still pulls rank on me when necessary.
He told me the duty was good and he even played some golf. He was on the second shift in the message center. He remembers the Japanese lining up to see MacArthur arrive for work in the mornings, and the day Ridgway came in from Korea to take command.
He also talks about sitting with wounded Soldiers in the hospital in Tokyo and reading to them or writing letters for them. He says he saw some of those who were on the ship with him come back through and that one guy's hair had turned white almost overnight from cold and fear.
I used his DD214 and the Army Awards Regulation to do research and got all the awards he should have been given re-issued a few years back on his 72nd birthday. He kind of liked that.
He is healthy and 78 years old. He has been living well in Florida since shortly after coming home from Japan.
God bless all of you old warriors for serving your country.

Comments: Looking for any of the fifteen 805s, two officers, or the two powermen from B Company where were placed on TDY to 4th Sig Bn in September 1950. We left Yokohama 08 September on the USS Randall and returned to Yokosuka on 30 December 1950 on the Mt McKinley.
The 17 individuals were:
1LT William R. Tripp 1LT David R. Young MSG Oliver W. Baker SFC Herbert J. Suir SGT Robert E. Browning SGT Ysmael C. Paz CPL Cyril J. Ernest CPL Raymond A. Gorman CPL Carter L. Simpson PFC Heyward B. Allen PFC Robert H. Davis (powerman) PFC James W. Nally PFC Paul E. Mills (powerman) PFC Frederick H. Stenkamp PVT Robert J. Katilas PVT Renus E. Rich Jr PVT Glenn R. Vermilyea
A few weeks ago I checked the Social Security Death Index to see if I could identify anyone that might have passed on. The only one that I could identify with any certainty was Glenn Vermilyea. His birthday (11 October 1931) looked about right and his SSN was issued in Minnesota and I remember that he was from Minnesota. The index shows he died in June 1961 so he would have been only 30 years old at time of death.
I have 22 photos taken between 22 September and sometime in November that I think Nally gave me copies of after we returned to Roppongi. They have held up pretty well and I can scan them and get copies to anyone that didn't get them or no longer has them.
I also have a copy of the TDY orders (Secret at the time of issuance) that I found after we returned to Japan. Don't remember how I got5 it, either the Telecon Branch files (where I worked after we got back) or from the Co B Orderly Room.
Would like to hear from any of you (or your descendents)to find out where life has taken you.

Comments: I would like to learn more about my father, Harvey Lewis Wittman when he was in Company C, the 71st Signal Service Battalion. He was stationed in Tokyo and worked in the Dai-Ichi Building. He had his basic training in Fort Ord, California. In Fort Monmouth, New Jersey trained in Radar Repairman Gun Laying Equipment Course. I think he went to Japan on USAT Nelson M.Walker in November 1949. He met my mother, Fusako Hakagoshi(later changed to Yamada), in Tokyo. They were married in Tokyo on November 23, 1951. Their wedding was witness by William Richard Sterling and Kimie Yamada. Both my parents have passed on. Thanks.

Comments: I am looking for information on the incident in which some members of 71st were killed at Suwon AFB on about 28 June. One report had a C-54 hit by a bomb from the North Korean air force. It was mentioned in the story of MacArthur landing at Suwon to inspect the War Zone. Am interested if anyone can further enlighten me as to the facts surrounding the 71st KIA on that day.

Comments: I was assigned to the unit in July 47 as a raw recruit out of MOS school Fort Monmouth,NJ. My specific assignment was with the "Inter-Com Section". Our office was on the top floor of the Dai-Ichi Bldg. We were responsible for Inter- Office communication thru out GHQ and supporting units. We had nets thru out the Dai Ichi Bldg, 720th MP and CIC Bldg near Tokyo Central Station. Our Company was on the 7th floor of the San Shin Bldg. I remember the dance halls, beer hall(4'O'clock everyday was beer call). Our mess hall was one of the best in the Tokyo area. I remember my burning desire was to make Corproal so I could eat in the NCO Side of the mess Hall. The Ginza shopping, Ernie Pyle Theater a half block away. I remember working one night, sensing someone looking over my shoulder, it was General MacArthur himself a very friendly person, asking me how I was, if I enjoyed my job, etc, etc. I rose thru the ranks to SSG and Ass,t Section Chief. This was by far the best of my assignments during my 21 year Army Career. I left the unit in November 49.

I recently received a Japanese flag from relatives that he had sent home to them while he was there. He had written on the flag. "71st Service Signal Battalion, Tokyo 1946" I would appriciate contact with anyone who might have been there at the time and served with him and any interesting stories that might be connected. I am myself a retired Navy Hospital Corpsman (Medic)
His name was RALPH RICHARD REX although he most likely went by Richard or Dick.

Comments: 59th signal support company was a part of the 71st signal Bataliom. My MOS was 1187 telephone carrier repeater operator and I was stationed at 3 locations in Korea. The first was a site called Tornado, a telephone carrier & radio unit just overlooking the DMZ. The second was called manhattan hill which was a radio relay unit, bouncing radio signals from mountain top to mountain top. This was located 30 miles North of Soul. The third was called Novocain switch, a telephone carrier unit supplying telephone commuinications for the 34th Medical Battalion. This was located near the Chunchun electric dam. 34th went back to the states while I was there and was replaced with the 163rd Medical Batallion. Even our name was changed from Movocain to Norseman switch. Medical Gi's ran our switchboard and I serviced the carrier telephone equipment and helped the medics where I could. We lived in a tent even through 40 degree below zero temperatures but our telephone equipment was located in a quanset building. I served in Korea in 1953 & 1954. Went to Korea in the General SS Walker, an army troop ship and came back on the SSN Anderson, a navy ship. Wonder what Korea looks like today God Bless Korea & those of us who were there.

They went to Korea before I did from our unit in Tokyo.I landed at Kimpo with special commo gear the day Inchon was taken . Several groups of us went TDY from GHQ Tokyo to move around with units of X Corps including some marines.
Landed in Wonsan, went north to Hamhung & vicinity, was evacuated from Hungnam on 12-24 on to USS Mt. Mckinley. Had frostbite of feet. Returned to unit in Tokyo.Have interesting stories, some humorous.
