Comments: My father was with the 71st Signal Battalion in Tokyo Japan in 1946. He passed on in 1966. I recently received a Japanese flag from relatives that he had sent home to them while he was there. He had written on the flag. "71st Service Signal Battalion, Tokyo 1946" I would appriciate contact with anyone who might have been there at the time and served with him and any interesting stories that might be connected. I am myself a retired Navy Hospital Corpsman (Medic)
His name was RALPH RICHARD REX although he most likely went by Richard or Dick.
Thanks

Comments: 59th signal support company was a part of the 71st signal Bataliom. My MOS was 1187 telephone carrier repeater operator and I was stationed at 3 locations in Korea. The first was a site called Tornado, a telephone carrier & radio unit just overlooking the DMZ. The second was called manhattan hill which was a radio relay unit, bouncing radio signals from mountain top to mountain top. This was located 30 miles North of Soul. The third was called Novocain switch, a telephone carrier unit supplying telephone commuinications for the 34th Medical Battalion. This was located near the Chunchun electric dam. 34th went back to the states while I was there and was replaced with the 163rd Medical Batallion. Even our name was changed from Movocain to Norseman switch. Medical Gi's ran our switchboard and I serviced the carrier telephone equipment and helped the medics where I could. We lived in a tent even through 40 degree below zero temperatures but our telephone equipment was located in a quanset building. I served in Korea in 1953 & 1954. Went to Korea in the General SS Walker, an army troop ship and came back on the SSN Anderson, a navy ship. Wonder what Korea looks like today God Bless Korea & those of us who were there.

Comments: Just found this page. Saw my best friend's name in KIA list-Peter Ternes. Another friend from my section, Cpl. Elmer T. Hardy, was killed-they named our barracks after him, Cpl. Elmer T. Hardy Barracks near Tokyo-home of 71st Sig Svc Btn.
They went to Korea before I did from our unit in Tokyo.I landed at Kimpo with special commo gear the day Inchon was taken . Several groups of us went TDY from GHQ Tokyo to move around with units of X Corps including some marines.
Landed in Wonsan, went north to Hamhung & vicinity, was evacuated from Hungnam on 12-24 on to USS Mt. Mckinley. Had frostbite of feet. Returned to unit in Tokyo.Have interesting stories, some humorous.

I am trying to get some information about my father's unit during the
Korean war. He was attached to the 71 st special Signal Battalion
but I can not find that unit designation. If you can steer me in the
right direction, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
