Comments: I received my basic training in Armor at Camp Drum,NY with the 278th Regimental Combat Team (Tennessee Nat'l Guard). I then shipped overseas and arrived at Inch'on,Korea(Tent City)in Aug. '51. I was assigned to'B'Company-6th Tank Batt. and joined them at Hwachon-Chosuji area. For the next five months we then moved around the area known as the'Iron Triangle'(Kumhwa Valley and Kumsong)giving support to elements of ROK and 24th Inf.Div.-21st Regiment troops. We were given notice in Jan.'52 that the whole 24th Inf. Div. was being rotated to Japan and the 40th Div was replacing us at the front. 'B' Comp. was initially stationed at South Camp Fuji(near Fujioka train station). After eight months there-'B'Co. moved to Camp McNair which was located halfway up Mt.Fujiyama. We trained and bivouaced in an area of Japan known as Oh'jojihara. My time to rotate home came in Jan.'53 at which time I left 'B' Company behind in Japan. Some of the more memorable names I remember from my year and a half with 'B' Co. were; Lt.FIDLER,MSGT.GREENE,MSGT.'Whitey'TERRELL,Mess Sgt.PAVELKA,Sgt.CUNNINGHAM,Sgt.PRICE,--also MILLER,BROCK,ANELLI,COLANGELO,HINER,KENNISON and a Korean kid named YONG(who we called Murphy). My tank #35-third platoon-consisted of Tank Commander GARDNER,gunner Jack WEBSTER(WV),Driver BREWER,Loader HALL and Bow Gunner Myself.

Comments: Since I retired from the Navy in 1994 I have been working to document the military service of veterans from my home county in Iowa. I have interviewed and written the service history of over 130 veterans so far. I am currently working with a veteran of the Korean War, Marvin S Hawkins, who served in co. B, 1st platoon of the 6th Tank Battalion from August 1951 until the truce. I like to include some of the history of the unit during the war with these stories, but have been unable to find much history of the 6th TB during the Korean war. Is there a source of this history somewhere?

Comments: Looking for a Tom or Thomas Detloff (Detlove or something like that), that was stationed at Ft. McPherson, GA (outside of Atlanta), in 1954-55. He has a daughter that he knows nothing about. He dated a woman named Louise during this time. He was shipped off to Korea and was never heard from again.
Any info you have on this person would be greatly appreicated.

I was with the 6th tank bn from 1949 till Oct 1951 and I know of no one who got out of D Co. after we were caught in the ambush by the Chinese. I am sorry that I can not remember more but if some one who was in with us at that time will contac me, maybe it will help me remember some of the things that we shared. Comments: My Grandfather (Captain Donald Rutland) was part of the 6th and as a gift for his 80th birthday I have been trying to collect the various patches he wore. I have been unable to find a unit patch for the 6th Medium Tank Battalion from the usual sources and moreover that unit's patch was not shown in a supposedly "complete" military patch guide. As for the details of his service, I only know that his unit may have been the first to encounter the Chinese and that he was a young Captain from Texas. I would hugely appreciate a point in the right direction.

Creech is the one. The unit designation is wrong.
The 6th Tank Bn was on paper attached to the 1st Cav, but fought with
the 24th Infantry Div. The 70th Tank Bn was attached to the 24th
Inf Div, but fought with the 1st Cav Div.
They later got the paper work straightened out. James B. Creech
was the Platoon Sgt for the 3rd Platoon, Company "C", 6th Tank Bn.
He was with the Bn in 1950 when it was with the 2nd Armored Div at
Fort Hood, Texas. When Korea broke out the Bn was alerted and shipped
to, Korea and ended up with the 24th Infantry Division. The Bn also
supported the 1st ROK Infantry Division. Army official records show
the dates the Bn was attached to the 24th as 10 November 1951 to 5
