| T.E. MOORE wrote on September 14, 2011 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: OTHER Comments: An organized and armored Task Force of 23 US Army tanks in a regimental column, made up of M-46 tanks of the 6th.Battalion,"D" Company, and M4A3 tanks from the 70th.Tank Battalion, with men from L/3/5 aboard the tanks on the move. The tanks ran with 50-yard intervals between them. South of Chipyong-ni, the tank column entered a 150-yard long deep road-cut, with steep embankments 30-feet high, and on the right(east) side was Hill-397. There was a sudden flare-up of CCF gun-fire. The CCF hit the tank column with mortars, (American) bazookas, bangalore torpedoes, satchel charges, grenades, and small arms. A bazooka round struck the point tank, hitting the top of the turret, wounding tht tank commander LT.Lawrence L.DeSchweinitz, the gunner CPL.Donald P.Harrell, and the loader PVT.Joseph Galard, but the tank, as well as SFC.James Maxwell's 2nd., and the 3rd. tank all cleared the cut. The 4th.tank had a bazooka round penetrate the armor, and explode the ammunition in the ready racks inside the tank. The tank started to burn. The men in the fighting compartment, CPT.Johnnie M. Hiers(6th.Tank Battalion"D" Company Commander), CPL. John E.Trautman, and PFC.Micheal Lamagna were killed. The tank driver, CPL.John A.Calhoun was severely burned, but heroically kept the tank going, until it cleared the cut, thus leaving a clear path for the remaining tanks in the column, which ran this murderous gauntlet without loss, and moved on to save the garrison at Chipyong-ni.------------------------- Keywords: 6th. Major of the 6th Tank Bn. from November 51 until June 53. We were pulled off line in February of 52 and returned to Japan. Headquarters was at South Camp Fuji, although some of our companies were spread out in Japan to support other units of the 24th. In the fall of '52. we were moved to Camp McNair, on the side of Fuji, where our entire unit assembled. In June of 53, we were ordered to return to Korea. Heavy rains and volcanic ash made our movement down from Fuji to Numazu, where we loaded the Battalion on an LST, a treacherous trip. I was due to rotate back to the ZI, but I had the Personnel Sgt. Major pull my records, and I was in the last vehicle to load on. In late July, the armistice was signed and I headed home. 6TH TANK BN. KOREA 1950-1951 |
| BOB EVANS wrote on September 23, 2003 City and State: RICHLAND MO Unit: CO 'D' 6TH MED TK BN Service or Relationship: - Comments: I was with Sgt Linkletter when he was killed in Korea. Also in the tank was Capt Hines and Lamagna I hope I spelled that right. I am sorry that I can not remember the names of the driver and the bog (assistant driver) who both got out of the tank. I was with the 6th tank bn from 1949 till Oct 1951 and I know of no one who got out of D Co. after we were caught in the ambush by the Chinese. I am sorry that I can not remember more but if some one who was in with us at that time will contac me, maybe it will help me remember some of the things that we shared. I am now 72 years old and a lot of this is forgoten. Keywords: Poor Bob |
