Comments: My name is Felipe Mendez, like my father and uncles, I too served in the military. I retired after 30+ years of service. I am looking for information that can help me find out my father's and uncles unit during their tour of duty with the 65th INF. His name was Jose A. mendez, my uncles Federico, Miguel, reymundo and alejo mendez. They all served together during the Korean war and then Vietnam. I would like to get a link where names of all the "Borinqunos" can be found. thanks for this great website.

I was only 8 years old when he passed away so I never had the privilege to talk to him about his war experience. Was wondering if you might have met him. His name was Jose Angel Cruz, also know as "Gelo", pronounced as "Helo" and he was born in Cidra, PR but was living in the San Juan area (Rio Piedras or Santurce) at the time he was drafted. Unfortunately I have no other information about him, but would like to get his military record if possible.

Comments: Dear Borinqueneers,

It is with great pain in my heart,soul and being that I am notifying you of my father's death. He died on March 19, 2008 waiting for that SOMEONE who knew him,who was there in Korea with him and could testify of his heroism. He was ONLY given the Silver Star because of prejudice and descrimination against Latinos and African-Americans.

ONLY one person recognized my father for his heroism, Brigadier General William W. Harris who wrote in his book, "Puerto Rico's Fighting 65th U.S. Infantry, From San Juan to Chorwan" , page 131, and had the honor to pin the Silver Star on my Dad. My father was even given a Presidental Citation from the President of Korea at the time, Sigmund Rhee, but not even that helped with getting the Congressional Medal of Honor.

ROLL CALL: Gilberto Calderon Luis E. Maldonado-Matos German Oyola Armando Rosa

WHERE ARE YOU?

Please, if you are still alive, I need your help to testify for my father's heroism so he can get that Honor and Medal that he very well earned and DESERVES. Does ANYONE REMEMBER or SAW what my father did to save his squad, disregarding his own safety and only given the SILVER STAR? PLEASE COME FORWARD AND STAND UP FOR YOUR BORINQUENEER BROTHER.

I have written to President Bush, only to pass the paperwork along to someone else. The Army said there was no other proof. We flew to El Paso, Texas twice in hopes of getting to talk to Congressman Reyes,unfortunately he was not there those two times but they only noted our wishes and never did anything to help us, yet he supposed to help our veterans.

I wrote to the Inspector General of the Army and he said the case was "closed". Senator K. Hutchinson was supposed to help us, but "they" wrote back twice with no news. The Congressman of Lewisville, Texas "passed the buck" too. I just don't know who to turn to next.

NOW DO YOU KNOW WHY THEY CALL IT THE FORGOTTEN WAR?

Because NO ONE cares after all these men exposed their lives to fight and keep America Free. My father didn't have to go, yet he chose to quit school and proudly fight for the United States at only 17 years old.

I PROMISED my father on his death bed, that I WOULD GET THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR FOR HIM.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS?

I know that he lost at least one very close friend who died in his arms in combat. (This I learned from my mother years ago.) I love the history channel and see so many stories been told about, Black Americans, Japanees Americans, Jewish Americans and so on. I strongly belive that the history channel do their homework and do a story telling the world about the 65th Infantry Division and the men that fought gallantly and with great honor and pride.

He passed away on 6/27/2006, at the age of 80. While he was in the hospital he kept mentioning the name "Tony." Does anyone out there, who served in Korea with M Co. know my father, or "Tony"? Comments: I need information of anyone who knew my father in law Marcelo Torres Rivera, he was a Borinqueneer Co. H 65th Infantry served in WWII 1941-44 as Gunner Mortar, Rome Arno, Rhinoland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the American, European African Middle Eastern Theaters. He also served in Korea(Summer/Fall)1950-(Fall/Winter)1951 in Field Artillery, was wounded by a Grenade blast and was warded the Purple Heart. He died in 1998, any one who knew him, have pictures of him, any story or memoir of him, please contact me. My wife have the medals from WWII, but don't have any medals from Korea, not even the Purple Heart. My wife wants his Purple Heart medal and any other condecorattions he might have received in Korea, so my son keep his grandfather's legacy. Any help is deeply appreciated.

Comments: I served in Korea under combat conditions,1953-1954. I was in a hurry to get to Korea for revenge for my brother who was killed Nov. 4,l950 at the Chosin Reservoir as a marine after the Chinese crossed the Yalu River.The 65th Regt. was previously a Puerto Rican regt.,but was dismantled when they were accused of bugging out. I found out from some of the remaining Puerto Ricans that remained with us were out of ammunition and were expected to defend with their bayonets. I know they were telling the truth,because we faced the same situation.To me they were heroes.We could have easily won that so-called Police-action if they would have let us do our job and not worry about the Russians and Chinese.

Comments: Hello: My name is odette Olmeda. My father Herminio Olmeda-Hernandez, and a Korean War Veteran, passed away on December 25th, 2004. We were in the process of getting is memories together, but a sudden and very short hospital stay cut it short. Three years ago I had asked him to record his memories of Korea and his service as a an infantryman with the Puerto Rico 65th Infantry Division. He assured me that he had started recording his memories, but we have not been able to find them. It was my intent to honor my father (while he was still alive) by writing about his life, his humble beginnings as a sugarcane cropper in Puerto Rico in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and how after serving in Korea he returned to the Island and became a teacher and raised the family of which I am very proud of being a member. Right now I am going through a very hard time with the loss of my father. Now, it is more important for me to make sure his life is honored. To that effect, I would like to get in touch with anyone who knew him and may have served with him to share any memories they may have about my father. You may contact me at (860)568-3847 (ET) Thank you. Odette Olmeda

Gen Edward Almond vs. 65th Inf Regt

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Luis Asencio-Camacho wrote on 2004-10-22 15:18:28.0

Comments: I am truly looking forward to meeting or exchanging impressions with living relatives, friends, or acquaintances of the late Lt Gen Edward (Ned) Almond. During the research leading to my manuscript for a roman-a-clef novel on the Puerto Rican 65th U.S. Inf Regt in the Korean War, I have come across countless references to Gen Almond. Whilst individual points of view vary in portraying Almond as "a brilliant strategist" or as a deplorable "militarily unintelligent" leader, all seem to agree on the Almond's wretched personality -- bigotry being his greatest flaw. Inasmuch Gen Almond notably displayed this kind of attitude toward black units, I am interested on his view of Puerto Rican soldiers, whom he viewed as no more reliable than his own 92d Inf Div (Negro) from WWII. The late Brig Gen William Harris, commanding officer of the 65th (1949-51), was very polite when addressing the issue of racism in the Army of the day, rather providing the abstracts. I am sure the growing reputation of the 65th during the war would not have gone unnoticed to Gen Almond before he retired in 1952(?). I know that in his retirement years, Gen Almond became a prominent civics activist, giving me the impression of having "redeemed" himself from his wretched reputation as a person. Your input will be appreciated.

Information on my uncle Manuel Gonzalez Bernal

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Iris Perry wrote on 2004-09-29 20:42:15.0

Comments: My uncle PFC Manuel Gonzalez Bernard (s/b Bernal) went MIA on 9/18/52 and presumed dead 12/31/53 during the Korean War conflict. He served in B Company, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He was originally from Adjuntas, PR and was 23 years old in 1952. To this day, our family doesn't really know and probably will never know what happened to him. We would like to bring closure to this very terrible loss but the North Koreans will not allow the US to search for the remains of our loved ones in the DMZ, which is where Outpost Kelly was located and probably where my uncle was killed or captured. There are no witnesses and he doesn't appear on the Johnnie Johnson List or in the Missing in Action, Captivity report compiled from returning POWs.

I was just wondering if there's anyone that served with him that could possible shed some light?

I'm in the process of obtaining some military records from the Army.

I have a picture of my uncle with 3 other unidentified soldiers taken in Korea. I would love to find out who they are. Please email me if you have any information that will help me.

Thank you!

I would like to hear from anyone that knew him. Also, I think it is great that someone is going to write a book about the 65Th. Maybe then people will realize the sacrifices that Puerto Ricans have made for the United States and still making. At times when I was growing up I wonder why dose Papi goes into a shell and would not talk about his time in Korea, well after spending 3 years in Vietnam with the Herd (173rd Airborne Brigade), now I know why. My father is no longer with us, but I will always remember him and now more that ever, because we have share similar experience.

Comments: I would like to find out if there is a place were we could find info about the 65th de Infanteria personnel that served in Korea. As I understand, my father, Don Valentin Rodriguez Ortiz de Yauco, PR, served during that time. He is about to turn 80 in May 2004, he also is showing signs of altesimers(?) disease. I would like to have some data to share with him about his days in the service. I was born a year after he returned from the ROK. ¡Gracias por cualqier información que me puedan enviar!

Marimer Navarrete wrote on 2003-09-29 17:52:26.0

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Newspaper: Fort Dix Post http://www.dix.army.mil/PAO/post03/post072503/postonline.htm Date: 25 July, 2003 Records reveal life of service, valor -------------------------------------------------- Spc. Finnbar McCallion 444th MPAD/ Fort Dix PAO -------------------------------------------------- The only evidence of your father’s time in service is a Combat Infantryman’s badge, but just imagine finding out he had also earned a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and an additional fifteen awards unbeknownst to you or your entire family. Such was the case for the Cousins family after requesting his military records.
Master Sgt. Norman M. Cousins was in World War II and the Korean War but no one was really aware of what that entailed until Kevin L. Cousins, his son, went through the motions of finding out.
“Believe it or not - there are a lot of veterans entitled to awards who are not even aware of it,” said Lewis Wright Jr., a veterans advocate service officer in the nationally accredited Northeast Chapter of the 24th Infantry Regiment Combat Team Association Inc. in Willingboro.
You too may be entitled to awards you’re not even aware of. How does it happen? Sometimes a service member is discharged before the paperwork accompanying an award is finished or filed. Other times, service members do not realize they’ve been awarded, and never inquire especially after the post-traumatic stress of combat. But, if you’re looking for retirement points and want to double check, or you want to be accurate for yourself or a family member, there are ways to do it.
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the formal depository for records of military personnel who were discharged from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard. If you are a veteran or the next-of-kin to one, you are entitled to order copies of military records by filling out a Standard Form 180. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) subsidiary of NARA is where all official requests for records should be directed.
Regular means of obtaining records were not an option for the retired Master Sgt. who wasn’t able to gather his records himself. Norman M. Cousins has one more battle to fight; he has Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, with the National Privacy Act requiring his signature, his son was lucky enough to have his participation in the fight. With the help of Wright, who realized the importance of Cousins’ particular situation, he was able to submit a petition request to Congressman Jim Saxton.
“It’s very important for the family to realize what he’s been through,” said Kevin L. Cousins, the senior pastor at the Beacon of Hope Church in Browns Mills. “When I discovered how many awards he had really earned it gave me a better understanding of what he’d been through,” said Cousins, who noted his father only spoke of his service once to him for an hour and his father found that very difficult. “These men fought for the freedoms that we have today. Their experiences are important; and much of the history that they have experienced is going with them (in death) — and is gone now.”
“There are avenues that you can pursue — it’s very, very difficult (doing it yourself),” said Wright, who has been through the process before with his own father’s records and the veterans he helps everyday.
No matter the means you use to recover your records — consulting a veterans officer or doing it yourself — diligence and patience are required.
According to the NARA Web site, the turnaround time for a request of records vary depending on the request. Currently they receive 5, 000 request a day and are backlogged to 150,000 requests already. On average most request take 4 to 6 weeks. If you have not received a response send an email to orderstatus@nara.gov or call Customer Service Center at 1-(800)- 234-8861.
Regardless of the wait, you might agree with the Cousins and find it worth it. “It’s closure for me and my family; it should inspire other veterans,” he said.
And you might find the rifle of your fathers combat Infantryman Badge aiming you in the direction of a life of service and honor like this:
The Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with one Bronze Service Star, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp and Japan clasp, the National Defense Service Medal with one Silver Service Star, the Korean Service Medal with one Silver Service Star, the Combat Infantryman badge, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the United Nations Service Medal, the Honorable Service Lapel Button for WWII, the Expert Badge with Carbine Bar, the Sharpshooter Badge with Machine Gun Bar and with Rifle Bar and the Army Retired Lapel Button.
To obtain a Standard Form 180, there are several options according to the Web site:
Download electronically from the NARA Web site (in .PDF format);
Order the form through the NARA Web site;
Write to the National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63132;
Use NARA’s Fax-on-Demand System;
Call the Fax-on-Demand System at (301) 837-0990 from a fax machine (using the handset). Follow the voice instructions, and request document number 2255.
I am looking for military nomenclature of the uniform and gear used.
Like Shirt, Trousers, Field Jacket, Low Bearing Equipment, Etc...
Please post or email, I will be buying everything I need from different internet vendors.
If you know were I can get most of the items please post that too. This may benefit many Boricuas.
My father was not liked by his father but I was never told. Something about my last name "Estela" had to do with my Grandfather not passing his last name to my father. Comments: Greetings to the old soldiers and their families. As usual, I find this site by accident, since I had lost hope of finding info on the 65th. It's a shame that this medium was not available before 1988. That was the year my father, Angel M. Machado-Escalera, of Camuy, Puerto Rico, passed away. He was only 62. Too young to have left us. The story is all too familiar: A veteran soldier (1944-1964) who talked little of what he had seen. A lot of us children of the Borinqueneers are now fathers and grandfathers. We served also in the service, or protecting others as cops or firefighters. We all risk our lives one way or another, just to pass on into the quiet darkness of the forgotten. Don't forget. And ask questions. And you viejos: Tell the story. Tell the story now, before it is too late and you leave us wondering what really happened in your life. It is painful, and horrible. War always is. But you have to tell the story, or you will leave a lot of us spending the rest of our lives looking for information about you. Like me. Dad was a memeber of the group that received the Presidential Unit Citation. I just don't know why, because we lost a lot of things during ensuing years. I can't even get a service history. At least I have his DD214. My respect, my love, and my honor to all of you.
Comments: Hello,
My father served with the 65th Infantry Regiment in M Company from 1951-1953 as a Corporal. His name is Ramiro Rivera Martinez, he is still alive (73) and well. He was one the few that knew english fairly well and after 6 months as a machine gun infantryman, served as an interpreter between the officials and other members of the company. He doesn't talk much about the war and after these many years doesn't remember a lot of names from the top of his head, but if anybody remembers him please send me an e-mail to the address provided here and I will make sure he gets it. I would really like to know if the other soldiers that served with him on the 3-men machine gun team are still alive and remember him.
Best Regards and God Bless. Thank you for everything you did for us. We are extremely proud!!
Comments: I am the son of retired LTC Tomas H. Guffain, then company commander of F Co, 2nd Bn, 65th Inf, 1950-51. I am looking for verification of information obtained through the www.borinqueneers.com website. On March 31 or April 1, 1951, Company F was given the task of taking Hill 398 near Sogyonchon, Korea. They successfully took that hill. That day my father received the Silver Star for his actions in taking that hill. To my surprise, according to borinqueneer.com, 5 other members of Company F received the Silver Star for that action on that day. Also, 8 other members of Company F received the Bronze Star that day. If this information is true 14 members of Company F distinguished themselves for bravery and gallantry that day taking Hill 398. If this is true, this is a story that needs to be told in detail, for this a truly a day of heroism for the brave Borinqueneers, bringing glory not only to their company but for their Regiment as well. Why have we not heard more about Hill 398 if so many distinguished themselves that day?
According to borinqueneer.com the following from Company F received the Silver Star in action on Hill 398, March 31-April 1,1951:
Capt Tomas H. Guffain 1st LT Smith B. Chamberlain Master Sgt Pedro Rodriguez Sgt Ismael Jimenez Hernandez (KIA) Private 1st Class Tomas Rosa Claudio Private 1st Class Juan H. Santiago
Those receiving the Bronze Star from Company F for action on March 31, 1951:
Sgt 1st Class Luis A Benitez Sgt 1st Class Alfredo Malave Sgt Ralph A Chinea Cpl Pascual Melendez Cpl Julio Hernandez Torres Pfc Jose Morales Roman Pfc Gregorio Pagan Roque Pvt Manuel Reyes Escobar
Here are the heroes of March 31 and April 1,1951. I am looking to verify the accuracy of this information. Were there 6 documented acts of gallantry under fire that day garnering Silver Stars won by Company F taking Hill 398? Were there 8 documented acts of bravery under fire that day garnering Bronze Stars won by Company F taking Hill 398? If so, I would like as much information as possible so this story can be told.
By the way, my dad is still living in Orlando, Florida. He is 85 years old and very proud of his service with the 65th Infantry during World War II and Korea, and of the men who served with him in the glory years of 1950-51.
I have gathered enough info on the regiment's participation in the war; but little I know about the years between WWII and Korea. I'm looking specifically for company distribution (I understand some units were stationed at Fort Brooke, Camp Losey, and Henry Barracks); how was a typical day of work; training exercises and sites; what did a new recruit experience when joining the regiment. Were there recruiting stations spread about the island, or would-be soldiers had to travel to San Juan in order to get recruited? Was there only the USS Marine Lynx or were there really more than one ship transporting the Borinqueneers to Korea? This and/or any additional info would be greatly appreciated. May reply in Spanish or English.
There is no truth to Mr. Cruz remarks. At no time in the report or the newspapers articles on the 65th was there any mention of the "65th being used as "cannon fodder" while the rest of the 3rd Division let Puerto Rican-Americans take casualties, etc.
It appears Mr. Cruz thinks a report by the Army's Center of Military History, which is the foundation for the newspapers articles, was written by a pseudo-historian. I hardly think so. The Center is a highly respected government agency.
Anyone interested in reading the report, including Mr Cruz, can access the report on www.prari.org
He taught me a Japanese army song that he learned from the Japanese during WW2 when they occupied Guam. Cookie taught me to play the National anthem of Puerto Rico onthe guitar. and finally my company comander Lt Cavasos I shall never forget him. Does anyone remember me? I'm the guy that played the guitar and got a little telescope for my 22nd birthday in June, and spotted a Chinese observer in a cave across that valley we were overlooking. I"m sorry I got carried away.
Paul Perez wrote on 2001-01-15 01:57:06.0
Comments: My father, Hector Perez-Vega, Maj AUS Ret, served with the 65th during both WWII and Korea. At the start of the Korean war he was a sergeant, but shortly thereafter he received a battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant. He finished the war as a Captain.
He passed away in 1988, and I am trying to gather anecdotes, unit histories, etc to piece together his military record.
Any help would be most appreciated.
