Comments: Hi. My name is Francisco Maldonado, the same as my grandfather, who fought with the 65th in WWII and Korea. I am currently a student majoring in history at Yale University and I want to do my senior thesis on the 65th infantry. What piqued my interest in this was an article I recall reading in the San Juan Star a year or two ago about some sort of court martial or disciplinary action against certain soldiers in the 65th. If anyone has a copy of this article (or the date and issue in which it was published), any information about this incident, or any ideas for a paper on the 65th, your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Cordially, Francisco J. Maldonado

Comments: I am writing on behalf of my father,Albert Young, who served in the Korean War January 1954 to December 1954. He was recently told by David Petree at the National Personnel Record Center, that they have no record of the 65th Infantry Regiment Heavy Tank 3rd Division. They stated that alot of records were destroyed by a fire, and they didn't even have record of my father serving in Korea. I am grieved, because my father was wounded in action, and should have received a purple heart. My father has many pictures of Korea, standing with his buddies in uniform, but they have stated that this isn't proof enough. Could anybody give me some kind of advice on how this issue could be resolved? My father deserves better treatment than this for the sacrifice he gave for this country. I know there are many of you, who are or have been in this position. How did you resolve this? Your response is very much appreciated. God bless you all!!!

Comments: My father was told recently by David Petree at the National Personnel Record Center in St Louis Missouri, that they have no record of the 65th Infantry Regiment Heavy Tank 3rd Division, that served during the Korean War. Alot of records were destroyed in a fire, and they have no record of my father serving. I am grieved, because my father was wounded in the war. He should have received a Purple Heart. He also should have received health benefits, but without any "proof" he has received nothing. My father's serial number was US53170104. He has all kinds of pictures being in Korea, but the officials won't acknowledge these things as proof. Could somebody give me some advice on what to do? Where could I get some concrete proof? My father never talked much about the Korean war, but now he is starting to open up. I want to see my father receive the honor that is due him. I'm sure there are many more in the same position. I thank you so much for the sacrifice you gave so that I could be where I am today. God bless you all... veterans everywhere. I am truly grateful.

He has spoken to one of his former buddies but continues to look for more men who served with him. He remembers David A Waller from IA. and Wesley L. Hendricks from NJ. My dad is Joseph J. My fathers birthday is soon and I would love to present him with memories and voices from his days serving this wonderful country. Also my dad tells me that his mess hall received the food service citation for almost 1 whole year. He was awarded his SGT. Stripes by a two star General while in Korea.

His ROTC class has a reunion every year and, through him, I have met many of the other "lieutenants" who served at that time. I am interested in information on the service of the members of his class, or those who served in the Puerto Rican 65th Infantry.

Bolivar Almenas wrote on 2000-05-15 11:09:44.0
Comments: I am a viet nam veteran, and while stationed in the states I did some reseacrh on the Korea war. I have a cousin who died in that war, and some of the older fellows from the old neighborhood of wales ave in the Bronx. The 65th infantry was the Pride of Puerto Rico.
The predominantly Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment was honored in a 1992 Army National Guard heritage painting for its record of valor during the Korean War. The scene depicts the regimental bayonet charge against a Chinese division near Seoul, South Korea,on Feb. 2, 1951. The 65th had been ordered to seize two hills and climaxed a three-day assault by fixing bayonets and launching straight into the Chinese 149th Division. The enemy soldiers fled.
The 65th was organized in 1899, a year after the United States seized Puerto Rico from Spain. At the time, the Army considered the regiment to be "colonial troops"for the defense of the island, according to the Army Center for Military History in Washington D.C.. Its nickname,"The Borinqueneers," honors a native Puerto Rican Taino Indian tribe who called the Island Boriquen. The regiment served in Panama and France during World War II, but its record was undistinguished because, some sources say, Army commanders lacked confidence in the Puerto Ricans' willingness to fight, which smack right into some sense of superiority in the psychic of those commanders.
It took the Korean War to prove the fallacy of that analogy were. After arriving at Pusan, South Korea, on Sept. 20, 1950, the outfit quickly won respect on the battlefield. Over the next three years, it participated in nine major campaigns and earning a Presidential Unit Citation, a Meritorious Unit Commendation and two Republic of Korea Unit Citations. Individual members earned four Distinguished Service Crosses and 124 Silver Stars. It should be noted that after the silver star come's the medal of honor, and I will venture to say that many of those silver stars should have been medals of honor. The ground war in Korea was fought on some of the most mountainous terrain in the world and many of the bitterest battles occurred during the winter, when extreme cold, snow and ice dogged troops. The 65th's regimental motto,"Honor and Fidelity," exemplifies its gallant service in that difficult war. It should be further noted that percentage wise more Americans Puerto Ricans fought in Korea than the continental Americans.
General McArthur was interview once concerning the 65th and he stated that if he he to do battle, he who prefer to be leading the 65th.

Comments: I am the son of a Korean War Veteran. His name is Ruben Fontanez Torres. He served from 1951 to 1952. His description of the war was,"Not like Viet Nam. Korean war was always boom boom boom boom, sabre jets bombarding Chinese positions while at the same time we saw Soviet Migs in dog fights with them. We respected Chinese artillery. He always mention fire forty fet as the name of this type of artillery". He told me when I was a kid that sometimes he went with 300 soldiers and only 23 returned. "God was protecting me. There is no other explanation. We could do patrols or advance through below zero temperature without food for weeks. Food supplies were sent but fell on enemy territory most of the time. Because of the tension i never thought on food". Then he taught my brother and myself how to run when under artillery fire,"Never run in a straight line, run in zig zag. You have more chances to survive this way. One day he told me that a certain Reyes came running towards him crying,'estoy herido'(I'm wounded). He had to stop to cure him. On another ocassion he saved his comrade as a captured Chinese soldier tried to attack them with his bayonet. He used his M-1 rifle as a stick to block the attack and disarm the enemy. It was easy,he said" He told me he and another soldier went on difficult missions to gun down snipers and that General Van Fleet congratulated them. He was given two medals for bravery. Today he reacts with thunder,"He thinks he is still under artillery fire. It is unfair that these brave soldiers have been forgotten and not compensated appropriately as they deserved. Today he feels bitter of the way he and his comrades are treated by the V.A. in P.R. He got sick while in service but the evidence was witheld by the Appeals Board. He deserves service connected pension. He will pass away with this sadness and I would like to know how to help my dad get a fair play by these people in the V.A. If you recognize his name please leave a message. I will let him know it. Thanks.

My dad would love to hear from anyone who served with him Sorry I do not know the exact years he was in. My father often spoke of his days serving our country when I was a child. His stories never scared me so I think he probably tempered them. My dad is suffering physical limitations and would be greatly lifted if he heard from any buddies he served with. He was in the 65th inf. 3rd division L company. He spoke of being in a fox hole with a Jimmy Williams celebrating his 18th birthday in the pouring rain. My dad was born 6/25/32 so perhaps it was 1950 that he was in Korea. Please anyone with fond memories of this mess hall Sgt. Email me at spb4889@gateway.net until 3/11/00. I will post our new Email when this arrives. God Bless all you heroic men and may you enjoy your retirement years with terrific health, love, family and friends. Dads Daughter.

Comments: I Personally know Rafael Pacheco. He served in the Korean War with the 65th Infantry Regiment. His daughter is married to my twin brother MSG Miguel A. Hernandez. Rafael is a lawyer today resident of Bayamon PR. He has very interesting stories about what he experienced in combat duty in the Korean War. You can contact my brother in 787-774-0903 or his office in Ft. Buchanan, PR 787-707-2588. He can lead you to talk to Rafael Pacheco. I hope you are sucessful in gathering the information needed to set the history right about their contribution during the Korean War. Good Luck!

Comments: I am doing my father's family history. I would like to know if any one remembers Roger Fiddermon. He was from Virginia. He was wounded on 10 Jun 53 about six months after I was born. My father passed away this past June 1999 and as a gift to his only living sibling, I would like to have some stories to add to his section of this history. My aunt is the last of the line and she is 80 years old. If anyone know anything, please respond. Thank you.

Comments: I would like to know if anyone out there remembers my father. His name was Luis Ruiz Baez and he served in Korea until June 4,1951, when he was wounded in battle. He was then sent to a hospital in San Francisco until he was discharged in March, 1952. He grew up in Trastalleres, Santurce, Puerto Rico and the used to call him "Guicho". When he returned after the war, they nicknamed him "El Héroe de Panmunjom".
He passed away in 1993 and I would like to find anyone out there who could share any memories of him. Thanks.

Comments: The US Army will formally commemorate the veterans of the 65th Infantry Regiment. Planning has begun on the ceremony and I am part of the planning committee. Once all the details are worked out I will make a new posting to this messageboard and a formal invitation will be provided to the regimental veterans. I request all veterans write or email me and provide their current address.

Comments: Although the majority of soldiers in the 65th Inf. Regt were Puerto Rican, there were names like Cavazos,(Mexican-American), Schaefer, Olson, Mitchell, Watkins, Williams, Scarpato, etc. From all areas of the U.S. Cpl. Charles E. Criss, E Company, from Preston, West Virginia, was killed in action on 7/21/53, just before the truce was signed. I served in Korea in Easy Company of the 65th Infantry Regt, from 3/53 to 9/53 and participated in patrols and battles in the Kuhmwa - Chorwan Valleys, and on 6/14/53 was in a raid on hill 412 to block a Chinese offensive. The last major fight E Company was in was the Kumsong Bulge. Is anyone aware of any unit citations given to any units of the 65th ?

I've spent a total of five (5) years active duty with U.S Forces, Korea (2 ID:'76-77/8th U.S Army:'94-98). I took part in "Operation Paul Bunyon (Aug'76)". I have two cousin's (F Marty, A Acevedo) and one uncle (I. Alvarado Cruz) who were all members of the 65th In Reg, 3d ID. All received Combat Infantryman Badge's. All made it back safely. This is a family heritage that has left me damn proud. I do have one other cousin who served with 5th Marines (T. Colon) who returned with post tramatic stress, he and his family still suffer from it today- Semper Fi.
