I have many photos he took including the Communist and Un delegations to the truce talks. There are many photos of the guys in the company as well.

If there is a way to post them for all who were there, I'd like to share them

Comments: Mr. Kirkendoll,
I'm not sure if you ever check this site anymore, but if you do, my name is Becky Hamilton. Basil Lee Hamilton was my grandfather. It was an honor to me that you mentioned him in your comments. I never had the pleasure of knowing him myself, but it is nice to know that he was a good friend. Your message on this board means a lot to me. Thank you!

Comments: After graduation from Mapmaking School at Fort Belvoir in May of 51, I was the first replacement sent to the 62nd in Taegue, where I was welcomed with open arms. I was later joined by two other classmates from Belvoir, David Harrod and Don Barry. We had a small black and white darkroom with a 35mm enlarger and a 10x10 contact printer for aerial films to which I was first assigned. It was more of a convenience to the amateur photographers than it was government business. It was here that I first encountered the Marlyn copy film, produced on the Litho Camera, and printed on the contact printer. I don't remember how many prints I made, but in those days before pornography was widespread, they were quite popular.
We were attached to 8th Army Headquarters, and our Officers' Club and Enlisted Mens' Club were extremely popular with neighboring units including the Air Force and an outfit from India, because we had the only hard liquour, and an endless supply of beer in the area. We had to pick up our litho supplies in Pusan and 8th Army Hq. was told that we needed two trucks to make the trip because the mapstock was so heavy that the rough Korean roads would fracture the springs on the "6bys".
Inadvertdentaly one truck would come come back mysteriously loaded with booze which was readily available at a Pusan distributor named Patterson, while the other truck just as mysteriously came back with its springs intact.
At times I think that the 62nd could have inspired the TV serie "MASH". We did an excellent job of performing our assigned duties, but we didn't let the army make us play "soldier" all the time.
When I arrived in Taegue the personnel were half Regular Army out of Fort Bragg, and half Enlisted Reservists who had served less than 24 months in World War2, most of whom were bitter for having been called back to service. As men were rotated others were immediately promoted in their places and I soon made Sergeant because of my photographic ability, rather than my soldiering.
The company's primary duty at the time was the redafting of 1 to 50,000 scale Japanese WW2 maps to 1 to 25,000 scale US Standards and when quetioned why they just couldn't be doubled in size photographically the explanation was that the roads would appear too thick at that size! We also did a lot of job printing for 8th Army Hq. and my family members cringe when for years I have told people that I received my battle stars for "Copying Marilyn Monroe Calendar Pictures for the Officers and printing the Chaplain's Bulletin every Thursday".
I'm sorry that I didn't see 2003 query about the calendar photos sooner, but I only got network coverage recently.

Comments: I am wondering if any veterans remember making copies of Marilyn Monroe's nude calendar as something to give out in return for favors while in Korea. I have some info to that effect, but it says it designates the source of the info as "a colonel in the 162nd Engineers Topographical Company." I cannot find any evidence of a 162nd, just your 62nd. I'm wondering if perhaps that leading "1" is a typo. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

Comments: I was a member of the 62d Engineer Topographic Company attached to 8th army HQ in Oct of 1950.

In Dec. of 1950 we were chased out of Seoul and returned to Pusan where we were commissioned to create a terrain model of the area around Pusan for the commanding general responsible for the defense of Pusan in the event the Chinese got that far south.

We worked on that model (made of hardboard and plaster-of-paris) for about three weeks from about Jan 1st 1951. The model was taken to the commanding general of the Pusan perimeter.

I have two questions for which I am requesting your help:
1. Who was that commanding general ?
2. Whatever could have happened to that model ?
