Looking for men who served with Joseph Cieslak

Comments: I am looking for men who served in Korea with my uncle, Joseph "Joey" Cieslak, in 1954-55. Joey was killed in a plane crash in Seattle in November 1955, while coming home for Thanksgiving leave. (I was not born until 1971.) I have all of his personal effects, including his photo album from Korea. I would love to talk to the men he served with; you might be in some of these pictures.

Remember My Father?

Comments: Looking for men who served with my Dad, Fred DeVore Jr. I believe he was with the 623rd. in Korea from July 52 thru July 53. I believe he was tasked with some FO duties toward the end of his tour. Dad didn't talk much about his service and passed away in 1971. I think I have access to numerous pictures, maps, etc. from that time if you served with him. Thank you.

623d FA Reunion 6/23/2007 - Glasgow, KY

Comments: Attention all current and former REDLEGS and family members: The 1st Battalion 623d Field Artillery will hold a Artillerymens Reunion at the Glasgow National Guard Armory on the 23rd Day of June, 2007.

The Barbeque will begin at 4:00 pm at the armory. In addition, to the barbeque we are making arrangements for a golf outing early that morning. If you are interested in playing golf, the point of contact is Sergeant First Class Chad Jones (502 607 2318).

The battalion is comprised of units from: Glasgow (Headquarters Battery); Tompkinsville (Alpha Battery); Campbellsville (Bravo Battery), Monticello (Charlie Battery) and Springfield (Formerly Service Battery).

Comments: We were married 5-5-1951 on Smoke Bomb Hill with Ed Knapstein and Joe Cardinale as attendants. Friend Roy Wright also of Eau Claire passed away this past year. In mid eighties attended reunion in Monticello, KYApproximately fifty percent of members attended.

Comments: Was searching the internet on any info on my father, Joseph E. Hurst. He was in the KY national Guard 623rd FA Battalion C from Monticello KY. If anyone know him or had stories I would love to hear them. He passed away on February 1st 1997 of Heart Failure. Korean Veteran

Comments: Activated through the 623rd out of Glasgow, Ky and was stationed in North Carolina for basic training. I shipped out to Korea after basic as a casuality replacment and was placed in A Battery of the 90th fielf artillery as Chief of Computer section. Worked as forward observer for a time and ended my career as Security Sergent before being discharged in October 1952.

Searching for Former Members

Comments: Served as Personnel Management Spec in Personnel Section of Headquarters Battery from 21 Aug 52 to 6 June 53. Ranks Cpl(E4) to SFC (E6). Worked with Sgt Ramond Hurley and SFC David Baublitz. We provided artillery support for 1st Marine Division in the Munsan-ne area for the attacks on Reno and Vegas Hills, receiving the Naval Presidentual Citation. Then transferred to the Punch Bowl where we supported the 7th Inf Div. I left this area in June 1953. I was the first Regular Army replacement in the 623rd which was a Kentucky National Guard organization. I believe Headquarters Battery was from Glascow, KY. Hope there still some 623rd Vets out there to contact me. Having been in Personnel I may know some of the people. After all, I was the Battalion Personnel Sgt.

Looking for guys who know my Dad.

Comments: My Dads name is William R. Campbell and went by Bill or possibly Billy. Dad served in Korea between 51 and 53. Was wounded in 1953 during enemy shelling. At the time of his being awarded the Purple Heart, he was with the 623 FA Battery B. He was awarded this medal by Maj. B. L. Licklider Bn. Exec. Officer 623 FA Battallion. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who remembers Dad so I could pass on info to him. Thanks.

Comments: I was a Korean civilian in A Battery, commanded by Captain Pace. In the summer of 1952, ROK 7th Division initiated an offensive operation, and I vlunteered to go with the forward observer team attached to a ROK Battalion. We marched all day and, in late afternoon, we forded a river. The Chinese Force gave us a substantial mortar barage and everybody hopped through the river like rabbits, and climbed into a hill. I had an attack of leg cramp and had no choice but to stay in the water, being left behind. After the barage, I hobbled out of the water, and tried to scale the hill on on leg. A young forwaard observer, a young RA Lieutenant, put me on his back and carried me piggy-back up the hill. ROKs were very impressed by the compassionate act. Some serenaded us by singing "My Old Kentucky Home."

Time has gone by and I am getting old, and I do not even remember his name. I think the name of the radio operator was "Wilson." I never thanked him, and it has been bugging me.

Wherever he may be today, I would like to say "thank you" to him. Without him, I could have been left behind somewhere in that valley They cancelled the operation next day, and we came back in one piece.

Recognition Program

Comments: Looking for Korean War Veterans of the 623rd Field Artillery. The Kentucky Military History Museum is currently developing an exhibit to open on 27 June 2003, honoring membewrs of this organization. What happened to 623rd FAB in '52/'53

Comments: I was with X Corp, later x'fered to I Corp, where we were released in July of '53. We supported the 1st Marine Division for seven months. Looking for anyone that might know the history of this outfit in their last two years, as the 623rd was deactivated and sent home.

CW4 James Leon Strange

Comments: He left behind a very proud family of 4 sons, (one of which is currently now performing his old duties and sits at his old desd at the 623rd HQ in Glasgow) 2 daughters, and his wife, Sara.

Keywords: 623rd service battery based in Springfield Ky. Dad went in as a private and left high school early. in less than a week after returning home, he decided that the military life wasn't that bad. He reenlisted and served with the 623rd for 40 year, shortly at Springfield then transford to HQ in Glasgow, KY. After making the rank of CW4, He retired in 1996 I believe, and died in August of 2000 of cancer.

Comments: I am searching for information of behalf of my father. His name was Alfred Elmer Anderson. He was a seargent first class with the 623 FA BN. He and I had planned to do this for a mumber of years. Unfortunately he was struck down with cancer in November and passed away in February. I would like to hear from anyone who knew him in Korea.
