Comments: My father, Robert D. Smith (probably went by Donald), was a medic attached to the 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Cavalry Regiment, King Company.
He was severely wounded on October 7, 1951 by mortar fire while the unit was trying to take a rail head near Chiam-Ni,in an area called the iron triangle. Before leaving Korea for Japan he was told by his sergeant (he can't remember his name) that he was being recommended for the Bronze Star and saw the paperwork for it but never received it nor heard any more about it.
I would appreciate any and all help you could provide either in finding out if in fact he should have received it or in pointing me in the right direction.
My father is doing well and would like to hear from anyone he served with. You can reach him through my e-mail address.
My sincere thanks. Eric Smith dezertdude@verizon.net

Purple Heart |

 |
Lance Burris wrote on 2007-09-20 15:06:53.0
Comments: Like Steve Lasko, I too am in pursuit of getting my father his Purple Heart he earned during the Korean War. He was stationed with the 1st Cav vic, 5th Regt, E Co. when he was wounded and sent home to the hospital in San Francisco. I was just a child in 6th grade, but remember it well. While I went to school in SF, he was in and out of the hospital for a year. I have tried in vain with the Army Review Board and turned down twice because of lack of what they call "evidence." Most of his records were destroyed in the records fire in St Louis. But I did have two documents from the War Department telling about his injuries and that my mother had been notified he was being sent to SF. I am now in search of those who may have known my father (Sgt. Avis William Burris) and about his injury and who would be willing to write a letter to that fact that I can present to the Army Review Board. Nothing would serve me with greater honor than place the Purple Heart on his grave. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Lance M. Burris (vet)
To Steve: You can contact a MSG Richard R. Gallmeyer at msg1gal@aol.com who may be able to help you. He has supplied me with names of some who did serve in his company during 1950-51 who, hopefully, remember my father.

In the article it mentioned a book that was published and sent to the families of the soldiers. It is an official pictorial history of the 1st Cavalry Division's recent combat history. My Dad was Cpl. Lester C. Davis and 19 at the time--he was a tank driver with Company M of the division's 5th Cavallry Regiment. The time frame of the pic was after Sept. 1951 Is there anyone out there that would be able to help me find out where I could find this book if it still exists? It would mean alot to my family and I....thanks so much ...

Comments: I am the son of deceased Army Sgt. Avis William Burris. He served in Korea around 1950-1951. I am at odds with the Army Review Board who recently denied my petition for his award of the purple heart for injuries incurred in the Korean War. My mom and I were in Camp Stoneman, CA when he shipped out to Korea and then moved to San Francisco when he was wounded in Korea by a gernade. With limited service files I send the evidence I had to the Review Board which denied the petition for the purple heart. I know about the injury, I was there when he returned to the hospital. But the evidence I could produce was not enough for the board. Now, I am searching for someone who may have known him, know of his injuries and who would be willing to send a document as to their knowledge. I only have a year to submit new evidence. Please contact me if you have information. I am also a veteran with service in Korea in 1958-59. Thanks.

There is a memorial being built in the town that I live in and on July 4th of this year there will be a dedication. He doesn't know about it yet and I have also found out about another medal he can receive and I have sent for it so I can give it to him at this dedication. I was hoping to find someone who may remember him from the war. He was sent to Korea in July 1952. I do not know exact dates. If you remember him please contact me.

He never said much about Korea like many others, I suspect. My mom always kidded him about all the money she spent sending him wool socks while he was in Korea. He would just smile at her and say that in Korea wet feet could possibly kill you as fast as a bullet. It was their little joke between them. I am sure other troopers felt that way also, when their feet were cold and wet. I hope to hear from others who served in item co. Thanks to all of our veterans. Sincerely, Gary Sonke

DY ANNA H. Giltner wrote on 2004-06-05 11:41:44.0
Comments: My brother, Jack K. Hendrickson, was wounded in an attack on "Bugle Hill" and was evacuated to 8063rd MASH. This was on Nov. 1, 1950, and he died on Nov. 3, 1950. His body was evacuated to the United Nations Military Cemetery outside Pyongyang, N. Korea. The bodies were not recovered during withdrawal and his remains are yet to be recovered. Jack had been stationed in Japan before the war and was in Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division. He was awarded several marksmanship medals while stationed in Japan. He was 17 when enlisted and turned 20 in July 1950 before being killed in Nov 1950. I am hoping I can locate someone who knew him during those years in Japan and anyone who was with him in Korea. I was so young when I last saw him and regrettably so much of his letters, etc. has disappeared during these long years. Our mother and father have both passed away, as well as our brother. I would like to have these memories to add to our families own.

Comments: My Father is Robert (Bob) Perry from Greencastle, Indiana and he was an F.O. for a heavy mortar section in the 5th Cavalry Regiment, Heavy Mortars, 1st Cavalry Division. He was the rank of seargant at the time he was hit which was I believe in September 1950. He was stationed in Yokasuka, Japan at the outbreak of the war and was a part of a rifle team shooting matches against other army posts. He mentioned having friends named Peach and Gomach. I think he would really like to hear from any of his comrades in arms.

Also those who may remember me from Hedquarters Company from September 1950 until mid June 1951.
My interest in contacting verterans from A and HQ Company was regenerated when I was asked to submit to a series of interviews for a Korean War project.
How wonderful it would be to have a Morning Report from both comapnies.

Comments: Thank you Bobby V. for contacting me and giving me some information regarding your experience. It's been nice corresponding with you!
I have spent time going through my father's WWII and Korean War records and was blessed to find documents that my mother didn't even know existed. They have given me a lot of information about his time in Korea.
Jerry Herron...if you're out there (tried contacting you via the email address listed), I knew your name sounded familiar to me and now I know why. I know a couple/few of you vets attended my dad's funeral...thank you!!!
Still trying to piece things together so if anyone is interested in sharing information with me or knew my father, please contact me. Thank you again!

As with a lot of vets, he never spoke of his experiences, only saying "we had a job to do". I want to pass on this information so this will not be forgotten. Comments: In settleing my father's belonging recently, we came across 3 metals. All were 1st Cav. Div., two were marked small arms match and one was marked rifle match. Unlike other metals we found, these did not have my father's name on the, they each had a different name. My fathers name was Master Sergeant Joseph H. White, RA12111763 Infatry, US Army, involved in the Korean Conflict. He received the Bronze Star. I was wondering why he had these metals in his possession and if they belonged to someone else, how would I go about delivering them to the correct person. Can you help?

He was not going to commit his Army to exposure of Plague and the invasion would not take place.Unconfirmed information is that G2 and the CIA got together a team headed by a ? Col Lee of the South Korean?Navy who pullled off a landing on the east coast of Korea and kidnapped two sick north koreans (much like Jessica Lynch in Iraq) with this fever and got them back to the Tokyo Army Hosp:"Not Plague, but hemorrhagic fever" The invasion was on.Any infoormation on this, please. The South Korean officer who pulled this off was decorated by the Army I am told.

He is trying to locate the survivors of his unit which I'm told is about 14 men out of 240. He in addition is looking for 2 specific men Albert Orsky, and Dean Etheridge, but is interested in locating anyone he served with. Please contact me if any of this sounds familiar.

Comments: I am looking for information on my Mom's cousin Donald Jay Burmingham, born in Camden, New York in 1928 , lived in Redfield, Oswego COunty, New York where he enlisted in Army in 1946 at age 17. He served in occupied Japan, was an MP at War crimes trials there. Went to Korea after reenlistment in 1950, declared MIA on September 12, 1950 after engagement (what was battle? where?) near Choson resovoir. He was declared dead January 1, 1953 but no remains ever found. I am writing a Korean War veterens book for town of Redfield, and I have a particular interest in Mom's cousin Don. His brother and two surviving sisters have followed the discovery of remains with anticipation and heartbreak. DOes anyone out there remember Don? can you help us out with anything? Thank You

We spent a lot of time reading his old letters and I really would like to learn more about him. If you served with him please contact me. Thanks! Here is some basic information that I do know: he was KIA on 09/18/50; he was stationed along a river (Naktong maybe?) during the last few weeks of his life; and he was stationed in Japan before going to Korea and served on the rifle team competing in shooting tournaments.

Comments: On July 18, 1950, 0500, Dog Company (5000 troops landed in Pusan, Korea, via landing craft vehicle from the naval ship Cavalier.
After landing, troops immediately moved inland. The night of July 18, 1950, we began receiving enemy fire and through the morning of July 19. Troop movement continued to Taigu, up and down the mountains and across rivers Han Nak Tong, Taigu I believe.
I believe most of company soldiers were wounded or KIA in the first and second weeks of fighting. I heard we lost about two-thirds of the company of 200 men. I myself was wounded on August 1, 1950, approx. 0500.
