Comments: The letter from Mr. Gilbert really suprised me as that was the first time since the Korean war that any mention of the 5th. F. A. Group has ever been seen by me. I was attached to the organization from the 4th Military Intelligence Co. in Japan, to gather intelligence. At first I was assigned to hq., 5th group, then to one of the Field Artillery Battalions. I also flew in the H-19 on some missions and also the L-17 and 19's. Of all the books about the Korean war I have read, I never heard or saw the 5th Group mentioned. I don't remember any of the designations of the battalions but I think the 555th. (Triple Nickle) was one of them. Of course they were overrun and lost many men during the time I was there. The longer it gets from the time I was in Korea, the more I can't remember. I'm close to 70 years old now and it ain't getting any better. I wish you the best of luck in writing a book.At least your grandchildren will know something about it.

Sincerely yours,

Malcolm N. Johnston

5th Field Artillery Group

I'm in the process of writing a book about my experiences in the Army
during the Korean War for my grandchildren. I was assigned to the 5th
Field Artillery Group in the first half of 1953 as an aircraft mechanic
in our Headquarters Battery at A-38, located southwest of the Hwach'on
Reservoir, north of Chunchon.

At that time we were considered to be in North Korea since we were north
of the 38th Parallel.

I'm also looking for the organizational make up of the 5th FA Gp, i.e.,
personnel, battalion designations, when the group was formed, etc. The
three battalions that made up our Group consisted of a 105(SP) Unit, a
155 (SP)Unit and an 8 inch(SP) Unit. For the life of me I can't remember
their designations. Our mission was to support the ROK Infantry
divisions in our sector. We were not part of any American division, but
a stand alone group of the 8th Army.

Also, do you know of any Army maps that define the location of the Army
airfields in Korea at that time. As you probably know, all the Army
airfields are designated with an A-(no.). The Air Force designated
theirs with a K prefix. I was later stationed at A-5 at Chunchon with
the 6th Helicopter Company prior to shipping home.

Flew as a crew member on H-19 helicopters during the prisioner exchange
and transporting the Indian Peace Keeping Force to Panmunjom.
