Comments: Joe, your name rings a loud bell in my head. I'm sure we knew each other well but fifty- some years have taken its toll on this old memory. You may remember me from my hanging around with Ritzma, Slobodnik, and Barger. My E-mail is: mbakely@juno.com

Comments: Andrew Dolan

TROY Andrew Dolan, 75, of 5th Avenue, Troy (Lansingburgh), a retired Troy Police officer and retired Army sergeant, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Dolan retired from the Troy Police force in 1985 after 20 years of being on the job. He spent his early years on the force as a traffic officer at Congress and 4th in downtown Troy where he became a fixture in the city. Many children of the time and people remember Andy from the corner. He is remembered as a tough, honest and caring man. Mr. Dolan was born in Lansingburgh on July 30, 1927. His family spent the next ten years in the Burgh before moving to 129 Beaver Street in Albany, a location now under the South Mall. This address was directly across the street from an Albany Police Station, a move that would influence his entire life. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 16 years old and, over the next 2 years, served aboard the PC USS 576, LST 700 and LST 992. While serving on the troop carriers, his job was to drive the land craft vehicles (LCVs) into beaches. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Albany. Unable to find work, he re-enlisted in the Army in 1948. While in the Army, he rose to the rank of SFC in the military police. He served initially at Schofield in Hawaii and then was sent to Korean in 1950 - War Zone with the 59th MP Company. Upon returning from Korea, he went to Governor's Island, N.Y. with the Honor Guard. From there he was sent back to Japan, then Okinawa and back to Ft. Hamilton, N.Y. before being sent to Vietnam in 1963 as a military police trainer. Returning from Vietnam he was sent to Ft. Devens, Mass. where, in 1965, he retired at age 38 with over 20 years of military service. At retirement he had earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam), Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, four Good Conduct Medals, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Meritorious Unit Citation, Philippine Liberation Medal, Letter of Appreciation and an Army Commendation Medal. He was also a sharpshooter, both carbine and pistol. Andy was predeceased by his wife, Gloria L. Dolan and his father and mother, Andrew D. Dolan (formerly a Troy bus driver) and Elsie May Dolan. Survivors include three sons and one daughter, Andrew J. Dolan, his wife Kathy and children, Andrew, Kristina and Bryan, Peter C. Dolan, his wife Jan and children, Peter and Zachary, Bret A. Dolan, his wife Lynne Ann and children, Bret and Britney, Dorinda A. Dolan and her fiance John Nielsen; two brothers and two sisters, William Bill Dolan (ret. Albany Police) and wife Irene, Francis Pat Dolan (ret. Albany Police) and his late wife Dottie, Molly Donahue and husband Dan and Elsie Craig; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Tuesday, 9 a.m. at the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, 109th Street and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh. Burial will follow in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 will be appreciated.
