Comments: My father, Floyd Hodnett Cpl.(T), served from 1950-1952. He was from West Point, Mississippi. He was in the 3rd armored division, Battery "C", 57th FA Bn. I was wondering if anyone remembered him. He did not talk about the war very much and I would like to know the details of what he went through and guys that served with him. My first name is Rodney and I think I was named after one of his buddies who got killed. Sure would like to hear from someone even if you didn't know him.

Comments: Hi, I'm looking for any information on "Jerry the Tramp". That is how he signed his paintings. He was a soldier that served in Korea along with my dad, Chaplain Gerald Weaver in 1953 or so. He used to paint naked ladies on the lockers for the soldiers.
My dad got tired of seeing all the scantily clad paintings, so he asked him to paint something more inspiring. Jerry painted a head of Christ, which my dad used to decorate the chapel tent used out in the "field" of Korea. My dad was stationed near the 38th parallel with the 57th field artillery of the 7th Infantry Division.
When he came back to the USA, he had the painting hanging in his office study for many years. He finally gave the painting to me a few years ago, but, I don't have any place for it. I'm an artist myself and don't have enough room for my own paintings.
My dad is 91 years old now and still doing well. I asked him if he knew more about Jerry the Tramp, and he didn't remember his real name, or where he might be now.
I would like to sell the painting of his head of Christ, but, wanted to know the historic story about it. If you know anything about "Jerry, the Tramp" soldier artist, please contact me!

Comments: My Dad, J E Lawrence served in Korea at Chosin. He passed on 1/4/07. He was a Sgt and worked in the motor pool A Btry 57thFA BN 7thINF DIV. I am very interested in finding out any info that anyone can provide on his time (Nov-Dec 1950) at Chosin so that I may find out what these brave men went thru and that I can better understand my Dad. He rarely spoke of his time there but what little that was said was hard for us to hear and I'm sure even harder for him to say.
I have a roster from Nov-Dec 1950 that was provided to my Dad several years ago and would love to share it with anyone who is interested.
I would appreciate any help I can get in researching this awful time in so many people's life that affected them for the rest of their lives.
Thank you so much Vicky Young

There's a very special place in my heart for all of you KWVsand especially for the ones that never made it back to the States. I would like to know if any soldier has ever been to Star of the Sea Orphanage and when. I've never connected to anyone that's ever been there personally except for the American Priest who was in charge of the orphanage whom I later in life met long after I'd been in the States. (He's passed on now) I miss home so much. This would give me a touch of home somewhat. I have both fond and painful memories of Inchon. I never did live long enough in Inchon to see other parts of Korea. I would really like to reminesse about the orphanage. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart to all the KWVs!!!! I love you all.

Comments: Thank you all Vets and families for your service and sacrifices!
I'd like to add a few tidbits that I missed in my earlier post today regarding Sgt. Len George. I just found a little newspaper article that spelled his name "Lendal". it also stated that he served as 8chief of section for the sixth section*, B Battery 57th Fa Bn, 7th Div.. "A section chief commands the 11 man gun crew maintaining one 195 millimeter howitzer during combat." The article was commending Dad because he was named by his commanding officer as American Red Cross Fund Campaign Chairman for B Battery and that because of the "hard work of such men as Sgt. George, 7th division is leading in contributions for the Korean Zone in the 1954 Red Cross campaign". *Another article quote: "Sgt. George says that his most memorable experience of the war occured during the week July 4 to 9, 1953, when his gun crew operated fired continuously without a cease fire."

Comments: My Uncle Jim was declared MIA Dec. 6, 1950, a year before I was born. However, his sister (my mother) was very close to him and the recipient of his medals. We have wondered about him all these years and would feel extremely grateful to anyone who knew him, any anecdotes they might remember about him, and any ideas of the last time he was seen. He was from Toledo, OH, and the army had paid to have his teeth fixed. Ring any bells? We hope so!!

CHOSIN - DEC. 1950 - JOSEPH 'DALE' YENGER |
 |

Diana Fessler wrote on 2003-12-28 22:40:01.0
Comments: I am writing the story of each man from Miami County, OH that was KIA/MIA during the Korean War.
Currently, I am doing research on SFC Joseph "Dale" Yenger.
During WWI, he was in the Navy. In 1949, he enlisted in the Army, did basic at Ft. Knox, transferred to Ft. Lawton, and then to Japan for a tour of occupation duty in 1949.
On June 7, 1950 he was assigned to Battery A of the 57th FAB. MOS 2844. Sailed into Pusan aboard the General Patrick. Part of second Iwon landing on Nov. 3rd.
In 1950 he would have been 37 years of age. He was a sturdy type of man with dark hair and dark eyes. He married the same woman twice. Her name was Virginia and they had a son who was about fourteen when Dale died.
Dale was formally declared MIA on 12/6/50, a casualty of the Chosin Reservoir battle (Task Force MacLean/Faith.
If you have specific information, please contact me.

Last seen alive on the night of December 01, 1950 when the 31st RCT was shattered near Hudong-ni on the road to Hagaru-ri. Uncle Chris was a 57mm Recoilless Rifle operator in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 31st Inf Regt. Company L was assigned overlooking the Pungnyuri-gang River inlet bridge on November 27. Just hoping somebody in the 57th Field Artilery might have come across Uncle Chris during the battle East of Chosin. God Bless the Chosin Few.

He has been gone for several years, and I only learned of his being there about ten years ago. I know that he was wounded three times and made it out to Hagaru-Ri, and was sent to a hospital in Japan where he met my mother. If anyone can share some of what he and all of you went through there I would be grateful.

Comments: When I first arrived in country, my battalion was in the Hwachon Valley. We moved in about November to the Punchbowl area.
I would like to know if the 7th Infantry Division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (Army-Air Force) and the dates it was awarded. I have crossed paths with former members of the division who wore it but I was never awarded one so I don't know if I might be entitled to it or not. I would appreciate it if someone who knows could let me know. If the division was awarded it, I believe that all division members could wear it, also.
I returned to the Division in 1969 and commanded the 7th Aviation Battalion until December of that year. I, and the 7th Division Chief of Staff and I were the only members of the Division Hearquarters who wore the Hourglass on both shoulders. We were proud of that.
I retired on 1 September 1979 after over 35 years of service, but that is another story.

Comments: For a study of the casualties incurred by TF Faith (31st Regimental Combat Team) from 27 November 1950-03 December 1950, I would like help in determining individuals unit assignments.
Using the KWP and a 7th Division site I have been able to populate databases with the information related to the units of TF Faith. However these records only provide unit information to the regiment level. In order to make sense of the records as they relate to TF Faith I need to find an individual's Battalion, Company/Battery and Platoon level (if possible) for the units listed below.
I am particularly interested in obtaining copies of contemporary documentation (rosters, morning reports, special orders, reports, letters, etc.) that may aid in these identifications. Lists of names and unit designations of individuals that you recall would also be of interest.
HQ and HQ Co. 31st Reg. 31st Tank Co. 31st HM Co (firing platoons and HQ) Service Co. Medical Co. 31st Inf. 1 platoon C Co., 13th Engineers
1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry HQ and HQ Co. A, B, C, D Co. 1 platoon HM Co., 32nd Inf. USMC (Anglico) TACP
3st Battalion, 31st Infantry HQ and HQ Co. I, K, L, M Co. USAF TACP
57th Field Artillery Battalion HQ and HQ Battery A and B Battery D Battery (-) 15th AAA AW Bn. (attached) Service Battery, 57th FA Bn.

Comments: Documents tell us Freeman was captured Dec. 6,1950 and died as POW by March, 1951. I realize now he was probably part of Chosin. It was a newspaper article that mentioned the ROK medal that brought Freeman into our conversations and we started investigating since my father is his oldest surviving brother. If it were not for this website, we would not have discovered that we were "A Lost Family," meaning the DOD or Army had no address for any family member since 1954. It was also through this website that we learned DNA is requested. We know the odds are long of his remains ever being recovered, but we still decided to go forward since we know there are only 7 family members at most who could provide the needed DNA for testing. (There was only one sister in the family and my grandmother only had a brother. My father never talked about what happened to Corky, but we knew the subject was painful for the family. I have learned more about the Korean War in the last two weeks than than I have throughout my life, which didn't start until several years after the fighting in Korea ended.I might also note that the people in the casualty office for Korea had high praise for this website. It is in part because of this website, I know my uncle is not forgotten by others although he was only 19 when he died.

Comments: From a list of 844 men from the Chosin battle area. Eldon C. Justus is among them lost between 28 Nov-6 Dec."50. Here is what I have on him. SFC, Serial # 19213010, 57th FA. BN.
Although the majority of these men were killed or captured on Dec. 1st or 2nd, due to the great loss of men, reports on their status were not written until Dec. 6th, and that is a date referred to frequently on MIA's and KIA's.
For anyone who is interested who knows what happened to the soldiers of "Task Force Faith", on Chosin's East side, or of these missing please send me a message - paulhyman@humboldt1.com Our whole family will thank you.

The culmination of the research will be a book called Ice Blood. Blood means life. All of the blood we left there is the reason for the title Ice Blood.

Comments: Hal & Ted, I guess I'm long overdue getting into your guestbook, but you had my picture on your web page 6 months before I even saw it. I guess I'm slow at everything. I can't thank you enough for the fine job you are doing for the Korean War veterans and their families. From the pictures of me that you put on your web page, I've received several letters from family members asking me if I could shed some light on the death or disappearance of a loved one at the Chosin Reservoir. I have responded to all the letters telling them of the circumstances at the time, which may be of some help to them. The passage of time does not seem to ease the pain of the loss, and I can tell you that from first-hand experience. Your web site however, does I'm sure, bring a lot of people closer to closure. Please keep up your fine work.

Went back to Seoul and Inchon, Korea in September on the Korea Revisit
Program sponsored by the Korean government and the Korean Veterans,
for American Vets (and others) who fought in the Korean War.
Of course, none of the 120 vets in my group recognized anything, as a
new super-city with modern freeways and high-rises stands where the old
burning and bombed out buildings did when we went through the cities
some 47 years ago.
Although the guys in my squad were all killed at the Chosin Reservoir,
and are still carried as MIA, none of them were in the machine-gunned
ambulance that I crawled out of during the early morning hours of
December 2, 1950, during the attempted breakout from the East side
of Chosin.
This is the area where so very many soldiers were lost to the
overwhelming numbers of Chinese who fragmented and ultimately destroyed
the wounded convoy of trucks trying to reach the Marine position at
Hagaru-ri.
Although the majority of these men were killed or captured on Dec. 1st
or 2nd, due to the great loss of men, reports on their status were not
written until Dec. 6th, and that is a date you will see referred to
frequently on MIA's and KIA's.
For anyone who is interested in knowing what happened to the soldiers
of "Task Force Faith", on Chosin's East side, I would recommend they
they obtain a copy of "EAST OF CHOSIN" by Roy Appleman. The story of
the Marines on the South and West of the Reservoir are told in
"CHOSIN" by Eric Hammel. Both books are eye-openers.

My brother, Pvt.(at the time)Benjamin Bazzell, 57th FA, 7thID,
was reported MIA 12-6-50. Last seen near Haguru-Ri.
Parents have passed away since but my 2 sisters and I are
still trying to find info as to his status previous to and during
the battle in which he was reported MIA.
I was aboard the USS Bayfield and participated in evacuating the last
troops out of North Korea on 12-25-50. My brother, which I didn't
know at the time, should have been there to be evacuated but didn't
make it. Naturally, my sisters and I have been very curious about his
fate since and our Mother, we know, went to her grave at a young age
looking for her son or information as to his fate.
Ben was from Seymour, Connecticut at the time of his MIA. It's my
understanding that a Robert Hammond was a survivor of his squad in the
57th and had some information on the fate of men missing and killed
during that evacuation.
I would love to have his address or Email address if possible to
communicate with him. Thank you in advance for your help and concern.

I received your e mail and thank you for taking the time to answer.
I was looking for Walter E. Kelly for my dad, William A Jones. He has
looked for this man for a number of years. They were friends during
their service time.
If by some chance you pass the name some where I would be grateful for
your notice. As I said they were in the 7th Div.57th field arty. C
battery, lt. Archabold Arnold.
Again thank you for your response my dad never talked much about this
time only about his friend.
Sincerely,
S. Scott beccann@ nauticom.net

I was in the 57th FA BA HQ Battery from the middle of 1952 to the middle
of 1953. Have only been in contact with one of my buddies since. I
have quite a few slides that I took during the war. Haven't looked at
them in years but have some nice photographs.

I would like to know if anyone knew of my father, Christino Navalta who
served in the Korean War. He was in the Battery B, 57th Field Artillery
Battalion and he was injured in the war on July 9, 1953 while trying to
rescue trapped personnel.
We received a call from someone in Ohio who called my dad's house on
6/25/98, but failed to leave his name and number.
Please e-mail me soon so I can find out if anyone knew of my father. I
really appreciate it! Thank you!

We are his cousins located in Akron, Michigan. We are attempting to get
more information on him.
We know his remains are now located in Hawaii, however, we do not know
any more than that. We would like to know where exactly his remains
are.
Please provide me with information on how I can find this information.
I will be in your debt. If you would like more information to
add to your database I will be happy to provide you with the
information we have. For example we know he is survived by 1 brother
living in New Mexico, various cousins.
Thank you.
