Comments: My Uncle Jim was declared MIA Dec. 6, 1950, a year before I was born. However, his sister (my mother) was very close to him and the recipient of his medals. We have wondered about him all these years and would feel extremely grateful to anyone who knew him, any anecdotes they might remember about him, and any ideas of the last time he was seen. He was from Toledo, OH, and the army had paid to have his teeth fixed. Ring any bells? We hope so!!

CHOSIN - DEC. 1950 - JOSEPH 'DALE' YENGER |

Diana Fessler wrote on 2003-12-28 22:40:01.0
Comments: I am writing the story of each man from Miami County, OH that was KIA/MIA during the Korean War.
Currently, I am doing research on SFC Joseph "Dale" Yenger.
During WWI, he was in the Navy. In 1949, he enlisted in the Army, did basic at Ft. Knox, transferred to Ft. Lawton, and then to Japan for a tour of occupation duty in 1949.
On June 7, 1950 he was assigned to Battery A of the 57th FAB. MOS 2844. Sailed into Pusan aboard the General Patrick. Part of second Iwon landing on Nov. 3rd.
In 1950 he would have been 37 years of age. He was a sturdy type of man with dark hair and dark eyes. He married the same woman twice. Her name was Virginia and they had a son who was about fourteen when Dale died.
Dale was formally declared MIA on 12/6/50, a casualty of the Chosin Reservoir battle (Task Force MacLean/Faith.
If you have specific information, please contact me.

Last seen alive on the night of December 01, 1950 when the 31st RCT was shattered near Hudong-ni on the road to Hagaru-ri. Uncle Chris was a 57mm Recoilless Rifle operator in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 31st Inf Regt. Company L was assigned overlooking the Pungnyuri-gang River inlet bridge on November 27. Just hoping somebody in the 57th Field Artilery might have come across Uncle Chris during the battle East of Chosin. God Bless the Chosin Few.

Comments: I have been reading East of Chosin for the second time because it seems to be the only real account of this battle that changed my father for the remainder of his life. He has been gone for several years, and I only learned of his being there about ten years ago. I know that he was wounded three times and made it out to Hagaru-Ri, and was sent to a hospital in Japan where he met my mother. If anyone can share some of what he and all of you went through there I would be grateful.

Comments: When I first arrived in country, my battalion was in the Hwachon Valley. We moved in about November to the Punchbowl area.
I would like to know if the 7th Infantry Division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (Army-Air Force) and the dates it was awarded. I have crossed paths with former members of the division who wore it but I was never awarded one so I don't know if I might be entitled to it or not. I would appreciate it if someone who knows could let me know. If the division was awarded it, I believe that all division members could wear it, also.
I returned to the Division in 1969 and commanded the 7th Aviation Battalion until December of that year. I, and the 7th Division Chief of Staff and I were the only members of the Division Hearquarters who wore the Hourglass on both shoulders. We were proud of that.
I retired on 1 September 1979 after over 35 years of service, but that is another story.

Comments: For a study of the casualties incurred by TF Faith (31st Regimental Combat Team) from 27 November 1950-03 December 1950, I would like help in determining individuals unit assignments.
Using the KWP and a 7th Division site I have been able to populate databases with the information related to the units of TF Faith. However these records only provide unit information to the regiment level. In order to make sense of the records as they relate to TF Faith I need to find an individual's Battalion, Company/Battery and Platoon level (if possible) for the units listed below.
I am particularly interested in obtaining copies of contemporary documentation (rosters, morning reports, special orders, reports, letters, etc.) that may aid in these identifications. Lists of names and unit designations of individuals that you recall would also be of interest.
HQ and HQ Co. 31st Reg. 31st Tank Co. 31st HM Co (firing platoons and HQ) Service Co. Medical Co. 31st Inf. 1 platoon C Co., 13th Engineers
1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry HQ and HQ Co. A, B, C, D Co. 1 platoon HM Co., 32nd Inf. USMC (Anglico) TACP

Comments: Documents tell us Freeman was captured Dec. 6,1950 and died as POW by March, 1951. I realize now he was probably part of Chosin. It was a newspaper article that mentioned the ROK medal that brought Freeman into our conversations and we started investigating since my father is his oldest surviving brother. If it were not for this website, we would not have discovered that we were "A Lost Family," meaning the DOD or Army had no address for any family member since 1954. It was also through this website that we learned DNA is requested. We know the odds are long of his remains ever being recovered, but we still decided to go forward since we know there are only 7 family members at most who could provide the needed DNA for testing. (There was only one sister in the family and my grandmother only had a brother. My father never talked about what happened to Corky, but we knew the subject was painful for the family. I have learned more about the Korean War in the last two weeks than than I have throughout my life, which didn't start until several years after the fighting in Korea ended.I might also note that the people in the casualty office for Korea had high praise for this website. It is in part because of this website, I know my uncle is not forgotten by others although he was only 19 when he died.
