Comments: My great uncle was taken prisoner near Chongpyong, South Korea, April 25th 1951 and presumed dead Sept. 28th 1951. We were told he was left alone in a POW camp when other POW's were moved and he had a leg injury preventing him from walking without help. His captors would not let anyone help him and left him behind. PLEASE if anyone knows anything about my uncle contact me.

Comments: i'm writing this on behalf of my dad, jack barrett. he was in korea with the 17th field artillery from 1950-51. he frequently speaks of being surrounded by enemies at kunu-ri for 3 days (11/26-28/1950) when suddenly, an opening occurred giving his group a chance to find safety. this was due to the efforts of the triple nickel field artillery group. he never found any information on what happened to them after that day, but he fears they might not have made it out. any information at all would be greatly appreciated!! God bless and Happy Veteran's Day!!

Comments: I am looking for pictures or stories concerning my Dad's service in Korea. He spoke very rarely about it except to say that it was one of the best things that ever happened to him. He was in the 555th Artillery. I think he worked in the supplies area. He had a good friend Don Gottman who he also served with. Both are gone now. My dad died on Sept 22, 2001, 11 days after 9/11. He was exactly 70 years and 1 month old when he died. He owned a flag business, The National Flag Company in Cincinnati OH for many years. My younger brother Art Jr now runs the business.

We are planning a veterans celebration Mass at my parish in November and I was looking for pictures or articles that I could use for display.

I would appreciate any information or stories about my dad or the 555th deployment in Korea

My father became an alcoholic after the Korean War and committed suicide in January of 1978.

I would like to find out if he is due any medals since he told my brother that he was wounded during the attack.

Thank you.

Comments: My Dad, Duane Baker, served in the 555th B Battery from Fall 1951 to Summer 1952.

He was headin to the front line with the infantry when he was pulled by role call from his truck and sent into B Battery of the 555th.

He called his unit a "bastard unit" as they served may different units of the US, ROK, Turks and Ethiopians.

Weeks after he left the Battery was overrun and "bugged out". He was a Sgt 1st Class when he left.

He served with the 555 Field Artillery unit of the 5th RCT, Korea, 1952-53.He remembers the night the Chinese overran the ROK's in front of their unit and had to "bug out" fast. He left everything behind but his helmet and rifle. They threw thermite charges down the barrels of their guns to make them unusable for the Chinese. I believe this was along the parallel in either 1952 or early 53. Not sure.

Thanks, Rob Mitchell

Comments: My father was in the 555th as a forward observer in Korea. He was awarded two bronze service stars for his actions when the ROKS deserted. He barely got out of there with his life. His name was Robert L. Adkins. He spent 2 years in the U.S. Army. He was honorably disharged with the rank of corporal. He passed away in June 1993. He was given full military honors and a 21 gun salute at his burial. He sure didn't like talking too much about his experiences in Korea but he thought and spoke highly of the men he served with, officers and enlisted men alike. Do any of you honorable Korean war vets remember him?

Cannoneer in the Korean war from January 1950 to 1951

John Rentz wrote on 2006-08-15 08:19:08.0

Comments: I am the daughter of John Rentz, who fought in the Korean war from January 1950 to 1951. My father was a cannoneer. He also fought in WWII in 1947. My father sat the site on the gun and fired when ordered. His gun was hit and my father was hit by shrapnel that destoryed the right side of his skull. He was taken to a hospital in Pusson where he had to have a steel plate put in his head. My father has been trying to get his pension for years now. Our wonderful VA claims his medical record burnt and there is no proof that he has the steel plate. He has been getting the run around for years now. We are in the process of trying again. My father is 86 years old and is in fair health, he deserves his money.

Can anyone help us or give us some suggestion on what to do.

We also have a few pictures and was wondering if any body out there would like to see them and identify the people in them. One picture in particular is of a young Korean Boy approximately 10 years old dressed in a assortmant of army hand me down cloths. My uncle said he was kind of like a unit mascot and after the unit was overrun he never saw him again. According to my Uncles DD214 he was assigned to the Service Battery Company. He was a truck driver and a welder and served from 1953 to 1954. He was wounded by sharpnel in the legs and stomache. He was from a small town in Missouri called Lutesville. Thank you for taking time to read this and God Bless you all and keep you in good health.

Comments: I am trying to make sense of my fathers experiences in Korea. He shared very little with us because I think it was just too overwhelming. However, there was one story he would tell about the Native American soldier who saved his life who was nicknamed Pooch. We do not know his proper name. However, if you know of him or how we could reach him, we would be grateful to hear from you.

Comments: I found an article that stated "The Army today identified the 555th Field battalion as the American unit overrun by the Chinese on July 14----on the east central front. It was one of the worst massacres of Americans in the Korean war and second in Korea for the 555th Field Artillery battalion. The Battalion on July 14 was firing support for the ROK Capitol division defending a line between Kumhwa and Kumsong. About three divisions of Chinese hit the division about 9:45p.m., July 13. The line buckled and at 2:05 a.m. the Chinese assaulted the artillery battalion. The battalion came out with only five of its 105 howitzers. There were very heavy losses of personnel and equipment. The first time the Chinese swarmed over the battalion was Apr. 24, 1951, on the 38th parallel near Seoul. The battalion lost 11 of its howitzers."

This is a very old article and some of the print has been damaged, but, if you can identify with any of the information in this article, please contact my husband. He has some pictures of the his unit. He would love to hear from you.

Comments: As my father spoke about the 5th he spoke highly of this unit, the triple nickle. He spent 23 years in the Army, two tours in Vietnam but he often said none of his years could compare to the time he spent in the 5th.He told me about the tough time and the good times, most were bad. He often took those toughts to sleep with him and when he woke they were gone for a short time. I loved him very much and will miss him daily. The thing I feel for is that he really was not rewarded, please someone help me to gather information..

I have pictures I would like to get to the 5th they are unit pictures 1949, E co.

Comments: I arrived in Korea Oct '5l assigned to HHB, 24th Inf Div Arty as Intel NCO. In Jan '52 I was reassigned to the "triple nickel" where I stayed as 1SG of Btry B until rotation in September. There is one incident I like to recall that indicates one way in which trust and respect can be promoted between infantry and artillery. When we moved into the Punch Bowl area supporting the 25th Div our battalion commander visited our OP's in the forward positions. One infantry commander complained about a sniper that was causing them great concern. He was located at a far range, evidentally using an anti-tank rifle and well secluded in a large rocky area. Their mortars and recoilless rifle had been unsuccessful in silencing him. So, my CO had a fire mission called and after a few adjusting rounds called for a "battalion 3 rounds" (36 rounds in those days). They heard no more from that sniper.

He also spent some time driving the tugs used to tow tanks. He is alive and well and living in Waxhaw, NC. If anyone remembers him you can contact me at my email. jeffdav@bellsouth.net

Capt Waldron was from Peoria, Illinois. I had attended high school with him there, but had not seen him for several years before we met on board the Marine Serpent. I later heard that he stayed on active duty after Korean service and may have attained rank of Lt Col. He died in Austin, Texas in February 1985. After a 6 month search,I have just reunited two army korean vets who havent seen each other in 46 years. Carl Brown and George Domin. They were in the 555 FA BN together. They were reunited at a Madison Hospital on December 15th l999, complete with news, and newspaper coverage. The bad news is that Carl Brown is in the hospital with 40% of his body burned. I have set up a Carl Brown Burn Fund at Tri City National Bank- 6400 S. 27th Street-Oak Creek WI 53154-1097 to help out with the many skin graphs and medical expenses, not to mention transport to and from the hospital when he gets out and a special bed that he needs at home. We need your help. Please donate to this fund to help out an injured vet.

If you have any other questions about this reunion or this fund, I will try to get back to you A.S.A.P.

Thanks in advance for your help!

555 Field Artillery

From: Sam Stratton

I am making this inquiry on behalf of my father Glen T. Stratton.
We are trying to find an army soldier by the name of Percy
Mcbride from Seattle, WA.

He and my Father were good friends when they were in the Army
together. Here are the details. They arrived at Camp San Louis Obisbo,
CA in July of 1952 and had 8 weeks of basic training and then 8 weeks
of Signal Corp.

It ended in November of 1952 and in December of the same year
they were shipped to Japan and spent 6 to 8 weeks at Camp Eta Jema
(not sure aboutthe spelling) after that they went to Pusson and that
was the last time my Father saw him.

He believes he was sent to an artillery battalion. If it helps, My Father
was part of The 555 Field Artillery attached to the
5th Regimental Combat Team.

Please e-mail me with any information you have about Percy Mcbride.
Judging by the way my Dad talks about him he was pretty special.

Thank You very much and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely
Sam Stratton sckstrat@pacbell.net

Have had no contact with anyone since leaving Korea. As an item of
interest, when we arrived at Puson on the General Haus, there was a
Brass Band to greet us, and the song they played was "If I knew you
were comming, I'd have baked a Cake".

Also, do your records have anything on a Bobby Z. Yankee from Tenn.
He was 17 when our Observation Post was hit by Artillary, I have
searched the Web but he is not listed.

I never heard if he lived after leaving the Aid Station. I have found our
Lieutenant (I think) now in Florida. He is Jerome J. Tenbieg, Clearwater,
Fl. 813-536-4874. I have never reached this number to confirm.

From KWP: Bobby was evacuated to Japan.

and went to El Paso, Texas for training, then on to Korean with the
24th, and I am proud to say he was a part of the (Triple Nickel).

I have his old pictures from Korea, the ones that survived a house fire.

My dad is alive and well even after being wounded in Korea. He is 68
years old, still works 12 hours a day.

He is a good and strong man. He has six children that he loves. He
