Comments: For years I wanted to forget that place, but now it might be nice to connect with those who shared that experience. I was bounced around from B company to tdy at headquarters company, and then some desolate hill top up near the 7th division. Five of us manned a Radio Relay site 24/7. What ever happened to Sgt. Walsh, Pfc. Huff, and blue.

Comments: I have lost contact with most of the friends I had while at Camp Red Cloud. Several of us have maintained contact and meet every year or so. I would love to hear from some of my friends that I've lost track of over the years. Roberta Headley, Beth Person, John Edwards, Tony Pisano, to name a few.

Keywords: I am looking for anyone who served with John Capps of Atlanta, GA, that might remember him. He had basic training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, in March of 1954. He then went to Camp Gordon for more training and attended Southheastern Signal School, part of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was stationed in Korea at I-Corps outside of Uijonbu Korea in the Jackson VHF and provided I-Corps with radio telephone service. He was there until he went home in 1956. He doesn't remember anybody's names really except a Master Sergeant Cook and maybe a Cavanaugh. He was hospitalized at Camp Gordon in 1954, but all of their records have been destroyed. I am trying to help him prove that he was even in the Army since the records were destroyed by a fire in Saint Louis, MO. All of his personal information he had was also destroyed in a house fire. We would like to have proof and don't know how to get it so he can be officially recognized by our country and might be able to get some medical benefits as well. Thanks for looking

Tommy Thompson wrote on 2009-03-11 19:08:33.0
Comments: Dear Alumni: 03-11-2009 I joined the 51st Signal Bn in Jan, 1951. The headquarters wind up in Uijongbu. I was in R&M Co., Radio platoon. When I got there we had several SCR 196 and SCR 399. I was a high speed radio operator. Just before I left we got our 399's replaced by ANGR 26's.
I have been a member of our Alumni Asso. since 1998. We have annual reunions. The up coming Reunion will be at Ft. Gordon, GA/ Augusta, GA. I talked to our host, Ltc Joe Tragaski yesterday. He has all the events lined up, but we were waiting for the dates for the Signal Corp Ball. Everything is all set.
Our web site: www2.itexas.net/tom
Our Alumni Asso is supported and sponsored by: Col John Baker, CO 35th Signal Brigade, Ft. Gordon, GA and by Ltc Paul Fredenburgh, CO 51st Signal Bn, Ft. Lewis, Ft Lewis, WA/ Iraq. The 51st Signal is in Iraq as you read this message, they will be back to Ft. Lewis, WA, late this year. I will be sending a News Letter this week, about the 2009 Reunion.
I see all these flags in people's yards. They say we support our troops, but do they really support the physically. The way I see it is if you want to show support, go visit with the troop. Tell then in person that you support them. The easiest way to show your support is the make plans to attend our 2009 Reunion at Ft. Gordon, GA. Headquarters:
Americas Best Inns - Augusta Grovetown 461 Parkwest Drive Augusta, GA 30813 (706) 855-9111
Each alumni has to make his/her reservation be fore May 20, 2009 Rooms: Singles and doubles will be $65.00.
The dates will be June 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th, 2009. Put these dates aside.
You will not only get the chance to meet with the troops and officers, but to talk with them and break bread with them. We will meet with each company and have the chance to tell them your experiences and hear theirs. Last year many of the Alumni brought pictures and tools that they used during their service.
Tommy T email me at ---- tom@itexas.net
ü 51st Signal Bn Alumni Asso ü
Wooraahh !!! We are off to Ft. Gordon, GA 2009 Reunion June 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th
The 51st Signal Bn was been deployed to Iraq. They left Ft. Lewis in August, 2008. They will not be back till later this year. We have received several News Letters from Iraq. If you have access to the internet, go to www2.itexas.net/tom to read them.
As they will be out of the country, we have been invited, by Col John W, Baker, CO, 35th Signal Brigade to come to Ft. Gordon, GA. He has asked Ltc Joe Tragaski, CO, 67th Signal Bn. to host our Reunion. I was able to meet with Col Baker and Ltc Tragaski earlier this year at Ft. Gordon. Ltc Tragaski has gone to a lot of trouble to help us out, so I want all you people to make a special effort to attend. There will be two day of non-stop activities planned by Ltc Tragaski and his staff. There will be good food and fun for all. If it is possible for you to bring either pictures or tools you used while serving with the 51st, , be sure to bring them. We will have one evening at our hotel and two evenings a Ft. Gordon. Part of our visit will be a Signal Corp Ball. If you have never seen one, it will be an experience of a life time to see all the fine young people turned out in their Dress Blue Uniforms. There will be several important ceremonies taking place there.
Augusta, GA is a large city with many thing to see, so you may want to make our Reunion a Family thing. I-20 goes right through town and our hotel is just one block south off I-20 at exit 194.
Editor note: P-2 Para-2 L-3, should read without a hitch, sorry.
2009 Reunion

Comments: Hello All,
I am looking for any information on Frederick Charles Johnson, he served in Korea from 1958-1960. When he came home he married and had a son, Michael...I am Mike's wife.
Frederick(Freddie?) died when Michael was only 4. He was a linemen in MD and perished at work.
Through the years he has always wanted to know more about his dad, and I am hoping that maybe someone out there remembers him, I know Mike would love to hear about what his father did over there. He never got to hear the old war stories from Dad himself.
When Mike's dad died, they were given a flag at his burial in a national cemetary in Maryland...that flag was lost in a move some years back, and I also wanted to know if anyone knew how I could get a replacement for him.
Thank you so much!

Fellow Battalion member:
I am Tommy Thompson ( reunion co-ordinator) I live in Granbury, TX. My phone: (817) 326-4773 Fax: (817) 326-5990 Email: tom@itexas.net
I served with the 51st in Korea, 1952-53, R&M Co, Radio Platoon. I was a high speed radio operator. I started out working on a SCR-399 ( morse code operated ) and later we got ANGRC-26 ( radio teletype units). As most of us, I was on TDY away from our platoon most of the time, and from our Hq. in Uijongbu, South Korea. I spent most of my time out in the field up North, where it was colder that hell. I hope you faired better.
We have just concluded our 6th Reunion, in Dallas, TX, Sept. 9, 10 and 11, 2003. Our host was Rex Searson, Former CO, R&M Co., 1953-54. Our guest speaker was Col. Wiley Bell, former message cnt. CO, R&M Co., 1953-54.
Our next reunion will be Sept. 7, 8 and 9, 2004, in either Branson MO. or Nashville TN. ?? Our reunions will be opened to all members from 1916 to 2004. Our dues are $10.00 a year.
This money goes toward operating our Web Site www2.itexas.net/tom and putting out our news letters.
Sincerely yours,

Monty Oakes wrote on 2003-08-14 07:04:52.0
Comments: Did you know my Uncle, Arther W. Oakes, SFC, Co. B, 51st Signals BN, I Corps?
He earned the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in Korea March 15-April 15, 1950. Certificate was signed by : MG Bergin, ADJ GEN and Frank Pace Jr., SEC Army. Told me the 'Team' earned it, not him. He was only singled out to receive it. Uncle Art claimed the Japanese wiring from WWII was better than our own and he would just fix the old rather than replace it with the new. Said he was almost crushed by one of our tanks that slipped off the road into his cable ditch one day. Never talked about the snipers nor the Pusan perimeter breakout.
He also served with the 3115th Signals BN in the ETO, Belgian sector very near the Bulge, but said little about it. Am trying to get a unit history of the 3115th. Can you tell me how? Most resource histories start with a Division or Army and then list the units attached to them. Uncle Art was also attached to the ETO Communications Zone(?) and I only learned that because of a shoulder patch that he had in his collection. That's how I learned of the I Corps connection as well, because of the patch. Do you have a unit history of the 51st in Korea? What awards did the unit earn?
Thanx, Monty

Remember the walks across rice patties to Red Cloud? Debbie's Hideaway? Sign..."Here stands the only person in the 51st Signal Battalion who knows exactly what he is doing?" (wall of outdoor urinal) walks across the bridge to work? Col Rienzi and his swagger stick? Alerts out in the field in zero temperatures? Sgt. Aguilar throwing up on company runs? ICorps basketball team? Have some pictures and lots of memories. While there was commissioned to write a 51st Signal Bn history which was published. Anyone know where a copy might be? Went back about seven years ago...things drastically changed! Clindard's Corner, Red Cloud, Hq compound hardly recognizable. Nothing now but large metropolitan city.

Comments: Had a well rounded tour of duty in Korea from December 71 to December 72. Worked at the CESCON Communication Center most of the time. Played in a band with a couple other guys and drove around the countryside a bunch. Though there was a conflict going on within the country and South of us Viet Nam... I tried to make the best of it all. And so here we are left with all the crazy memories... some worth remembering and others best forgotten. Those were the days weren't they guys. I'm still here and hope you are as well... contact me at my email.

Cold as hell coming up from Pusan.
Remember 1st Cav. Infantry there at Unijonbu when we arrived, many still in their foxholes. Took a while to find Company "B" there in the area. Had a hot meal I remember..we were all hungary.
Anyway..enough for now. Anyone out there when I was..with company "B"??

Need CCKW Sig Corps Photos |

 |
Brian Colburn wrote on 2001-03-09 15:14:50.0
Comments: Looking for photos of a GMC CCKW 2.5 ton 6x6 truck with the Signal Corps telephone repair body on it. This is a large sheet steel body that extends up to the height of a normal canvas top. The top is open with a retractable canvas cover. There is pole setting equipment and cable spooling equipment on board. The rear is open. It is definitely not one of the Chevy 1.5 ton 4x4 models.
These were used by the 51st Signal Battalion in Korea. My father took a photo of the rear of one during the war, marked I-51s B-52 meaning I-Corps, 51st Signal, Company B, truck 52.
I would like to build a model of one of these trucks, but need more photos, especially the sides and interior.
I would also like photos of any M37's used in the late stages of the Korean War.
My email is Dodge_M37@lycos.com

Comments: Arrived in Korea August of 1950 at Puzan. The first advance I remember was into Taogu. There was a sign someone had put up that read "Tea for Two in old Taogu". I advance with the Eighth to somewhere near the Yalu River. When I rotated out I was in Uijongnu.
I was with the 51st at Ft. Meade, MD. From there we were sent to Japan. Arrived in Korea in Aug. 1950 and rotated out in Feb. 1952.
