Comments: Seeking any information about the unit/personnel that were stationed where L-19 aircraft were maintained and flew from around Uijongbu during the war. My dad was a mechanic/crew chief of those aircraft and I am trying to find out more about the location he may have been stationed, the unit history, etc...

Any info will be much appreciated.

Comments: 51st Signal Battalion Reunion Asso. 4129 Fairway Dr. Granbury, TX 76049

Fellow Battalion member:

I am Tommy Thompson ( reunion co-ordinator) I live in Granbury, TX. My phone: (817) 326-4773 Fax: (817) 326-5990 Email: tom@itexas.net

I served with the 51st in Korea, 1952-53, R&M Co, Radio Platoon. I was a high speed radio operator. I started out working on a SCR-399 ( morse code operated ) and later we got ANGRC-26 ( radio teletype units). As most of us, I was on TDY away from our platoon most of the time, and from our Hq. in Uijongbu, South Korea. I spent most of my time out in the field up North, where it was colder that hell. I hope you faired better.

We have just concluded our 6th Reunion, in Dallas, TX, Sept. 9, 10 and 11, 2003. Our host was Rex Searson, Former CO, R&M Co., 1953-54. Our guest speaker was Col. Wiley Bell, former message cnt. CO, R&M Co., 1953-54.

Our next reunion will be Sept. 7, 8 and 9, 2004, in either Branson MO. or Nashville TN. ?? Our reunions will be opened to all members from 1916 to 2004. Our dues are $10.00 a year.

This money goes toward operating our Web Site www2.itexas.net/tom and putting out our news letters.

Sincerely yours,

Tommy Thompson

Did You Know SFC Arthur W. Oakes

Monty Oakes wrote on 2003-08-14 07:04:52.0

Comments: Did you know my Uncle, Arther W. Oakes, SFC, Co. B, 51st Signals BN, I Corps?

He earned the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in Korea March 15-April 15, 1950. Certificate was signed by : MG Bergin, ADJ GEN and Frank Pace Jr., SEC Army. Told me the 'Team' earned it, not him. He was only singled out to receive it. Uncle Art claimed the Japanese wiring from WWII was better than our own and he would just fix the old rather than replace it with the new. Said he was almost crushed by one of our tanks that slipped off the road into his cable ditch one day. Never talked about the snipers nor the Pusan perimeter breakout.

He also served with the 3115th Signals BN in the ETO, Belgian sector very near the Bulge, but said little about it. Am trying to get a unit history of the 3115th. Can you tell me how? Most resource histories start with a Division or Army and then list the units attached to them. Uncle Art was also attached to the ETO Communications Zone(?) and I only learned that because of a shoulder patch that he had in his collection. That's how I learned of the I Corps connection as well, because of the patch. Do you have a unit history of the 51st in Korea? What awards did the unit earn?

Thanx, Monty

Comments: I landed at Inchon on Thanksgiving Day 1958 and left Korea by airplace on Thanksgiving Day 1959. Served as clerk (Spc.E-4) in S2/3 in Hdqs. Company of 51st Signal Bn. Remember the walks across rice patties to Red Cloud? Debbie's Hideaway? Sign..."Here stands the only person in the 51st Signal Battalion who knows exactly what he is doing?" (wall of outdoor urinal) walks across the bridge to work? Col Rienzi and his swagger stick? Alerts out in the field in zero temperatures? Sgt. Aguilar throwing up on company runs? ICorps basketball team? Have some pictures and lots of memories. While there was commissioned to write a 51st Signal Bn history which was published. Anyone know where a copy might be? Went back about seven years ago...things drastically changed! Clindard's Corner, Red Cloud, Hq compound hardly recognizable. Nothing now but large metropolitan city.

Cold as hell coming up from Pusan.

Remember 1st Cav. Infantry there at Unijonbu when we arrived, many still in their foxholes. Took a while to find Company "B" there in the area. Had a hot meal I remember..we were all hungary.

Anyway..enough for now. Anyone out there when I was..with company "B"??

Comments: I was the A Co motor Sgt replacing SSG Loomis who rotated back to the world. Our shop was a maintenance tent that was hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. I remember the Miss America and court visiting our unit. I also remember the first female (WACS) arriving in country in '74.

Comments: I am trying to discover the world, life, and friends my father, Marcus L. Hammons, had and made during his time in Korea.51 Signal Corp Battalion -- Korea in the early 50's. If you served with him and could share some memories of your time with him, please let me know. During his life, he did not speak much about the war.

Need CCKW Sig Corps Photos

Brian Colburn wrote on 2001-03-09 15:14:50.0

Comments: Looking for photos of a GMC CCKW 2.5 ton 6x6 truck with the Signal Corps telephone repair body on it. This is a large sheet steel body that extends up to the height of a normal canvas top. The top is open with a retractable canvas cover. There is pole setting equipment and cable spooling equipment on board. The rear is open. It is definitely not one of the Chevy 1.5 ton 4x4 models.

These were used by the 51st Signal Battalion in Korea. My father took a photo of the rear of one during the war, marked I-51s B-52 meaning I-Corps, 51st Signal, Company B, truck 52.

I would like to build a model of one of these trucks, but need more photos, especially the sides and interior.

I would also like photos of any M37's used in the late stages of the Korean War.

My email is Dodge_M37@lycos.com
