Comments: Have a photo at the 326th CR adn one next to a Gruman Tigercat I had an exciting ride in to Wonson Harbor area to examine as a potential site for our operations in the future. Pilot has 100 missions, could have taken the milk run back to Itami AB, but instead decided to take an F4U or F4F and on take off a wing folded and he burned. It is my understanding that those of us from WWII adn Korea are departing the gene pool at about 11,000 p/day or was that month!! Hmmmmmmm! Don't make any long range plans anymore!

Understand we earned some medals during the Korean Police Action. Where do we write to obtain?

Some called me RIP, Some Bob, some Robert. Was promoted to 1st Lt. prior to assignment to 501st, but my discharge documents have 2nd Lt. on them, Have many sets of old orders with 1st Lt. on them. Wonder what happened? Visited the 40th Div, 223rd Inf Reg at near Kumwa where my bro-in-law was Gen Huddleson's aide, spent some time on Hill 229 testing some low level gear with enlisted man friend Robert Chase. Lost his address. He was assigned the 326th CRC. Visited all ASA units in Korea prior to assignment under ASAPAC orders to take a group from DC to visit our facilities in Frozen Chosen (and it was). Coldest winter in 87 years they told us. Live on the South Lake of the Silver Lakes on the High Desert near Helendale, California at approx 2,540 ft elevation. UNKOWN ARMY SIGNAL UNIT

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Bob Furrer wrote on 2004-11-27 15:05:08.0

Comments: In May/June 1955, 2ndRRSq/5th Comm Gp (HQ @ K-55 Osan-ni, now Osan AB)/5th AF, turned over Highpoint(call-sign-Paris Site) VHF/FM Relay Site to an Army unit. I @ that time was OIC Flt. "C" on Highpoint. Highpoint is located +/- 8 mi south of Chonan, about 3 mi east of MSR-1, above Mokchon Village.

For purposes of 2ndRRSq HISTORY, am trying to determine Army signal unit tha received this and other 2ndRRSq sites.

Contacted 2nd Lt Becker, Ops Off, 501st Signal Co., HQ'd @ Pyongtaek, Korea, who indicates 501st still operates Highpoint relay and Bucket (Bucket Alpha call-sign for 2ndRRSq WASHINGTON Site) Site on Hill 170, Osan AB. However, 501st was not activated until 1970.

Contacted LTC Boylan, Chief Public Affairs, 8th Army Korea. Oldest record he could locate for Highpoint was a 1970 Station List. It listed grid coordinates, noted Helipad #508 was on the same hill and Remarks Col. indicated STRATCOM Site #1447. He indicated most records and documents prior to 1970 were retired to the US a long time ago.

Can anyone provide the unit designation I am looking for?

Comments: I am a veteran of the Korean War (Sgt.; ASA; “Iron Triangle”; June 52-June 53). I am collecting information on the psychological factors that aided or impeded the POW’s ability to resist complying with the demands of their captors in the face of mind-numbing brutality and the constant treat of death. I am particularly interested in two characteristics that may have played such a role in dealing with the extremely harsh treatment they received. I would appreciate receiving any references or information relating to the role that HUMOR and/or RELIGION might have played in the POW’s resisting the demands of their captors. Thank you.

Also large data base of persons we are looking for. For thos non-ASA persons out there we were in support of every single unit during the Korean Wat in one form or another in the gathering of Signals Intelligence. We had numerous low level voice and electronic interecept sites, along with an equal number of Radio Direction Finding sites assigned most often to forward artillery unit areas. All of the above has been fairly well declassified and we can now tell our children (grand children actually at this late stage) when we are asked, "What did you do during the War Daddy?". I am interested in contacting mainly any ASA persons out there and it would be unique to speak with an of the members of units we supported.

Some men were actually aircraft mechanics while others had various other covert assignments. I was TDY to various Army and Air Force bases during my tour. Particularly looking for Raymond Box from Mass. or Bobby Hill from N.C. Also Dick Katakami from Hawaii, who was with KMAG and was the crew chief on "Siggy's L-23. Comments: My name is SPC Harris. I'm looking for information on my grandfather's service history in the Korean War. It is rather important to me to know how my grandfather contributed to the safety of the nation. Especially since I've carried on in the Army mainly because of the influence that he had on me.

Any help would be much appreciated

Comments: History: Constituted on 13 October 1950 in the Regular Army as HHC, 501st Communication Reconnaissance Group, the unit was activated on 20 October 1950 at Camp Pickett, Virginia, and assigned to the Army Security Agency. On 29 May 1951, the 501st Transferred from Camp Pickett to Camp Stoneman, California for staging to Pusan, Korea.

The 501st arrived at Pusan on 25 June 1951. The unit spent four days in the Pusan assembly area awaiting sea transportation to Inchon. The 501st arrived at Inchon on 1 July 1951. The Group Headquarters moved into the war damaged main building of the Kyonggi Middle School, Seoul, Korea. By 15 July, the 501st had assumed administrative and operational control of all ASA units in Korea.

The 501st Communications Reconnaissance Group represented a first of its kind and a milestone in intelligence support to U.S. tactical forces. The Korean War presented ASA with an opportunity to test its newly formed doctrine in support of a field Army. ASA activated the 501st to direct operations of ASA support units in the Korean Theater, coordinating all ASA activities at each of the lower echelons.

By the end of hostilities in July 1953, the Group had three battalions and five companies assigned. Besides the numerous citations awarded to its subordinate units, the Group received the Meritorious Unit Commendation (1 July 1951 to 27 July 1953), the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation (15 July 1951 to 30 April 1953) and credit for participation in six campaigns.

On 28 January 1956, the 501st Communications Reconnaissance group was redesignated at HHC, 501st Army Security Group. On 1 July 1956, the 501st ASA group was inactivated and its personnel and mission transferred to the 508th USASA Group, a TDA organization, as part of a worldwide reorganization occurring within the Army Security Agency to provide greater flexibility in support to tactical units.

Comments: Served in Hq Co 501st Comm Recon Gp (Seoul) from June 1951 until August 1952. We lost an officer (I think his name was Lt Sam Elliot) to sniper fire near Pusan in June and I think a Pfc Jerry Sherwood right after we got to Seoul. I don't see them in your casualty list. Bill

It was an Army Security Agency Company. That might be why it wasn't listed.
