49TH FA BN |
| TIM SPYERS wrote on July 14, 2011 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Looking for any information about my father or his unit. He told me when I was younger that he went to Korea at the outset, spent time in Pusan Harbor training, was assigned to a Regimental Combat Team, spent a number of weeks surrounded by the enemy in the winter and had supplies air dropped in and ended up at the Yalu river. His DD214 states he was with the 49th FA BN "C" Btry as a Cheif Artillery Survey Specialist. He received the Korean Service Medal with Silver Star. Was promoted to SGT in Aug 1950 and SFC in June 1951. He entered the Army in 1948 and served in Korea from June 1950 to October 1951, as far as I can tell. He mentioned some things about being cutoff and surrounded for a number of weeks during the winter; and being part of a Regimental Combat Team; I think RCT 31. The problem is that as far as I can tell the 49th FA BN was not part of RCT 31 and may or may not have been involved in the Battle of Chosin Resevoir. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
