Comments: My uncles: Warren (Bart) Bartlow, E.Duane Bartlow, E. Wayne Bartlow, & Rex Bartlow served with the 45th from 1950-1952 with the 45th Signal Co. They served as cooks and Bart drove a truck part of the time. I'm writing on their behalf as I'm not sure they're aware of this site. Listed with them are buddies who are in pictures I have of them. The four brothers are still alive and doing well and are my heroes.

Comments: I crossed on the General Hugh Gaffey in Feb 1953 arrived at Camp Drake and after 6 weeks training at Eta Jima arrived in Korea. I was posted to the 45th Signal Company. The regiments were fighting in the Old Baldy & Punch Bowl areas and one regiment was guarding prisoners at Ko Je Do. Six months after the cease fire the Division was returned to the states and was I reasigned to the 44th ECB (Engineer Battalion) as Supply Sergent until July 1954 when I was returned to the U.S. Would love to hear from some of my old buddies from the motor pool.

Comments: Anyone remember crossing the bridge at the river, at the end of Hog Back Ridge, where many of our men from the 45th Div. drowned when the rushing water washed the bridge out? The rest of the men were hauled out by helicopter , by order of CPL. Hill, who stopped the remaining men from death. This happened at Bridge 29 in Korea. Anyone remember this incident?

for EH Turner - re: Thomas C. Ford |

 |
Timothy Ford wrote on 2004-04-19 10:47:13.0
Comments: Mr. Turner, Regarding your posting, "More Roster insertions" on 23 Jul 1998 on koreanwar.org: My father was Thomas C. Ford, ser #NG25687130. He died June 24, 1989, and is buried in Houston National Cemetery. I treasure my memories of the few war stories he told his children. In general, no matter how cold it was, he would say it was nothing compared to winter in Korea. And he threw in an occasional Japanese expression into conversations. When I was about 9 or 10, he explained to me that his job was to take aerial photos from a recon plane, then develop the film and print the photos. At the time, I found it hard to believe the aircraft was unarmed and was impressed at how Dad just smiled and shrugged it off. He also told a few stories of camp life, how he and his buddies had a Korean "houseboy" do chores and mix drinks. He showed me photos of his buddies, then pointed out the actor who played "Hoss" on Bonanza in another photo, explaining that he wasn't in the same unit but in the area. When he came to the nude portrait of an attractive Korean woman, he did some quick talking, something about "and we also engaged in some occasional art photography just to sharpen our skills." That was probably the first time I realized my Dad had a life before "family life," and how little I really knew about him. I do know Tom Ford was a man driven to high achievement. At about age 12, he slept-walked out of a second story window and broke his back and neck. He overcame much to recover, but the accident stunted his growth. (I'm 6-foot, and his twin sister was nearly that tall.) He seemed to have lived his life proving that he was "bigger" than his physical height. He reached Eagle Scout rank, trained Eagle Scouts and led scouts on mountain lion hunts out west. He became a public relations executive for Monsanto, then went into teaching at the university level. Strokes and a wasting-away disorder that was never specifically diagnosed cut short his PhD pursuit a few years before he died. Tom Ford always seemed to make a strong impression on those around him. If you knew him, I would be honored to add your recollections to my family history. Thanks, -- Tim Ford
