Trying to determine where he was in Korea as he cannot explain to me how he was promoted from a private to a sergeant in such short order. He has claims to not be in much combat. He claims it was due to his typing skills. He now has Alzeimers and it is difficult to communicate with him.

Comments: I am trying again on this site. I had incorrectly cited the 179th as my father's (Hoyt Cocke's) regiment. It turns out that the 279th was the correct unit. I am trying to find any information about his service and that of the 279th during the Korean War. If anyone knew my father or can give me information, anecdotes, recollections or documentation I would be forever grateful. My father passed away in 2001. He was wounded on June 22, 1952. He always spoke with a great deal of pride about the Thunderbirds and their service in Korea. God bless you all!

Comments: Bruce Lackey (Now 81yr)trained in Camp Polk, LA. He lost a tooth during training camp, but details unknown. In his company F, Bruce was known as Abe because of his resemblance to Abe Lincoln.

Bruce left for Korea March of 1951. The 279 infantry first went to the northern mountains of Japan for extensive training for 6 plus months, then on to Korea. The stories known to us are that his battalions were there for relief efforts & hit the front lines immediately, taking large causalities. Only 1-3 solders survived the early onslaught. No one else from the High Point local NC area survived. Bruce remained on front line combat from Korea Fall/Winter 1951 thru Early Winter 1952. He left Korea October 1952. Some 40-50 yrs later, Bruce received a letter from an old war buddy ????? thanking my father, Bruce for staying with him while he was injured & taking fire. Bruce stayed & ensured the safety of this soldier, while under fire waiting for the medic chopper.

My dad suffers from Alzheimers. Would love to hear any related stories or connect with any old buddies.

Comments: Spent almost 6 months in Hokido training -then to Korea to replace the 1st Cav. Moved to the MLR on Christmas day in the snow. My platoon later brought in the first Chinese while on patrol -Sgt Rex terminated them so the general didn't get to question them. Someone cut the ears off several of the dead. Spent 41 days on the line before we got to get hot showers. I had a good group of men and I wonder where they all ended up in life. My first platoon Sgt Robert Pierce came to Corpus Christi a year or two ago to Bird Watch and called me so we had breakfast and a visit. My next platoon Sgt Leroy K Olson was also a fine soldier and Ive not heard from him since '52 when I was evacuated due to wounds. Our company came from Enid Oklahoma. I was assigned from a pool of officers who graduated fromTexas A$M University in June 1950 (when the war started) A month after I left the regiment was in a fierce fight on T-bone hill and many WIA and KIA. I would like to know how my men came through that. The only ones I've talked to were National Guardsmen and they were phased out just before the battle. If anyone knows somthing about that I'd appreciate hearing. Ive been to two reunions and those were great- I'm getting a little old to be going (81). The 45th is a great Division.

If you remember my father and the emails you sent me, please email me again. I have been trying to get information on soliders who have served with my father. I would greatly appreciate any pictures. Also if anyone remembers my father as well that would be great too! He doesn't talk about the Korean War much as he still has nightmares till today, so I understand why a lot of soldiers don't want to talk about it. I am very proud of my father as well as everyone else out there who serves their country. My father would proudly do it again. I just found out that many soldiers who served at that time did not receive at least two to three medals as well as commemorative medals that were later added after the Korean War. Please Contact the National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Ave, St. Louis, MO 63132 or go online and google these medals as well as Certificates that you may also be entitled to. Thanks!

Unfortunately, he was not married not did he have any children. Records state that he was born in 1930 which made him 23 at time of death but my aunt swears he was 16 years old at time of death. Supposedly, he easily forged his date of birth to serve his country which was seemingly easy to do during those times and especially for a negro. I hope he received the right recognition.

Comments: My father Dave R. Arnold served with M Co 279th during Jan 51-Apr52 in Korea. He was an infantryman with an mos of hvy weapons mortorman. He is seeking assistance from fellow soldiers that served during this time and place for confirmation of cold weather injuries(frostbite)for VA disablities.all records of the VA for this period were burned in a fire a few years ago. Due to this only eye witness accounts have much of a chance to help veterans establish that they were in dire circumstances during these trying times. anyonw willing to help, we will send a letter to you with the required info and selfstamped return envelope We in return will assist you if you need confirmation with your medical disabilities turned down by the VA with the cold weather injuries. I am his eldest son, retired master sgt, Vietnam and Gulf war veteran so I know how it feels to be told that your service was not worth your countries time & money. Thank you for your past service in keeping us free here in the USA.

Both are passed away. 2 of their good friends were "Happy Jack" Freeman of Arkadelphia, Arkansas and Scotty Harjo of Lawrence, Kansas. Both of these fine men are passed away also. I believe that Scotty was originally from Oklahoma. If anyone remembers them, I would be interested in hearing from them. Thank you.

Comments: My father, Carroll F. Cox, was a corporal and a radio man for this unit in the 45th Infantry Division in Korea. I am looking for any information regarding the posts in Korea, battles, unit commanders, with dates and places. I know his C.O. was O.T. Autry, and his buddies names are A.P. Tindall, (not sure of the spelling), Gene Smith, and Ivan Kutz. My father has since passed away, and I am not sure if any of these guys are still around but any information would be helpful. Anyone who may have known my dad would be welcome to respond. I am attempting to create a family history with this information for my kids and it would be great to hear from some of his old friends.

I am also a veteran of the Vietnam conflict and this project is my way of paying tribute to my dad and his comrades in arms.

Steve Cox

I Remember being visited each summer by Chaplin Father Curtis who served with them in Korea and just died a couple years ago at a rest home in Ohio. My Father has hundreds of photos taken while in training and in Korea, many taken in front of their foxholes on Pork Chop Hill, Heartbreak Ridge, Mortar Hill, ect...

My Fathers nickname was "One shot"

At a family reunion receintly, some of the photos were identified. One of the photos with a friend, who was from Chicago. I was told about how he was always showing photo's of his infant son and wife and talking about them. He was killed on the night of their first engagement in Korea.

My father has his company basic training graduation photo on display at the VFW in Seneca, KS

Darreld is a wonderful man that came home and raised a wonderful family. He has numerous sons and grandchildren that have also served in the military or are currentley serving.

Darrelds story is part of a new book that was just published and can be found at http://myspecialinterests.net/book/heroes.htm or by emailing me at sportela@d59.k12.id.us

The book is titled "Heroes Among Us, Reflections from Pearl Harbor to the streets of Baghdad." The book is a historical and patriotic look at the lives of American Veterans from WWII through the current war in Iraq.

I am a school teacher and have had many of these veterans in my class as guest speakers. They have all made a dramatic impact upon my students.

Thanks to all of our veterans,

Sincerely, Stewart Portela

Comments: Fellow Riflemen of the 45th Infantry Division: You and I paid too high a price to allow our government to run rough-shod over us, our children, and our grandchildren, but as with all of you, I thought for some time there was little additional I could do. I was wrong. By age, education and background, I can be Governor of the State of West Virginia. When I am elected I will serve as Governor of the State of West Virginia in an honorable manner. I will serve as you and I served long ago: with dignity, honor and integrity - at which point the corruption will end. I need with your help to achieve this goal. A very strong, militant Mafia-type political structure exists in West Virginia. It has been that way for decades. It is a difficult nut to crack. I need your help to crack it. I need help in gathering over 15,000 signed petition forms. Will you help? You and I can change the corrupt government of West Virginia, thereby benefiting every citizen in the State, their children and grandchildren. As with many of you, I had to leave West Virginia just to get a job, get some training, get something other than Wheeling Bill Lias' Mafia activities. THE GOVERNMENT OF THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA SHOULD COYNE OPERATED. Please visit my web site: www.coyne-assoc.com. Please contace me with your offer to help. I can do this job easily, but I cannot do it alone. We stood together 50+ years ago for a reason, for a cause. Please stand with me now! With your help we can and will win this fight. Thank you, Cpl. Thomas J. Coyne Jr., 24 13-th Street, Wheeling, West Virginia 26003 (US52221059).

I will get more info from him and post updates. Thank you very much for the sacrifices all the vets have given over the years. What about Melvin Jones (the company Baker - from Detroit, and a Golden Gloves heavyweight champion boxer two years in a row)? Ralph Tancreddi (the company mailman)?

Comments: I don't really know anything about my father's time in Korea. I want to know more or learn more about it. He never talked to me about it and died when I was a freshman in high school in 1998. I am now looking for someone who knew him. I do not know years he served or where. His name is Richard Gainor and at the time he was either from Rhode Island or Massachusetts. All I remember are references to the thunderbirds and him talking about the cold which makes me think he served in one of the winters. Any recollection would be appreciated.

Looking For Anyone Knowing Craig M. Brown Served Korean War

Mitchell Brown wrote on 2003-12-09 16:15:10.0

Comments: Hi, I'm looking for anyone who may have known a Craig M. Brown from Ft.Thomas, KY. He fought in Korea sometime beteween 1951&53. I know he knew a guy named Roger Gormley I think and a Korean named or nicknamed Skoshi.

He died Jan. 1st 2000. At least he got to see his grandson and the new millenium. He never talked much about it but I was, and still am fascinated by his service.

I think I remember him saying something about Christmas Hill. He was wounded once in the hand. I think he also went to OTS. He made it to Sgt. but a "weasley"(his words),Lt. or Capt. was asking for a punch in the mouth afer much time fighting at the front. He obliged, and left proudly as he entered, a Private FIRST CLASS. If anyone knows Craig M. Brown and has any stories I'd love to hear them and relay them to the grandson he'll never know.

Thanks, Mitchell Brown

I didn't know him before I was born. But I know the war changed him. War changes people. When one is changed, all persons that they touch are also changed. WAR touched me without me ever being close to it.

My father is Victor Macuga. Any information about him and his experiences would be very well welcomed.

Carol Westmoreland wrote on 2001-11-15 18:30:38.0

Comments: My father recently died at age 67 of cancer. For the first time at age 41, I saw his uniforn and medals.

My sisters and I (Donna, Carol(self), and Lisa) are interested in finding more about my father's involvement. Our father was a very patriotic man but did not speak of the Korean War.

We would like maybe stories, photos, conversations with those whom served with him, to put into our memories and pass them onto his grandchildren(MaryElizabeth Fogarty and T.J Quesenberry). Our father lives in our hearts but we seek this information to further honor him.

FULL NAME :HERMAN CULLOM WESTMORELAND "WES". AGE PROBABLY 16 0R 17. Black hair, thin at the time, brown eyes, moderately tall, crooked teeth, Causian- Would have spoken with a Southern Accent since born in Celina, TN. Maybe he spoke of the Dale Hollow Lake being nearby; he loved Dale Hollow Lake. Mother states he recieved some medal for marksman (shooting). Father Relocated to Thomaston GA, Upson County and married wife (Micki Washam)January 14 1956 or 1957. I know he was transferred after the Korean War, from Ft Benning, GA in 1960 to El Paso, TX until circa 1965. He leaves behind my mother and,(former wife) Micki Washam (Maiden name),and three daughters: Donna G. Westmoreland Fogarty, Carol F. Westmoreland Pounds,Lisa K. Westmoreland Quesenberry and grandchildren:MaryElizabeth Fogarty and T.J. (Anthony Lyle) Quesenberry. First child, son, Robert Cullom Westmoreland (infant son, deceased).

Also his mother, Mrs. Leitha Westmoreland of Celina TN, and his brothers/one sister: Bennie Westmoreland, David Westmoreland, Hubert (Bulldog) Westmoreland, Jimmy Westmoreland, Roy Westmoreland, and sister Marie Westmoreland Walls. Perhaps he mentioned my mothers's name along with the names of his brothers and one sister. Father buried at Upson Memorial Gardens, Thomaston GA on October 22, 2001. DOD:October 20, 2001.

Keywords: Herman Cullom Westmoreland , Nickname "Wes" Army 45th Infantry Division, Training in Colorado?? Age probably 19 or 20??? Wife's name at time, Micki Washam whom he met in Thomaston,GA. and wmarried January 14th 1956 or 1957 Believe he enlisted from state of Thomaston, GA, Upson County or either from his birthplace of Celina, TN, close to Dale Hollow Lake.

Taken from a document for the Award of The Silver Star.

Sergeant First Class John W. Carlson, RA12249442, Infantry, United States Army, distinguished himself by gallantry in action against an armed enemy near Pau-gol, Korea. During the early hours of 18 July 1953, an intense enemy mortar and artillery barrage shelled the area of a heavy mortar company in conjuction with a gigantic attack against Allied positions, etc.

In anyone is interested in the rest of the letter I will continue--just email me.

I believe he was with the Natl Guard to meet and join with 45th of Oklahoma. I do not completely understand. He was at T bone hill, sand?, Christmas hill and has mentioned more. He was shot in the leg during that time also. After the war he went germany, I do not have any info on his time there. He is also looking for a buddy that he has lost contac with. Bill or Margaret Higginbotham. I believe Bill is originally from Texas and Margaret from Germany. If anyone has any info I would appreciat it greatly. Tammy

Looking for anyone who knew my dearest loving father, SSG Michael L. Keehan Jr

MICHAEL KEEHAN wrote on 2000-09-07 13:06:26.0

Comments: My father, SSG Michael L. Keehan, was a medic with the 45 th Infantry Division, not sure od the exact dates he was there, he didn't say much about it during my child hood and hid it well as I grew up and entered the service myself. He told less and less of his history and as I was stationed in S. Korea myself, he seemed distrought of this, telling me, warning me only to "Stay South, as far as you can" This was in 97, and as I was painfully and rudely awakened one morning while sleping ina tent, freezing my ass off, during an exercise near the DMZ, i was awoken by a dreadful dream, one that woke me so violently at 3 am. It was a dream of trouble, a feeling I could not dismiss, never. I was accompanied by my troop, who was aware of my pain, he asked if everything was O.K. I assured him, "It was only a bad dream", but I've never had onr that had awakened me so. Two days later, after going back to Pyongyang with my unit to serve the rest of our mission, a call came to me from my brother david, telling me that father was gone, taking his own life. !!!! Christ all mighty, he was VFW white Cap of Wisconsin, i could do nothing, but weep, weep as I did, for a ll the things that he did and the great person he was. I want to know, from anyone who knew him, anyone, who he was, what he meant to you. I know in my heart and in my dreams that he is my Hero, along with all of you, my brothers and sisters who fight for our country. I am so overwhelmed with grief and happiness at the same time. i remember recently talking with my older brother David, who served in the Air force as well as the Army, how he remembered Dad getting in his unifrom, from Korea, because it still fit him and asking us kids, "Well, what do you think? with such pride he wore it, and i honor him, along with my brother's and sisiter's. We love him and wish he was back to tossle our hair and take HIM fishing at johnsosn's river of Marabel Caves. Dada I love you, always will. I was there in the Chorwon Valley, as you were. You are always MY HERO, Love your son Mikey

Comments: My father, Hoyt Cocke served with the 45th inf division in korea .. he was a corporal and BAR man. I am interested in learning about engagements his unit was involved in, particulary june 22 , 52 and his activities of that day(he was wounded by a chicom grenade). He currently is suffering from the effects of emphysema and is in ill health. I would like to learn more about his service while i can still discuss these things with him. He has recently started to talk about his service more. I am very proud of him, and all veterans, and would ask that anyone who served with him or has info about his unit to contact me at cocke@digdat.com

Comments: My dad does not say much about Korea. He has only ever mentioned Old Baldy once or twice. If any one knows anything about his service in Korea I would love to know. I am very proud of him and all the men and women who served. I am a teacher and do all I can to let people know about the US involvement in Korea and why it was so important. Thank you!
