My duties while in Korea was the collection and transmission of cryptographic messages. As one can well imageine, that was some fifty-five years ago. I do remember the first name of the EM who was jeep driver, driving a Colonel, his first name was Andy. There was also an Officer that I remember, Major Raymont T. Smith.

Any info would be appreciated.

Comments: Both my Father, Aloysius Haverkamp and Uncle, Norbert Haverkamp served together in 180th, C company. Both are living in Northeastern Kansas. I Remember being visited each summer by Chaplin Father Curtis who served with them in Korea and just died a couple years ago at a rest home in Ohio. My Father has hundreds of photos taken while in training and in Korea, many taken in front of their foxholes on Pork Chop Hill, Heartbreak Ridge, Mortar Hill, ect...

My Fathers nickname was "One shot"

At a family reunion receintly, some of the photos were identified. One of the photos with a friend, who was from Chicago. I was told about how he was always showing photo's of his infant son and wife and talking about them. He was killed on the night of their first engagement in Korea.

My father has his company basic training graduation photo on display at the VFW in Seneca, KS

Comments: Seeking any info on my Dad.Who passed away in 1995 of cancer. Dad never talked about Korea unless it was something funny or interesting. Two months before he passed away i learned that he had been awarded the "Bronze Star". I have a photo of him and what appears to be a "unit" picture. That I would be willing to share with someone.Dad spoke of A scar he had on his chin that he got during a battle where he said his unit got "overran" and that he was one of 10, Left alive out of 60 men. Words can not expess how much i loved my father or how proud i am of him and his service to this GREAT NATION. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him or my Mom.

Comments: Mr. Darreld Walton, of Blackfoot, Idaho, was a member of the Thunderbird Division and served in Korea in 1951-1952. He was wounded in action, received the Purple Heart along with other commendations, and also suffered from Hemorraghic Fever.

Darreld is a wonderful man that came home and raised a wonderful family. He has numerous sons and grandchildren that have also served in the military or are currentley serving.

Darrelds story is part of a new book that was just published and can be found at http://myspecialinterests.net/book/heroes.htm or by emailing me at sportela@d59.k12.id.us

The book is titled "Heroes Among Us, Reflections from Pearl Harbor to the streets of Baghdad." The book is a historical and patriotic look at the lives of American Veterans from WWII through the current war in Iraq.

I am a school teacher and have had many of these veterans in my class as guest speakers. They have all made a dramatic impact upon my students.

Thanks to all of our veterans,

Sincerely, Stewart Portela

Staff Ride - Naktong Bulge

Date: Thu, 30 Nov 1995
 mbinder@emh5.korea.army.mil
Subject: Korean War Research

My name is CPT Binder. I am in the United States Army stationd in Taegu,
Korea with the 19th TAACOM. I just have some information to give you as
well as some questions. First the info: my father , COL (ret)John J. Binder
was with the 45th ID in the Korean War. He currently teaches military
history at Kent State University. His expertise is in the Korean War.
As a side note, I was at Fort Lee, Virginia when I heard of the memorial
dedication. I went up for the dedication and was moved not only by the
memorial, but by the vets I came into contact with. So, after driving
for 3 hours back to fort Lee, I called my Dad and told him he still had
time to go. He asked a friend at work for advice. Ray Flynn, a VietNam
vet told him "You have to go, if not for yourself, do it for the guys
that never made it back." So he rode on the train for 20 hours round
trip to be at the dedication. I'll never forget that visit.

Anyway, I would like to offer some help. My Dad's assistance is
available for any research, etc. I'm getting him on E-mail soon. I work
with a major who has up to 150 color photographs from his grandfather.

They cover areas from Pusan to the Hwachon Reservoir.

Now for the help needed. I am doing a staff ride on the first
battle of the Naktong River Bulge. I am looking for any vets involved in
that battle, especially ones that are in the ROK. Any other lead on
texts, videos, etc. would be highly appreciated.

A word of thanks to all the vets that are helping us to "carry the
torch" of the forgetten war.
