Carol Westmoreland wrote on 2001-11-15 18:30:38.0

Comments: My father recently died at age 67 of cancer. For the first time at age 41, I saw his uniforn and medals.

My sisters and I (Donna, Carol(self), and Lisa) are interested in finding more about my father's involvement. Our father was a very patriotic man but did not speak of the Korean War.

We would like maybe stories, photos, conversations with those whom served with him, to put into our memories and pass them onto his grandchildren(MaryElizabeth Fogarty and T.J Quesenberry). Our father lives in our hearts but we seek this information to further honor him.

FULL NAME :HERMAN CULLOM WESTMORELAND "WES". AGE PROBABLY 16 0R 17. Black hair, thin at the time, brown eyes, moderately tall, crooked teeth, Causian- Would have spoken with a Southern Accent since born in Celina, TN. Maybe he spoke of the Dale Hollow Lake being nearby; he loved Dale Hollow Lake. Mother states he recieved some medal for marksman (shooting). Father Relocated to Thomaston GA, Upson County and married wife (Micki Washam)January 14 1956 or 1957. I know he was transferred after the Korean War, from Ft Benning, GA in 1960 to El Paso, TX until circa 1965. He leaves behind my mother and,(former wife) Micki Washam (Maiden name),and three daughters: Donna G. Westmoreland Fogarty, Carol F. Westmoreland Pounds,Lisa K. Westmoreland Quesenberry and grandchildren:MaryElizabeth Fogarty and T.J. (Anthony Lyle) Quesenberry. First child, son, Robert Cullom Westmoreland (infant son, deceased).

Also his mother, Mrs. Leitha Westmoreland of Celina TN, and his brothers/one sister: Bennie Westmoreland, David Westmoreland, Hubert (Bulldog) Westmoreland, Jimmy Westmoreland, Roy Westmoreland, and sister Marie Westmoreland Walls. Perhaps he mentioned my mothers's name along with the names of his brothers and one sister. Father buried at Upson Memorial Gardens, Thomaston GA on October 22, 2001. DOD:October 20, 2001.

Keywords: Herman Cullom Westmoreland , Nickname "Wes" Army 45th Infantry Division, Training in Colorado?? Age probably 19 or 20??? My father was a Captian in the 45th Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict,(Cpt. Jack E Powell)Because his unit was activated he never even got to see his firstborn until she was ONE! He and I have never really talked about the war but he knows I love him without him and all our servicemen there would not be a United States of America!May God bless and keep us all safe in these tragic times. . .

Comments: My father, John W. Carlson, passed away in November of 1989. He never spoke much of the war, which leaves me with many questions. I am the youngest of three sons and would very much like to correspond with anyone who knew my father and especially about the following:

Taken from a document for the Award of The Silver Star.

Sergeant First Class John W. Carlson, RA12249442, Infantry, United States Army, distinguished himself by gallantry in action against an armed enemy near Pau-gol, Korea. During the early hours of 18 July 1953, an intense enemy mortar and artillery barrage shelled the area of a heavy mortar company in conjuction with a gigantic attack against Allied positions, etc.

In anyone is interested in the rest of the letter I will continue--just email me.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for anyone who knew my dearest loving father, SSG Michael L. Keehan Jr

MICHAEL KEEHAN wrote on 2000-09-07 13:06:26.0

Comments: My father, SSG Michael L. Keehan, was a medic with the 45 th Infantry Division, not sure od the exact dates he was there, he didn't say much about it during my child hood and hid it well as I grew up and entered the service myself. He told less and less of his history and as I was stationed in S. Korea myself, he seemed distrought of this, telling me, warning me only to "Stay South, as far as you can" This was in 97, and as I was painfully and rudely awakened one morning while sleping ina tent, freezing my ass off, during an exercise near the DMZ, i was awoken by a dreadful dream, one that woke me so violently at 3 am. It was a dream of trouble, a feeling I could not dismiss, never. I was accompanied by my troop, who was aware of my pain, he asked if everything was O.K. I assured him, "It was only a bad dream", but I've never had onr that had awakened me so. Two days later, after going back to Pyongyang with my unit to serve the rest of our mission, a call came to me from my brother david, telling me that father was gone, taking his own life. !!!! Christ all mighty, he was VFW white Cap of Wisconsin, i could do nothing, but weep, weep as I did, for a ll the things that he did and the great person he was. I want to know, from anyone who knew him, anyone, who he was, what he meant to you. I know in my heart and in my dreams that he is my Hero, along with all of you, my brothers and sisters who fight for our country. I am so overwhelmed with grief and happiness at the same time. i remember recently talking with my older brother David, who served in the Air force as well as the Army, how he remembered Dad getting in his unifrom, from Korea, because it still fit him and asking us kids, "Well, what do you think? with such pride he wore it, and i honor him, along with my brother's and sisiter's. We love him and wish he was back to tossle our hair and take HIM fishing at johnsosn's river of Marabel Caves. Dada I love you, always will. I was there in the Chorwon Valley, as you were. You are always MY HERO, Love your son Mikey

Comments: My father, Hoyt Cocke served with the 45th inf division in korea .. he was a corporal and BAR man. I am interested in learning about engagements his unit was involved in, particulary june 22 , 52 and his activities of that day(he was wounded by a chicom grenade). He currently is suffering from the effects of emphysema and is in ill health. I would like to learn more about his service while i can still discuss these things with him. He has recently started to talk about his service more. I am very proud of him, and all veterans, and would ask that anyone who served with him or has info about his unit to contact me at cocke@digdat.com

Staff Ride - Naktong Bulge

Date: Thu, 30 Nov 1995
 mbinder@emh5.korea.army.mil
Subject: Korean War Research

My name is CPT Binder. I am in the United States Army stationd in Taegu,
Korea with the 19th TAACOM. I just have some information to give you as
well as some questions. First the info: my father , COL (ret)John J. Binder
was with the 45th ID in the Korean War. He currently teaches military
history at Kent State University. His expertise is in the Korean War.
As a side note, I was at Fort Lee, Virginia when I heard of the memorial
dedication. I went up for the dedication and was moved not only by the
memorial, but by the vets I came into contact with. So, after driving
for 3 hours back to fort Lee, I called my Dad and told him he still had
time to go. He asked a friend at work for advice. Ray Flynn, a VietNam
vet told him "You have to go, if not for yourself, do it for the guys
that never made it back." So he rode on the train for 20 hours round
trip to be at the dedication. I'll never forget that visit.

Anyway, I would like to offer some help. My Dad's assistance is
available for any research, etc. I'm getting him on E-mail soon. I work
with a major who has up to 150 color photographs from his grandfather.

They cover areas from Pusan to the Hwachon Reservoir.

Now for the help needed. I am doing a staff ride on the first
battle of the Naktong River Bulge. I am looking for any vets involved in
that battle, especially ones that are in the ROK. Any other lead on
texts, videos, etc. would be highly appreciated.

A word of thanks to all the vets that are helping us to "carry the
torch" of the forgetten war.
