Comments: I was there for 6 months in the last part of 1957. Great experience, lots of surgery, and fond memories.Probably many have passed on. The F-86s used to wave to us as they passed over on alerts. A character building block for sure.

Comments: i lost my yearbook. it had a red hard cover. please, if anyone still has theirs, scan the pages and attach them as jpegs. plus, i still have a gold-trimmed glass boot with the 8th army insignia and the words SUPPORT COMMAND and 44TH SHMA. i am eternally proud of my dedicated and devoted service for ten months with the unit at camp rodstrom, in 1968. we were the best outfit in korea. i'll always fondly remember the KATUSA soldiers, and the infiltrator lights-out alerts and the the shot gun-armed gate guards, and the kimche cabs, and the kimche. eric prisant bet a korean asistant cook he couldn't gulp down a bottle of tobasco sauce. the cook gulped it dry, and grinned, "gimme ten bucks," and didn't even shed a tear or scramble for a glass of water! major story always had an inch or two-inch long cigar butt in the corner of his mouth. we had the worst winter in 16 years, and i almost got frost bite toes, standing in a foxhoole, even with insulated socks and mickey mouse boots. maj. story would wryly tell new doctors and nurses sitting white-knuckled apprehensively in the back seat of my m151a1, that "if al misses any potholes on the way to the msr, he'll hit 'em on the way back, won't you all?" i'd grin, and sharply reply, "yes sir, major." take me back, warrior brothers and sisters. i ain't cut out for civilian life. god bleses us all. allen luther penny jr.0436 hrs., 25 may 04. :-)(-:
Keywords: i was just called "penny." maj. story was co. eric prisant was friend the officers' club cook, first sergeant borley was our top sergeant. capt. wedvik was chief pharmacy, bob merritt was mail clerk, close town was yonjeko, with the "turkey farm." vince campbell was great friend in 3/4 ton, then 5/4 ton ambulance platoon. quanset huts, many infiltrator alerts, pork chop hill just north of us. saw freedom bridge once. 1st lt. buss was buxom blonde female nurse. spec/4 paul penny was assigned motor pool. spec/4 stankovitz from seattle was great pal. one night in the pouring rain, i drove abrigadier general 30 miles over muddy mountain roads to 43th shma, and i had taken lsd earlier. i got the 5,000 mile safe driving award added to my 201 file. a lid (ounce of reefer)wrapped in korean newspaper was $2 at the seoul washington laundry and dry cleaner store. the first shirt would let me have my jeep, surg 2, on the weekends, and i would shuck my fatigues and be wearing my civies under them, while driving through the insane traffic of seoul as i was removing my fatiques. i didn't even have to stop! we supported 2nd infantry division. f86s flew over all the time on patrol, and we had frequent bell bubble canopy dustoffs bringing in wounded from the dmz.

Comments: My name is Kelley and I am a senior in high school in New Hampshire. I have to write a 20 page report on whatever topic I choose for my english class (it's a requirement for graduating) and my topic is the medical advances made from the Korean War and the doctors and nurses who performed them. I need an interview from someone who was actually working in a MASH unit during the war to complete this project. if anyone is interested please send me an e-mail. The interview can take place online, it would just be answering a few questions, and i could send them to you before hand. So anyone interested, please e-mail me, thanks!
