Comments: We may not always agree with government directives, but troops on both sides of the border have kept our countries free for over 200 years. Canada and America celebrate birthdays this week, let us pray for those who have paid the supreme sacrifice and also for the parents who have also given so much.

Comments: I hope this helps me find out some information on My Father who just pasted away last Tuesday the 22nd on June 2004. His Name was Alvin Otto Thornton and entered the Army in Ohio. He served in Korea between 1949 and 1954. He spent 18 months overseas and was shot twice in his leg. My dad did tell us some of the war stories and was very proud of his time served up until his passing. He mustered out of the Army at Camp Attaberry Ind. If any one can remember serving with my father any info would be great. thanks so much.

Keywords: I was stationed (or maybe I should say co-located) with the 547th Engr Co (Float Bridge) at Camp Mercer, Korea from July 1963 to April 1964. I was with USACDK (US Army Chemical Depot Korea) and we occupied the two warehouses on the right and the one on the left as you came in the main gate. We occupied the "new" ciderblock barracks just below the water tower at the back gate (which was always locked) and had the orderly room on the other end of the building from that of the 547th which was closest to the fence-line. In March/April 1964 USACDK moved to Camp Carroll in Waegwan (reason Chemical Depot was too close to DMZ, or so they said). We dug a pit with a bulldozer - doned rubber suits and gas masks and dump every imaginable chemical - hundreds of gallons if not more - into the ground on a knoll behind the second storage warehouse on the right. Yet, when I returned to Korea and revisited Camp Mercer in 1978, I saw no noticeable change in the surrounding country side plant-life-wise which I found surprising. Camp Mercer had not changed at all from 1964 to 1978-80 when I returned althought the village outside the gate had. I still have a company crest of the 547th Engr Float Bridge company, tokens we used in the slot machines at the club and lots of photos. I remember the only Special Forces Det in Korea was co-located with us. I am trying to locate guys with USACDK including SSG Earle Foster, Jim Sparks, lst Lt Kem (US Army), and of the MPs including Everly, Grulke, Spears, Connear, Barnes and others. Also would like to contact anyone else there in the 60's. More to come. Ray Bows, M/Sgt retired (Pvt-2 to SP4 back then)

Comments: Do any crane operators out there remember being sent to nam in spring of 66 to load and unload cargo around Camrahn Bay as troop augumination, not permanent, from other postings in SE asia? Morning reports were probably kept at permanent base. This assignment lasted about three weeks to a month then back to regular units. Was Agent Orange sprayed along DMZ back in 64-65 or 66? That mist could trvel for miles on the wind. Please help, its been a long time. Thanking everyone in anticipation.

Message:

I am looking for old army buddies, SSG Andrew Koji and PFC Earnest Fontaine, served together at Camp indian from approx. 1975 thru 1977.

I served in the Combat Engineer's in a small group stationed at Camp Indian from 1976 thru 1977. I was a young, homesick PFC strait from boot camp at FOrt Jackson S.C. From memory, I remember doing alot of construction work, pouring cement at Camp Casey, in the freezing cold weather, and building the collapseable barracks. My greatest challenge was on the DMZ. I was a part of the construction detail at Panmunjom to construct what was then known as the Demarcation line. It was a strip of concrete, approximately 26 inches wide, running East and West between the building's at JSA that run North and South. Beyond the JSA area, we also constructed concrete post approx. 4"X4" representing the demarcation line, seperating North and South Korea. I was at Camp Indian during the tree cutting incident when Captain Bonifus was killed. This was a trying time for everyone preparing to defend the DMZ in the event of an invasion from the North. My heart goes out to those directly involved with the tree incident. I also served at Fort Carson from approx. 1977 thru 1979 and Ft Leonardwood from 1979 thru 1981. My memory might be off a little on the dates so don't hold me to it. lol. assigned Units; 44th Combat Enginner's 52nd Combat Engineer's 5Th Combat Engineer's I am presently about to retire from the National Guard and would like to find my old buddies.

Thank you for this site. Good to see other's on the message board familiar with camp indian. Other names from a distant memory, SSG Anderson, SGT Jones, PFC Whitcomb, hmmm, short memory.

Comments: Was with D Co 44th in 1979-80, When I first arrived my platoon was on a project near the DMZ, we stayed at Camp Castle which was a facility engrs compound if I remember correctly. At any rate we revamped latrines on camp Stanton then moved across the bridge for another project then to Camp Casey to construct a couple of buildings there.

WERE IN THE FIELD AT POHANG, I USED TO MAKE A LOT OF MATERIAL RUNS FROM ASCOM TO POHANG. THEN THE ENTIRE 44TH EBC MOVED TO CAMP CARROLL, WAEGWON, IN SPRING, 1963. I SPENT A LOT OF TIME AT THE OASIS CLUB, DRINKING MAKOLI AND POHANG PORT WINE (WHEN TIMES WERE HARD). LEFT THE 44TH IN MAR OF 64. AND GOT STATIONED WITH THE 11TH AIR ASSAULT DIV., AT FORT BENNING, GA. i REALLY HAD MY BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE WHEN I WAS WITH THE 44TH ENGR BN.

Comments: I was very proud to have served with the 44th EBC.I did some fast growing up and made some life long friends. We worked 12 hour days 6 and 7 days a week. We played just as hard. God I loved it. I was wondering if there is a way to obtain a jacket or tee shirt to continue to show my pride of this unit. Presently working for the 355th civil engineer squadron at Davis Monthan AFB Tucson, AZ. As a civ. employee.

Comments: I found this site while doing some research on a book about my Father-in-law's experience during the Korean war. He had a much tougher time than I did.

I was the Assistant S-3 of the 44th from Sept 82 to Sept 83. The BN CDR was LTC Caggins. I worked for MAJ Robin Cababa (recently ran into him at the Huntsville, AL airport, now Bird Col.) He was a consummate officer.

Just like to say hi to some of the old guys - Don Curtis, Mike Lehman, Trent Keeble, Dean Meyer, Don Lynah. Hope all is well with you.

Like to find members of the 44th Engineer Const Bn. The battalion
is still on active duty in Korea. I was cadre of original Bn at
Ft Bragg, then to Ft McClellan, Alabama then to west coast
sailing to Fuchinobe, Japan and finally Inchon, September, 1950.

We have an organized 44th Engr Bn Association with 230 members
gathering together for annual reunions at various parts of the country.

Sept '97 we'll be in Charleston, SC. The seven new members since last
Sept. have remarked that they spent years trying to find out if the 44th
was organized. This would be another source.

I'm and my father, Foy Garris,
was left for dead during the Korean Conflict and when I
bought my computer, I started looking for his old army
buddies on the Internet. Within no time, a long lost
friend who had been searching for him for all these
years found him (he never believed he was dead; Dad
was sent to Japan for five months to recover). Dad
would love to hear from others that served in the 44th
Engineers, 10 Corp during 1950-1951.
