Your chance to hook up with men from the Korean years 1950-56. Details and more information upon request.

I returned to Fort Meade Md and worked with the 2nd Army Hq Section running IBM machines . I mustered out in April of 1955 and attended Penn State in Electrical Engineering. I worked for The Commonwealth of PA for 36 years until I retired in 1996. Have 6 grandkids and live in Patton, PA Regards, Ted

Before my induction into the famous 440th, me and my brother were musicians and played for various clubs in the states. I left the 440th in August or early September and went to Tachikawa Air Force Base for rotation back hoe. I was on the USNS Buckner for 17 days through 3 storms, and finally made it to pier 67 in San Francisco. I finished out my tour of duty at Fort George G. Meade in Laurel Maryland working on IBM machines. I mustered out as a Corporal with promise to go to OCS if I reupped. I chose to go to PennState Instead. Regards, Ted

Comments: I am the Historic NCO for C Co 440th Signal BN. The 440th Signal Battalion will be deactivating in JUL 07. I am trying to put together an essay about the BN's involvement during the Korean War during the summer of 1953. Some of the information I am looking for is:

1. Chain of Command 2. What was the unit's mission? 3. What was their AOR (Area of Responsibility? 4. What type of equipment was being used at the time? 5. What units were supported by the 440th?

If anyone has pictures they would like to share it would also be greatly appreciated.

This essay, along with many more, will become part of the historical archives when the unit deactivates.

If anyone has any information I could use it would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: I was on an "undesirable cadre" list in 1951 and shipped to Korea, assigned to the 440th from August until Nov. or Dec. My job was the laundry NCO, in charge of the local laundry on base. It was run by Koreans so I didn't have anything to do, excpet make the water run to the Han with the guy who drove the truck. I rode "shotgun."

An IG team came through our outfit one day and discovered I had an infantry MOS, so pulled me out and sent me to the nearest repple depot for reassignment to an infantry unit.

Never did know what the 440th did.

My outfit was the 440th Aviation Signal Construction Battalion. We
were (as SCARWAF means) Special Category Army With Air Force - attached
to 5th Air Force Rear. When I got there in l952 we were billeted at
Ehwa College, west of Seoul. It had sustained light bomb or artillery
damage and was pock-marked with bullet holes. But we fixed up and
lived a "country club" extence - maybe one of the only ones in Korea.

But it wasn't to last. In '53 were were moved out...south on US l to
Anyang Ni. There was a small factory office building, small factory
building - both bombed out - and a desserted rice paddy.

We set up at first in tents and went to work on the bombed out
structures. The office became Headquarters, the factory an auditorium
used mostly for movies at night. Eventually we replaced the tents with
quonset huts and life became decent.

After the armistice, we even formed a battalion baseball team and played
in the Korean championship playoffs at Seoul City Stadium. The winner
got TDY to Tokyo for the All East Tournament. Alas, we lost and went
back to Anyang Ni to await eventual rotation to the ZI and discharge.

Not too many RA's in our outfit. Most of us were draftees and couldn't
wait to get back home and resume civilian life.
