424th Field Artillery Battalion (8" Towed)
Photo by Hal Barker. Copyright 1989.

The 424th was 8th Army Artillery assigned to the 9th Corps. We were 8 inch artillery and thus not assigned to any one division or regiment. There were three 8 inch outfits in Korea. We covered approximately 50 miles of the central front with the other two outfits covering the eastern front and western front.

Our newsletter, THE HOWITZER, is about the activity of the battalion members both then and now. It probably will not be of much interest to anyone outside the 424th but we'd appreciate being listed anyway.

Casualty information

From: Edward A. Bicknell Subject: 424th Field Artillery Battalion

I am looking for a list of all casualities in the 424th Field Artillery Battalion. Can you help locate this information?

Looking for names and addresses of anyone who served with the 424th FA Bn or 213th FA Bn between August 1950 and December 1954.

Also looking for first names of Aman and Ford who were captured while on op duty in Kumhwa Valley in July 1953 at the same time 1st Lt Frank Wilkinson was KIA.

Thank you.

We forwarded the pertinent information to Ed to be included in his fine Newsletter, The Howitzer. Despite Ed's modesty, the newsletter is bringing unit members together and represents a fine tribute to the unit.

Comments: I'm looking for anyone who knew my uncle, Max Thomson, from Kingsley, IA. He passed away in 1991. He served with the 424th FA Bn during 1952-1953. If anyone who served with him would like to contact me and tell me a little about Max, I would greatly appreciate it. I never had the opportunity to talk with him about his service to our country. If I haven't submitted enough information to go on, please let me know. There is a possibility that he was with "Battery B"[?], but I cannot confirm this. Thank you. Regards, John Groves

Went to CBR school in EtaJima, then to 424Hq with a group I trained with. Surveyed fall back and practice firing positions. Lived in squad tents, like 'MASH'. Introduced control line model airplanes to Hq personnel. Played poker in the fire direction bunker. Cold winters. Hot humid summers. 'Honey bucket' smells in spring. Beer rations. Saw Marilyn Monroe in the Artilery Bowl. NCO school. Built the officer's club fireplace. Helped train the 833 ROK to take control of the 'BIG 8s' in 1954. Inactive reserves Dec 2, 1954. Feared recall to Viet Nam. Engineering school on the GI bill. Returned to So. Korea in 1973 to run a Korean Corp, 900 employees, stayed 4 years. Was VP of the Seoul Lions Club. We were the only two officers in the battery. I helped train the KATUSA to operate our guns and then turned the guns over to them. I was then transferred to Baker of the 8th FA.

Comments: CPL Willis S. Elson from Snyder Colorado:

My father was a Fire Direction Chief / Chief Computer Serving July 1954, Korea.

From what I understand, he was a forward observer for some time before this. His FO position was discovered and enemy artillery killed his partner (radio op?). He was separated from his unit for about two weeks behind enemy lines (I guess the DMZ shifted?). He was reported missing in action and returned to his unit just in time to intercept the outgoing notification of MIA to his parents.

This is all I know. He passed away in Oct of 2000. He spoke very little of his service, and I'm attempting to find out as much as I can. Any and all help would be appreciated including hearing from anyone who served with him, books reccomendations, web links etc.

Thanks in advance and God Bless our War Vets.

8' HOWT. SAVED MY FATHER WHEN CUT OFF ON STEEL RIDGE JULY 1953

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
John R. Carpenter wrote on 2002-08-15 10:30:41.0

Comments: 8 inch Howitzer fire support saved the nights and many morings for the ROK Capital Division bunker complex my father (an American with 30 other Americans and about 190 ROKs) was in from July 13 to 22 July 1953. They were cut off and surrounded. Only the 8 inch batteries could give them fire support for the first week.

WHICH 8 inch group provided this support? They were east of the Heartbreak & Bloody Ridge area and west of the Punch bowl on Steel Ridge.

During the last Chinese offensive in July 1953, The ROK Army took the burnt of the offensive. The ROK Capital Division began to fall back but was hit by enemy forces at this time causing units to fall back farther than intended. One of the 21 strong points survived because of Lt. Col Kim. He rallied those ROK soldiers who were willing to fight into the bunker complex. Inside this bunker complex was an American 3 man FAC (forward air controller) and an American 28 man unit testing battlefield radar with AA weapons. The combination of guts, leadership with a little bit of help by air and 8 inch artillery support guided by radar at night and in the fog, saved this unit from being wiped out.
