| JERRY JUSTICE wrote on November 17, 2011 CITY AND STATE: DES ALLEMANDS LA UNIT: FAMILY MEMBER SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My uncle James W. Justice (JW to his friends) was likely killed in action on 12-2-1950 as a convoy tried to breakout and escape from being surrounded by Chinese forces at east side of Chosin Reservoir. We think he was part of Task Force Faith, and survived extreme cold and overwhelming enemy forces for several days untill the breakout attempt. He would likely have been gaurding the left flank of a convoy of trucks loaded with 500 wounded soldiers and led by Col. Don Faith at the time of his death. ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE SERVED WITH KERMIT CODELL JOYCE FROM NORTH CAROLINA 1948-JAN51 |
| TAMI KNIGHT wrote on August 21, 2011 CITY AND STATE: UPLAND CA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Looking for anyone who may have served with my father. He passed in 2007. He had a major stroke in 1980 when I was only 10. My father carried a heavy load on his shoulders and I suspect that a lot of it came from his service. He never talked about it. Even if there is nobody out there that served with him, I would be very appreciative of the perspective of the war from anyone who served during that same time. Kermit was injured on 12-1-50, from my understanding he was shot trying to avoid being captured and had a severe back injury. He later recovered and went back in until he was honorably discharged in 52. I loved him very much and would appreciate anyone who could shed light on what those men and women endured. Thank you. TRYING TO VERIFY A VETS UNIT |
| DENNIS BOLDE wrote on August 19, 2011 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: MARINE VETERAN Comments: I am trying to see if I can locate anyone who might remember a William "Bill" Faulkner from the 32nd. I am a Marine Vet and Paramedic, Mr. Faulker is a patient that I have made a connection with and have begun to visit on my off days. We have a great time and even on is bad days he remembers only me as his "Marine Buddy" even when he can recall much else. He has trouble here and there and is only able to communicate to me that he was in the 32nd Inf and 7th Inf in Korea. I am assuming he means the 7th Inf Div and the 32 Inf Reg. His eyes light up everytime we speak about Korea and I would love to bring some history for him the next time I make a visit. Here is the problem, his sons say he is a Marine but I can find no history of unit with the 32nd designation in the Marine Archives. The 7th Marine Reg was there but with no 32nd anything to be found elsewhere. If anyone might be able to help it would be greatly appreciated. We communicate mostly through short sentences and pointing so it can be tough to get focused in on the details. Regardless of him being a Marine or not he wants to talk anout it and I'd love to help him, he has become a good friend to me. By the way, even though we have our communication issues, I went for a visit the other day and he was on the roof cleaning off the leaves, he had also cut the lawn 1 and 1/2 acres, here's the kicker we live in Florida and the Heat index was 108 that day. | MAUREEN STARNES wrote on April 7, 2011 CITY AND STATE: FL UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father, Roy Starnes from Illinois, is anxiously looking for any of the fine men he served with in Korea. My dad was a machine gunner, and for years he wouldn't speak of his time in the service, but in the past few years he has been looking back and wondering about where all of the men he fought with are. Still living? He doesn't remember many of the names because so many had nicknames, and sadly, so many he knew for such a short time. He was there at the Inchon landing on Sept 17th, fought at the Chosin Reservoir and in Seoul. The names he can remember are Robert Best, who he has a picture of sitting with him drinking a beer! Garland Taulbee is who he speeks of often. And Wayne Shaw, who he believes to be from Illinois. He speaks of a man they called "the old soldier" (Walter he believes was his first name) who died in combat. Major Jones was his company commander. IF any of this rings a bell for anyone out there, please e-mail me. My father is 79, and I am would love for him to be able to learn what became of the men he fought with. He hates that he can't remember more, but after many years of trying to forget it is very understandable. Thanks so much for the service you or your loved one has given to us all, and I hope to hear from someone who wants to reunite with an old soldier, even if it is just to be able to remember. DMZ COMBAT MISSIONS |
| DAVID APPERSON wrote on July 31, 2010 CITY AND STATE: FT WORTH TX UNIT: 1/32 INF REGIMENT, 3 BRIGADE, 2ND DIVISION SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Service in Korea by David Apperson ___________________________________________ Email from Stephen Silvasy, Maj General to David Apperson 3 July 2010 During the months of February and March of 1978, Soldiers of B company, 1st Battalion, 32d Infantry (Buccaneers) were manning Guard Posts (GPs) Collier and Ouelette in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the North (nK) and South (ROK) Korean border in the vicinity of the jointly ROK/US manned Joint Security Area (JSA) at Panmunjong. During daylight hours Buccaneer Soldiers observed nK activities to ensure the safety of ROK/US soldiers working in the JSA. At night US Soldiers from Collier and Ouelette conducted small unit (squad sized) ambush patrols in the two kilometer area between the MDL and the ROK southern boundary fence to interdict nK Ranger Commando teams who were trying to infiltrate the DMZ. David Apperson was a member of B Company and participated in these operations in the bitter cold of the Korean winter where below zero temperatures were not uncommon. MG Stephen Silvasy Jr (US Army, Retired) Commander, 1st Battalion, 32d Infantry (Buccaneers) from 1976 to 1978 ___________________________________________ Email from Richard SMA#9 to David Apperson 27 July 2010 Specialist David Apperson, USA, Veteran David, I can confirm that during the period of May 1977 and February 1978, B Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, Third Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division did participate in the following live ammunition combat missions. Thunderbolt Mission and reaction force DMZ duty on Guard Posts Collier and Ouellette and conducting guard duty, observation post duty, and also conducting combat patrols. Special Munitions Security Mission All of these missions are actual live ammunition and security combat missions. These missions are held in all types of weather from extremely heat to sub zero weather. And that you were a member of the Company during these missions and were a participant. Finally, I can certainly validate ( even though the statement presented by a former Battalion Commander at the time in question and ultimately retiring as a Major General) needs no validation, the information provided in his statement. I assumed the duties of First Sergeant B Co, 1/32 Infantry in May 1977 and departed in Feb 1978 and I ultimately retired as the Ninth Sergeant Major of the Army, having served with Chief of Staff, Army General Gordon R. Sullivan and Secretaries of the Army, Michael P.W. Stone and Togo West in July 1995 Richard A. Kidd ~ Sergeant Major of the Army, USA, Retired VP, GEICO Keywords: DMZ, Korea, Combat Missions, Thunderbolt, Combat Patrols, Special Munitions, Guard Duty, 1/32, infantry, 2nd Division |
