Comments: My great uncle was CPL Moles. He was last seen in action on 10-16-52. There seems to be no additional information on him at this time. My family has provided DNA to JPAC to identify his remains, however, it is not a definate. I would like to hear from anyone who knew what happended to him or his company. All I know is 12 men went missing, seemingly without a trace, on 10-16-52. I hope there is someone alive with information or someone who knows anything so that we may put the pieces together. Again, his name was Wendel R. Moles and he was from Charleston WV and I believe he was only about 19 years old when he enlisted. Thank you to anyone who may be able to help.

Comments: My grandfather, Kenneth Brown Porter Sr., was in Korea in November 1950. His company was surrendered on Nov 30 1950 at 4:30am. I do not have any pictures of him in Korea. However, At least one picture of him survived from his service in WWII. My Grandpa was born in 1923. He was born in Florida and my father tells me he thinks he was in the 31st Infantry 7th Division Company B, 4th platoon, Heavy Weapons Mortar Assistant on a 60mm tube. He spent the remainder of the war till August 1953, in POW Camp 3 in Ch'ang-Song. His rank was only a Private E-2 during his service in Korea. He held the rank of Sergent until he was busted to private, just before the war, when an accidental discharge of his weapon on guard duty struck Orland Edland, another MP on his post at Fort Ord. Orland survived and never went to Korea. He lived until 1997.
Grandpa did make it out of Korea where his rank was restored only to die a few years later in a skiing accident. I am looking for any information about Kenneth Brown Porter Sr of Bay County or Panama City Florida. Service #RA34546235. He was known as the old man due to his age according to some reports. Can you help me? Thank you. J Porter

Comments: My father was in K Co. in the chosin Res. along with other members of the Company. The History Channel ran a special about the Chosin battle but only talked about the Marines that fought there and nothing about the army troops that fought and died there. I contacted the History Channel 2 years ago and that said they cant do anything about it. I made a suggestion about running a program about K Co. and they flat out said NO !!!. I think it's only fair they run a program about K Co.'s role so as not to dimmish there role in that battle. I've been writihg to as many people as i could to stress this point but to no avail. If some others start writing also maybe some thing might get done!!! My fathers name was Donald E. Blake. If anyone who reads this knew him and have any stories I would love to hear them. Thank you.

Comments: i am a niece of CPL Leslie Darrell Hudson. i am trying to locate the person(s) who tried to get in contact with CPL Hudson's father(my Grandfather, Leslie Hudson) in Missouri sometime after he died at the BATTLE AT THE CHOSIN RESERVOIR. My uncle's immediate family has lost a number of members over the last 20 years and I would like to find the person I am searching for before his other family members are deceased. His oldest sister is not in very good health so it would bring me great joy to be able to put them in touch with each other. If you can be of any help, it would be greatly appreciated

He was 76 at the time of his passing. I know he was proud of the men whom he served with, and is now, serving with again.

After 8 years of a much more sophisticated internet, I was able to piece together a little bit more of what might have happened to him then I originally did in 2001. I am looking for anyone that might have any information on him that you would be willing to share with me. Dominik was my uncle who I never knew was a member of the The Fighting Polar Bears, 31st REG, 7th Inf, I company serving at Camp Crawford in Japan before being shipped to Korea.

Comments: Dad was a Supply Clerk and was named Supply Seargent but remembers turning that job over to Francis Becker. Dad remembers helping him out. Dad remembers being shot in the arm by Chinese...and in turn Dad shot him. Dad never received a Purple Heart for his injury.. On April 30th of this year.. My parents house burned to the ground. Dad lost all of his military records, ALL of his Korean War Medals, Even his Winter Olive Drab Military Uniform. Dad has trouble remembering everything that happened over there and can't answer all the questions required to get his medals back. The one he misses the most is his C.I.B.
If Anyone at all remembers my Dad, Luster Charles or the fellas he served with.. please email me.
Thanks in advance!

Comments: I'm trying to locate my late Great-Aunt's step-son. He is/was Pfc. Tommy Zornes of the 17th "Buffalo" Infantry Regiment. He was from Greensburg,IN. I was going through my Great-Aunt's trunk of memories she left to me and found all these letters he had wrote and the newspaper clippings of where he was in a battle on September 1951 where his company was over-run and he helped turn the tide against the enemy, therefore receiving-Bronze Star,Silver Star,Korean Service Medal, and later the Purple Heart for being wounded at a later battle. I would just love to find out anything about him and maybe if he is still alive give him these old letters and stuff. Thanks for any helpful correspondance or help in learning of his where abouts. Sincerely, Brian S. Foley

My grandmother gave me his purple heart and some other medals but no one knows anything about his service and what happened to him in Korea. Comments: I am looking to find my father, George Taylor. This name may have been one of his roommates off base, as I understand some fellows used their friends names when dating local girls, when he dated my mother, Marilyn Moskal-Mugil. She had a 3 year old daughter at the time and they were living with her parents, Frank & Margaret Moskal in Arlington Heights Ill. When the dated, they would dance the Tango. I would like to meet him, just once or have a photo of him. He was quite tall (for the times), white, thin. He drove a green Chevy with wing back fenders??? I just want to put a face to the word "FATHER". I am not seeking money, family or anything other than a photo and possibly to meet, if he is still alive. He told my mother he was part Cherokee and from St Louis MO, but again, we don't know if this is true or not. He also knew my step-dad, Steve (Blacky) Barody.
Keywords: Marilyn Moskal-Mugil, Arlington Heights Illinois, green Chevy, had 3 other military police roommates, lived off base, stationed Ft Sheridan, Illinois. Shipped off to Korea prior to September, 1952, Steve (Blacky) Barody, played "chicken" on Rand Road - cop arrested him.

I found myself in Vietnam in 1966, not so dumb this time. Made it through that one safely as well.

Comments: I am the daughter of Sgt. William David Pfander. It is with great sadness in my heart that I post to you that he died on November 29, 2005 of his colon cancer. Thanks to this site, one person did get in contact with him. I have hope that some others that are still living or their relatives will contact me. I have many "people" photos that he took of those who he served with and around. I will gladly email copies to anyone who asks. Put Korean Photos on subject line so I do not delete your request. He was in the 31st Inf. Reg. Med. Co., 7th Division, Co. E, F & C and was at Outpost Dale. Now that dad has passed I can add that on the day that the armistice was signed, he managed to get an "up close and personal" photo of the banner that said, "Reunite with your loved ones." If that rings anyone's bell..... I have scanned copies of pictures of those few men that were up on that hill. God bless all of you that have served and all those who will.

Comments: The Family of Joseph Mack Harper would like some help from the men who served with the Communications Platoon, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment who were with the unit when they were stationed in Japan before going to Korea. Joe Harper had about 250 photos from the time he spent in Japan and the identity of most of the men is unknown. There is a boot camp photo of 22 men pictured with their names signed on the front. Many of these men were KIA or MIA in Korea. And there are many other photos of other men not in the main photo. They are now online at the following link.
http://www.mdshell.com/31stinfantry/cpg149/thumbnails.php?album=1
Joseph Mack Harper died at Chosin and his remains were never recovered. The Harper family has no photos or letters from Joe after he went to Korea. It is their desire to first identify the men in these pictures and then to share with others.
In Joe's Niece's own words.... I would be happy to forward any of the pix (group or otherwise) to anyone who may use it for ID-ing or helping in any way... I am also willing to share the pix to other families, which was an original hope of our family's, sharing the wonderful things we found and sharing information to learn about his life... we have no photos after he left Japan, so Korea pix would be precious to us... But no, no one in other families has contacted me...
If you are a Veteran from this Unit, please contact Joyce at celestialprincess@cox.net so we can find out the names of these Heroes.
We remember that Freedom has a Cost.

Comments: During the first week of October, 2006, my wife Beth and I visited Marie and Chuck Rumfola at their home in Avon, NY. Chuck and I had not seen each other since 1951 when we were in Korea. From the moment I met him in a parking lot, waiting to be led to his home, it was one of the nicer times of my life. We spent two days with them and the person of Chuck and his full range of accomplishments and grand life filled us with pleasure. He had just painted his house, put a transmission in his truck so he could drive him and Marie to Florida for their winter stay, and presented us with four bottles of wine he had made. His range of talents is extraordinary, like rebuilding a half dozen tractors from the ground up, building his home, making furniture, and being a most memorable host. Just an old Polar Bear here sharing some good memories.

Father Richard Doak Passed Away |

Mike Doak wrote on 2007-01-25 19:57:32.0
Comments: My father,Lt.Richard Doak, just passed away at age of 84 on January 5, 2007. His wife, Virginia, also passed away January 19, 2007. He and his wife will be interred in Arlington National Cemetary on January 29. He was from Missouri. He credited Col Kim and Col. William J. McCaffrey for his survival during the Korean war, after many battles McCaffrey said"get Doak out of there" and made him company supply officer. As a result he survived and made it back to his farm in Missouri. His family will miss him. He always wanted to tell Col. McCaffrey thank you for getting him off the front lines. McCaffrey died in Feb. 2006. Richard Doak also served as a platoon leader during WW2 in the Phillipines.God bless America, God bless our troops and God bless our veterans.

Comments: My Father's name was Glenn Alan Carter. He was part of the 31st infantry RCT at Chosin. He was in the medical corp. He was from Missoula Montana. He was captured by the Chinese and shot in the head. He escaped his capture somehow, and ended up in Letterman Army Hospital in San Fransisco. He never really recovered from his experiences or his wound. I am just getting to know my Father now, as my Mother left him when we were very young. I am hoping that someone is still left who might remember my Father.

Comments: My friends and I (from South Philadelphia) joined the army in Aug. 1946. there were six of us ,the war was over and there was no work so we all joined for 18 months. We all thought that we could hang by our thombs for that time. We were all sent to Korea after basic training . There was Joe Dallasandro, Ralph Olivo, Tony Nardello, Valentino Iadanza ,Tony Piccone , And myself John Clifton. We were lucky that we joined because all of our other friends were drafted in 1950. So we missed the war and glad of that. All of my friends have passed on now , they were all great guys and I am the only one remaining . It was nice that we were all in the 31st. at the same time. I don't remember the men that I was with in Co.B The memory is about gone.

Friends of Joe Mack Harper..We need your help |

Laura WAY wrote on 2006-06-18 02:47:08.0
Comments: The Family of Joseph Mack Harper would like some help from the men who served with the Communications Platoon, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment who were with the unit when they were stationed in Japan before going to Korea. Joe Harper had about 250 photos from the time he spent in Japan and the identity of most of the men is unknown. There is a boot camp photo of 22 men pictured with their names signed on the front. Many of these men were KIA or MIA in Korea. And there are many other photos of other men not in the main photo.

James Harvey wrote on 2006-04-14 12:03:36.0
Comments: I am one of 2 sons of James N. Harvey, who served as a combat medic in Korea. I am sorry to report that he has passed away on 18 March, 2006, of complications from lung cancer.
At the time James Harvey was stationed at Porkchop Hill, he was a Corporal.
General orders number 564, dated 2 Sep 1953, states the following: CPL JAMES N. HARVEY, US51171977, Army Medical Service, United States Army, a member of Mecical Company, 31st Infantry, distinguished himself by heroic achievement near Mak Tong, Korea. On 16 June 1953, CPL HARVEY and his comrades proceeded to screen the area for some wounded members of another friendly patrol. As CPL HARVEY and his comrades moved over the crest of a hill, they noticed that two men were moving about the area. Upon advancing further, CPL HARVEY and his comrades were fired upon by the enemy. Seeing two friendly wounded, CPL HARVEY'S comrades laid down a steady stream of fire and enabled the casualties to crawl to safety. CPL HARVEY then administered first aid and assisted in evacuating them to the aid station. Then CPL HARVEY and his comrades made radio contact with four other friendly wounded and they moved through exposed positions, in full view of the enemy, and did not leave the area until they had carried the men to safety. The heroic actions of CPL HARVEY reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
Also listed on the general orders are the actions of three other men: CPL FLOYD L. HAMM, PFC HOWARD L. WINDER, and PVT DANIEL A. FLANAGAN.
My dad never told me any stories about the time he spent in the Korean War, except that he was made a medic in a hurry for this war, and sent right out to the front lines. On the first day there, he witnessed a soldier's foot being blown off; and administered first aid to the soldier. I have a few photos of his buddies out in the field. None of them have names written anywhere, so these men are anonymous to me.
I also joined the regular Army in the 80's as a medic. Luckily for me, I never had to serve in wartime. When I joined, the only thing my dad had to say was, "Good luck".
Now that he's gone, I'd like to hear a little about his friends in the Army. Please contact me with any information that you may have. The "forgotten war" is only a label. There are many of us who will never forget the bravery of our servicemen.

Tom Sheehan wrote on 2006-02-06 20:22:23.0
Comments: In closure to the Pro Patria outfit: For those who might have known of my years-long search for John R. Slack, a most memorable comrade who served with me at HQ Co 1st Bn 31st Inf Regiment, Korea 1951-52, I must provide this latest information, all of which came as a result of an on-going assist from former Saugonian and historical artist Jeff Fiovaranti and his pal Tim Perkins, a Viet Nam veteran. John R. Jack Slack, RA12370942, M/Sgt, U.S. Army, born 8 Jun 1931, died 9 Mar 1990 and was buried shortly thereafter at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery in Texas. The only survivor information available is "a sister Helen," married name unknown, address unknown, (who was married at Albany, NY years ago and moved to California; this info was provided by neighbors on Van Schoik Avenue in Albany when Beth and I knocked on every door on that street in 2002 looking for information on Jack, who lived at 17 Van Schoik at the time of his enlistment). Confirmation of the above details was defined by his Army serial number. Jack is buried at Section PG Site 16D, Fort Bliss National Cemetery. I wish that I could advise all the John R. Slacks uncovered in my search and whom I talked to over the years; they all were most gracious and interested, especially the Marine vet in Kansas or Iowa who said, at the end of a sparkling 40 minute telephone conversation, "When you find your pal, Tom, let me know if he's as good looking as me." I am indebted to those who kept up their interest and who often asked about the search, with deepest thanks to Jeff Fiovaranti and his pal Tim Perkins, aware of the unbreakable bonds we are sometimes gifted with. May that sparkler and memorable comrade, Jack Slack, rest in eternal peace.

My father and the family have never been able to find outhow he died. The US Army did not provide that information, Just a western union saying he was killed in combat operations.
I am currently in Iraq and I was able to talk with a unit historian from the cav when they were in country. The unit historian was able to find some basic information on my uncle. I would like to help my father find out any information on my uncle.
I look forward to any help that you may be able to provide to me.

Comments: My Dad, William (Bill) Amen, was at the Chosin. I am looking for anyone who knew him. He had served in World War II, in the Pacific, so he was older in Korea (38) than most of the men. He was from Colorado. He got out of Chosin with a group of about 18 men. They passed through a village, at dawn, while the village slept. Once they were in the high ground, looking down on the village, they heard shouts and gunfire. When they looked back, another group of GIs were being gunned down. The village had awakened, by this time, and killed the American soldiers. In my Dad's group, there was also a young GI, who crawled away from the group, when they had stopped to rest, and pulled a pin out of a grenade, killing himself. His feet were frostbitten. I am looking for anyone who may have known my Dad. He's been gone for almost 20 years.

Comments: My father, William (Bill) Pfander served in Korea from 1952 until 1953. He was a medic/litter bearer and I believe he was at Old Baldy. Dad was in the 31st Inf. Med.Co, 7th Div. Company E and F. He was shifted as needed. Dad is from Essex, Connecticut. I know he served with a man with the last name of Kelly. I have access to many pictures taken in Korea and at basic training. Dad was tall and very thin... still is. He is now 75 and has terminal colon cancer. I am trying to find anyone who may remember him. He did his best to patch up and save as many soldiers as he could. He still wakes up at night screaming from nightmares. His father and grandfather owned and operated a bakery and I know that boxes of cookies and cakes were often sent. Also, he had a pet falcon while he was serving. He was a carpenter by trade and built "substantial bunkers". The insignia patch he wore was an hourglass if that helps to identify his unit. Thanks for your help. Dad is just now starting to speak of what happened and what he saw. It has been eating him up for his whole life.

Comments: My dad served from 1950 to 1951 and was at Chosin reservoir. He found one buddy and would like to know if any others are still around. The names I mentioned are ones that are on the back of pictures him and Louis Portis took. He got to go and see Louis last month after 50 some years. He would really like to hear from any one that remembers him. His name is, George Brown. Thank-you and God bless.

Daemien O'Keeffe wrote on 2005-04-21 00:00:00.0
Comments: My name is Daemien O'Keeffe, I am a volunteer for JPAC (Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command). I am currently researching a members of the 31st, trying to locate family members. Many of you know about the DNA database, for those that don't, when remains are brought back and there are no means of identifying them, they rely on getting samples from relatives of the servicemembers, some of the men who are listed as KIA/MIA are extremly difficult to find info on so they ask for volunteers like me to find the family.
If you have any information on this individual at all, no matter how small, even a conversation or anything they mentioned about family.
PFC Billy J. Dodson Jefferson City, MO. Listed as MIA 12-DEC-50
Anything would help Thanks

Comments: The purpose of this e-mail is to inquire as to the location or fate of a COL Joe Clemmons who was a DSC winner at Pork Chop Hill. I am not a member of the 31 RCT (former member of the 75th Ranger Regiment and 5th Infantry) so I apologize for inquiring into what I know is a brotherhood of warriors and is probably a private thing. I have a aging Viet Nam AF buddy who is looking for COL Clemmons as they served there together. Any info on the Colonel (then CPT) would be appreciated. By the way I admire your sacrifice and courage. Tom
