Worked most of the time at MARS radio AB4USA at Coiner.....the station also carried amatuer call sign HL9KT. NCO in charge was Fred Duval. Station hut was located opposite the MP huts. All of my lists and photos of personnel were lost shortly after my return to the ZI. Would like to hear from other ops who were stationed there during 1960.

Comments: I entered a message several years ago (since deleted) with some details of what I did. I included names of some of the guys in my squad; from that I received requests from grandsons of these guys asking for any info and pictures that I had. I was happy that I could provide pictures of their grandfathers so that these grandchildren could "see" what their progenitors were like in 1952 in uniform in Korea. To you vets who served during the war, add some names of the guys you served with to your Korean War Project message -- you might make some grandson happy.

Comments: I recently found this site. I was in 57th Signal Company on Camp Coiner from Jan 1966 to Feb of 1967. Had a great time. Worked the Major Relay station at the comm center over the hill from Coiner at Yongsan. Fell in love with Miss Chong Ok Yu who worked the gift shop on Coiner where the barber shop and steam baths were located. Lost contact with her a year after I was in Germany. Visited Seoul two years ago and Coiner has changed dramtically. No more quanset huts. Korean nationals are doing the MP's jobs. The pedestrian gate where the "night club" was located on Coiner has been "walled up." "Big Sue's Alley" is gone as well.

Comments: I clerked in Battallion Headquarters from March of 1952 until April of 1953. Memories of army life have not grown sweeter, but I do recall being billeted in an unfinished school building close to an abandoned monastery that was just beyond the palace walls....then moving to a quonset in the battallion compound where I frequently pulled CQ duty and had to alert everybody when "bedcheck charley" was spotted....also the fact that it was interesting to hike in the hills that rose just outside our fence. Would be interested to hear from anyone who worked in Headquarters or Personnel around that time.

Comments: At the high point on Camp Coiner were 2 Air Force barracks used by the 6146th Air Force Advisory Group (AFAG). Our unit motor pool was also on Camp Coiner. Our duty station was at ROKAF HQ on the south side of the Han River. During the 6 day duty week, we made two round trips a day, to and from Camp Coiner to our offices at ROKAF HQ. The "O" Club was nearby and a popular spot. The 6146th also used Family Housing on Yongson for "accompanied" members.

We had to try to repair the damage in crypto to make vital communications between fighting units decipherable. We were a solid squad with much commeraderie. We had nightly air raids from Charlie. We actually signed our names to the armistice in July 1953 but fighting went on anyway.

Looking for buddies of Larry Lingo |

Thomas Reed wrote on 2004-05-20 13:31:07.0
Comments: I am a law professor at Widener University School of Law. I run a free clinic for disabled veterans and their families who have had a tough time getting VA compensation. I represent Audrey Lingo, widow of Larry Lingo, a member of the 304th Signal battalion in 1949-50. Lingo died of complications of diabetes type II in 2001. His service records were lost in the 1973 fire at NARA St. Louis. Mrs. Lingo needs to prove that her husband had the symptoms of diabetes in 1949-50 while on duty in Japan. He claimed to have been hospitalized in that time period for the condition. The symptoms would include frequent urination, thirst, periods of faintness or light-headedness, etc. Please, any of your Korean War vets who remember Lingo who can furnish us with information should contact me ASAP Prof. Thomas J. Comments: We were the LL platoon and did mostly motor pool activity. We would set up at the 8th Army bunker and work 12 on, 12 off. Two (HOT) beers a day. I serves as the platoon clerk and worked out the hut. We received a unit citation for the July 1970 exercise at the bunker, remember? when the phony messages went live. Some of us were deployed else where and our group ended up in the dry river bed until the rains came. Water up to the headlights on the duce & half. Heating the cans on the generator manafold. The micowave guys showing us how they heated their meals with the antenna output. CD was the platoon Sgt. My wife Chery came over and we lived out in the ville. We were in Mapo Dong.

The 304th Signal Battalion was a sponsor of the orphanage in those days. Am seeking any written material regarding the army group's relationship with the orhanage and/or copies of photographs of the children or any leads to such material. Attempting to help daughter rediscover her past and maybe even her birth family. Any help would be appreciated.

LOOKING FOR YU KUN HWA OR FRED THOMPSON |

 |
PATRICIA Hozey wrote on 1999-11-28 00:00:00.0
Comments: Hi, thanks for pausing to read this... I'm looking for my uncle. His name is Yu Kun Hwa and was adopted by SSG Fred Thompson around 1955. Kun Hwa was 16 at that time and worked as a shoe shine boy. We think Fred Thompson arrived at the 304th in 1954. He adopted my uncle to save him. The last thing we knew was that they moved to Stockbridge Georgia, then possibly on to Miami. Kun Hwa may have enlisted into the U.S. Army around 1961 but got into some trouble. We've been looking for him ever since. One big problem is that we don't know if he changed his name to possibly an American one. We just miss our loved one and would be eternally grateful for any leads or information. On behalf of my Mom, thank you and God Bless. Patty
