Comments: My great grandfather Joe Warren was in the 2nd infantry, 2nd recon. He was on the USS Cust when it went ass over end. He fought all the way to valentines day 1951 when he was shot stripped of his belongings and left to die. He did survive and is still alive today. He was best friends with Charles Turner who received the MOH. Charles Turner was shot while on the tank MG when he was shot he yelled for help, SGT.Warren went over to help, he pulled him off the tank and Warren put his legs on either side of him keeping him down and went looking for the bullet, it was in meaty part of his thigh. While Sgt.Warren went to grab a cig for Turner, Turner was shot out from underneath Sgt.warren.
Joe Warren is still alive and well if anyone wants me to ask a question just email or call me(only call around 6pm est no earlier!) I also have an interview with him if you would like to hear it.

Comments: My grandfather, Anton Botek Jr., was KIA on that day. I was lucky to be able to speak with the man who helped bring his body back home. From what he told me, the unit was moving enmas and was ambushed and cut off. The recon unit was almost completly wiped out as tehy walked into teh waiting ambush. The Koreans cut off the retreat route as well. I found a detailed description of the battle online some years ago, but lost the link.
I know it is not much but it is something.

Comments: I am a reporter trying to find information on the life of Korean War Veteran Frank A. Womack of Chicago. He died alone in 2000 and was buried in 2001 as an indigent in the county plot - an unmarked, mass grave site. In the course of working on another story, I discovered Mr. Womack was a veteran. I told the VA, and Mr. Womack's body was exhumed. Later in 2001, he was reburied - this time, with honors, at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. I have some basic information about him, but I am trying to find other veterans who knew him. Could you please point me in the right direction? I know he was injured in Feb. 1951 and received the Purple Heart. He served in the 2nd Infantry Division, ARC RECON CO. I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you.

Comments: I'm looking for any information or anyone who knew my dad during his service. He was a tank driver and a medic in the 2nd recon 2nd division. His name was Arthur Razo. He passed away a couple days ago 4/25 and I'm writing his eulogy and need info...I know next to nothing about his service as he very rarely ever spoke about it...all I know is that he received a bronze star for an incident where he was giving cover fire in his tank to try and help the others in the tank to escape...for what I understand he is the only one who made it out...he also received a bronze star for saving his LT who had been shot near a Korean camp...
any info would be appreciated....

During his time there he drove a ammo truck for the first 6 months (nickname was Nick) Later my father was promoted to platoon Sgt, replacing Sgt Clarence Parker, who returned to Fort Lewis on family emergency. Some of the people he remembers are Les Lisson who recently passed away, Joe Lapoon (from porterville) Please contact my father if you remember him. Or send me a E-mail Thank you.

Comments: My father was serving as a medic on Valentine's Day 1951. Most of the 2nd Recon Company was wiped out that day. My Dad received a Silver Star for helping rescue the wounded. My father has passed away. I retired from the Army including two tours in Korea. I was just curious for more information on what happened that day. As with many in that "greatest generation" Dad kept it mostly to himself. Best wishes to all who still survive and in remembrance of those who served.

Comments: My father, Cpl. Melvin G. Gilmore, was an Armored Crew Member on M-24 Chaffee tanks with the 2nd Recon. Co, 2nd Inf. Div. He shipped out for Korea in July 1950 and was listed MIA on 15 Feb 51 after the Battle of Chipyong-ni. The 2nd Recon. Co. was annihilated at the village of Chuam-ni on the morning of 14 Feb 51. His remains were never found, but he was later promoted SGT in May 53 and declared dead on 31 Dec 53.
The only correspondence I have from him was a Special Services letter written to my mother (his ex-wife) from Seoul dated 21 Dec 50. He mentioned "pulling back, but not from the enemy", and how much he wanted to get out of Korea and back to Tacoma, WA, and, I assume, his current wife. His tone in the letter was very "down".
I am seeking anyone who might have known him. I am his son from his first marriage. He later married a gal named Reva Mitchell from Tacoma, WA on 24 Jun 50, the day before the North invaded South Korea, and just a few weeks before he shipped out for Korea with the 2 I.D. They had no children. Because I am his only son, I was able to attend college under his G.I. Bill and through a Veterans Administration scholarship. I enlisted in the USAF after college and served as a transport pilot from Vietnam thru the Gulf War.
I discovered his family in California in 1979, but they know very little about him. I would be grateful for any information that would fill in the gaps for me.
Thanks!

Young found these 3 military people when we were driving down the streets of Pyongyang. We came across the river on a makeshift bridge well before any other troops had arrived, thus we were thr first U.S. personnel in Pyongyang. Major Young was in charge of the IVANHOE SECURITY FORCE that policed Pyongyang. Myself and Stumbough were assigned to major Young by Major General Keiser, 2nd inf div CO. I would sure like to find out who took this photo because there were 4 war correspondents taken pictures and some of these photos show all of us.

I went over to Korea with the 2nd div. in July of 50. I think we
embarked in Pusan on/or about July 28,1950. We set up shop over looking
two hills on the Naktong river just west of a town called miryang. We
were part of the thin long line that had a position on what the called
the "PUSAN PERIMETER".
I was the BAR Man in the infantry squad of the recon co.. When we broke
out we went guerrilla hunting in So. Korea for about a month. When we
got to seoul, I and my good buddy Roy Stumbough were assigned to a
Capt. Young and a group of R.O.K guerrillas to police the no. korean
capital of P'yongyang.
I think is was about 10-19-50 that myself, Capt. Young and Stumbough in
a radio machine gun Jeep were the first american troops to drive down
the main street of P'yongyang. We were greeted by two U.S. Air Force
officers who had been hiding out for over three months. They had been
shot down over P'yongyang.
Later our pictures were taking by some war correspndents and to this
day I am still looking for one of those photos.
I slept in No.Korea's Premier Kim IL Sung's bed that night. I often
wonder what ever happened to Major Young. -promoted [west point grad.]?
Later, 11-50, went back to 2nd recon . We got to 20 miles of the Yulu
and you know the rest. The chinese had the whole kunu-ri pass
blocked. What a turkey shoot. I was wounded when my jeep got blown up
and ran for the hills.
Got out of the 35th station hosp. in Kyoto, Japan in 2-51. Went to the
R/R center at camp drake . Came home in 12-51. to Camp Cooke, Ca.
[now Vandenburg A.F.B.] Discharged 9-15-52. P.S. Roy Stumbough and a lot
of others were killed on 2-14-51 when the 2nd recon co. was hit hard by
the chinks.
sincerely;
