Award of Combat Infantry Badge (CIB)

Comments: I am searching for any CWS Bn soldier that has ever been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge or anyone that feels they are entitled to this award. There is no good reason that CWS Bn soldiers who were attached to various Infantry units for the purposes of providing fire suppoert with out "four-deucer mortars" have not been awarded the CIB. After all we were fighting the enemy in support of the Infantry units so it is only natural we should have been awarded the CIB even if we didn't have an Infantry MOS. I have only one question does ones blood run in a different color if he has an Infantry MOS. Please contact me on this subject.

Comments: I saw your article on your father Sgt Richard Thomas, and I couldn't remember him but in going through some of my pictures I believe I did find a picture of him. At the time we were on the east coast in Xcorp. It is a picture of him holding our mascot Deacon who really was the Chaplins dog.It really was a long time ago and we're really joggin the old noggin. You also mentioned pictures of John Cilento who I remember quite wellJohn and I kept in touch for quite awhile and as time passed the letters stopped. Thanks for the memories. Comments: Charles Cooper may have served in the second chemical mortor. He thinks it was in the 1st chemical mortor but I find no trace of that unit. Comments: Started as platoon officer and became company exec after company exec waas killed and WO was injured. I was in charge of noncomm school at btn rear about August 52. I remember the mud being 10 inches deep. Rain most of the time that fall.

Reports were that some bunkers in the front caved in on the infantry solders. Then the cold and snow came.

Comments: Looking for anyone that might have known my father SGT Richard S. Thomas who was in S-2 Operations in Nojonpyong, North Korea. He worked in the radio tent. Comments: Did't get a chance to serve in Korea in the 50's. Retired this year... I was lucky enough to serve with the 44th Chem company 2nd Chem battalion for Iraq. Just wanted to say God bless you all. Fellow Dragons are a separate breed and have a deep hearted pride. Comments: Hi 2nd Chem Vets ... Im not 2nd Chem nor a Vet, but I read a 2nd Chem story and Mr Richard Barbor added some info. When I read that, with all due respect to the GI casaulties there .. it was great cause it deatailed and clarified my Dads story of his first night going up on the front. Dad was in the 180th IR. He couldnt remember where he was that night, but always said the ROKs were being over run by the NKs. The 180 was ordered to reinforce the ROK but then stopped. That ROK was ordered to hold and artillery was shelling right out front of the trenches. Mr Barbor stated that there were photos of 854. Id love to hear anything about 854, but could you please send me some pics of it and 799/812. Talk to me. THANKS Vets !!!

Keywords: Searching for anyone who knew Leo B. Yelle. He arrived in Korea in Oct.1950 with the 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion. He was in Company B. 3rd platoon and was in Unsan and became MIA on November 2, 1950. Can not find anyone who can remember him or remembers seeing him or knows what happened to him. Some history of 2nd chem-461 inf hv mor

Comments: I served two tours in Korea, first with the 987 Armored Field Artillery, late spring 1951 into 1952,Fort Bliss a short time and then to the 2nd Chem. To get the history straight--the name was changed from 2nd Chem to the 88th inf Hv Mortar. A nice blue and gold sign was painted and put up. Looked really sharp. However there was a problem with the 88th record. The tale we were told was they lost colors in WW2. Anyway sign came down fast as it went up and became 461st. I was survey Sgt.[party chief] [and at times pvt. I was a good surveyer but not much of a soldier]I was with 461 the bad days just before the peace agreement. We did lose some men those last bad days. I ended up with purple heart, dirty shorts and a love of civilian life. I am retired and have time to answer. Jog my memory. What was the radio call name.

Comments: My grandfather was in the 2nd Chem Mortar Bn. He had a casualty on Sept 18, 1951. He was taken to a army hospital that was ran by the Swedish. His file was in the St Louis fire and now his injuries and MIA information is missing from his record. If you have any inforamation on him please let me know

Korean War Memorial

Comments: The Alabama Korean War Memorial was dedicated this week at the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Park. It was a very impressive ceremony and the memorial is first class. Any Korean War veteran should stop and see this memorial if they are travelling on I-10 east of Mobile. There is also a nice Vietnam Memorial, submarine U.S.S. Drum, U.S.S. Alabama battleship, and numerous planes (including the SR-71 spy plane, B-52 and others)tanks,etc. Plan to spend a full day at the park.

Comments: I joined the unit in Oct. 1952 and left in early July 1953. I was 3 days at sea coming home when the armistice was declared. I had my 20th birthday in Korea. The Battalion was at Kumwha when I arrived. We started moving when the thaws came in early April. We supported R.O.K units all of this time. I remember supporting the 1st Marine Div. above Seoul, the 7th Infantry Div. near Chorwon, The Greeks and Turks in that same area and the 555th R.C.T. In late May or early June 1953 we moved over toward the east coast to support R.O.K. units. I remember that part of Korea as being rugged and mountainous. I left from ther in early July heading for the good ole USA. I will have my 69th birthday in less than a month, so it has been a long time I was CBR Warfare enlisted man during my entire stay. I worked mainly in operations forward. The last 4 months I was intelligence sergeant. I finished out my tour of duty at Headquarters 3rd Army in Atlanta. I worked in the G2 Security Division with a Captain who had served in one of the firing companies while I was there. His name was Dodson. I think his first name was Curtis, but I'm not sure. POW 2nd Chem. Mortar Bn

Comments: My husband, Gerald Paul "Jerry" Nelson served in 2nd Chem Mortar Bn and was a POW sometime between Jan. or Feb, 1952-Oct. '52.

His records were destroyed in St.Louis Fire. Need proof of POW status for VA. Jerry is currently in a hospice home suffering from metastatic lung cancer with brain involvement.

Has given consistent information in past but can no longer remember. If anyone recalls Jerry, a smiling guy who loved to cook and came from New Orleans, LA., will you please write me? Thank you.

Comments: COMMENDATION RIBBON AWARDED OTIS HELTON WITH IX CORPS IN KOREA Army Sgt. Otis R. Helton awarded the Commendation Ribbon for meritorious service Company C of the 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion in Korea. He was cited for the period Feb 29, to Nov. 22, 1952. The citation reads in part: "Sergeant Helton, because of his leadership abilities and good military bearing, advanced from an ammunition bearer to squad leader and acting platoon sergeant during his tour of duty in Korea. "Sergeant Helton's duties were that of directing his squad in fire rnissions and he Performed them in an exemplary manner."

Receives Purple Heart The Purple Heart for wounds received in action is presented to Cpl. Otis R. Helton of Gulfport, by X Corps- Artillery commander, Brig. Gen. Kenneth S. Sweany, at a frontline ceremony in Korea. Now recovered, Helton is serving as a squad leader in Company C of the 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion.
