Comments: I'm seeking any information on my Uncle, CPL James Albert, who deployed with the 29th RCT and later was assigned to the 8th Cav. He was awarded the CIB 2nd Award under 8th Cav orders but he might have been a medic. He was a Rifleman in WWII with the 63rd Inf Div.

Does anyone know how the soldiers were selected or assigned to the 25th Div or the 1st Cav from the 29th RCT.

thanks, LTC Eric Albert

Comments: Like many here, I am searching for information on Pvt-E2 John J. (Johnny) McCann of Washington D.C. Johnny was the adopted son of my grandmother (and step-brother to my mother). I am in possession of his Purple Heart Medal and certficate (issued on 1 November 1951) along with a memorial citation signed by President Truman.

In searching the web, Johnny was listed as MIA to KIA in the area near Hadong on 27 July 1950. I am assuming he was caught in the ambush.

Johnny had no other family and I don't want his name or brave sacrifice to be forgotten. The military will not provide me any other information because I am not a direct relative. My mothers family have all passed away. If anyone can provide me further information on the circumstances regarding Johnny's service and death, or even where his remains are located (I was told it was Arlington, but can't seem to find any reference), I would greatly appreciate it.

RA193522002
KIA 27 July 1950

We are searching for anyone who might have known Wayne N. Shields. Like so many, who were killed in Korea, the family has little or no informaiton on him. The casket that was returned to his family was closed and they were told they could not open it and that his dog tags inside. As near as we can determine, there were no papers, personal belongings, etc.

There is still a void and an uncertainty in our minds as to what really happend to Wayne. He will always be missed but it would be helpful if we could feel that we know the truth about his final days, hours or minutes.

His death date is listed, also like so many, as 27 July 1950. We do not know exactly where. From what I have read on this website, it seems as though it might have been Anui or Hondong but that is just a guess.

If you have any information, We can be reached at two e-mail addresses:

shieldslw@ldschurch.org or Shieldslaurel@msn.com

Love and success to all who search as we do.

A newspaper article written in the 50's shortly after Eugene Tamplin's parents had been notified that he had been KIA, says that his last letter home was from Okinawa. It was dated July 17 and he wrote that he was getting ready to be shipped to Korea.

I really enjoyed talking with you this evening. You shed a lot of light on the subject. Now, from reading old clippings I am confident that Dale did separate that that he was callled back in when the National Guard was called up.

Comments: My father NEVER spoke about his experience in the war. The article in the VFW magazine about Hadong changed that. Dad told me that it was absolute hell. He was riding in a troop transport truck and propelled himself backwards over the side after the truck was raked with automatic weapons fire. He said that he and a few others around him returned fire to the best of their ability until they were being overwhelmed. After realizing that those being captured were also being executed, my dad explained that he was not ashamed to be "shot in the ass" as he advanced in the direction of freedom. Dad was also in the "Pusan Perimeter" and told me that he and another soldier from Thibodaux, Louisiana bought a boat from a Korean and planned to sail it to Japan if the worst happened. Comments: John C. Hughes. Col. (Ret.) U.S. Army.
John "Corn Cob 6" Hughes, Who commanded Company B, 29th Inf. Regiment, and later company K, 35 Inf., Passed away quietly in his sleep, early on the morning of Jan 20th 2002. For those of you who remember him he was "Corn Cob 6" right to the end. In the last days of his life he spoke to me often about his service in Korea. He never bragged about his actions, and he never stopped bragging about his men.
The accomplishments of the men of Company B are well documented. I would just like to say that Company B, 29th Infantry Regiment, is one of only 2 company's in the history of the U.S. Army to receive the presidential unit citation. This award is for collective achievement above and beyond the call. It is not normally awarded to such small units as a company. The men of company B earned this significant award by single handily stopping the assault of an entire North Korean Regiment. This was the caliber of the men my father served with, they were the source of his pride. God bless the 29th Inf. Regiment.

Comments: When The 29th Infantry was first comitted to
Battle we were attached to the 19th Regt of the
24th Inf Div. The 1st Bn had major battles at
Annui and Chinju. The 3rd Bn's first battle was at
Hadong. In all these cases the Bn's suffered
heavy casualties. About the 1st week in
August we were attached to the 35th and 27th
Regts of the 25th Inf Div. On 5 Sept 1950 The
1st Bn 29th Became the 3rd Bn of the 35th Inf
Regt. The 3rd Bn 29th became the 3rd Bn of
the 27th Inf Regt. The 29th Regt Colors went
back to Okinawa. The 29th Rgt never fought in
Korea as a full-up RCT (we never had enough
people).

Comments: I never knew my Uncle Bobby, but feel close to him. He had just turned 19 years old when he was killed. My mother speaks very highly of him and how smart and interesting. My family does not know how he was killed. Did anyone know him? Know how he was killed? Any stories or information would greatly be appreciated. Thank you for your great service and sacrifice to our country. Your war is not forgotten.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who might know my Dad, 1st LT Ernest Edgar (Ed) Phillips, Jr. I know he deployed from Okinawa with the 29th Inf and the unit was wiped out in Korea and reconstituted into the 3rd Batt 27 Inf Reg. He left Korea sometime in 1951 after spending 18 months fighting. I believe he was the Commanding Officer of Love Company, 3rd Batt 27th Inf at one time. I don't know much about what he did, but am interested in knowing anything about him or his life while there.
