Comments: Over the years I have heard the story of the successful withdrawl of the Marines from the Chosin Resevoir.
It is my recollection that it was "The Wolfhounds" that had the dubious honor of fighting the rearguard action so that the marines could complete this withdrawl with a minimum amount of casualties.
I have never seen credit given to the 27th Regt for this heroic action. My recollection was that a Col Michaelis was in command.
Is my memory correct in this matter?

Comments: I am with the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs. I am trying to help a widow obtain her husband's Purple Heart, if ever issued. He lost his right leg to a mine in early March 1951. He was evacuated to Japan and then stateside. He was eventually discharged on April 30, 1952. She has a copy of his discharge from WWII and his discharge certificate from 1952, but no information on any awards from Korea. His records went up in smoke in 1973 at St Louis. They are trying to help but could use any documents or information to confirm his Purple Heart. If it was never awarded, maybe someone witnessed the event and can help a widow get it awarded 50 years late.

I am interested in contacting veterans who served in the 27th Infantry both during the Occupation of Japan, 1945-1950, and those who served in the regiment during the time COL Michaelis commanded it (July 1950-February 1951). Full disclosure--I am an active-duty Army officer (infantry), researching in hopes of publishing at a future date. I served in the 25th Infantry Division (Light) from 1993-1996. Your experiences are important to me, both as a soldier, and as an American.

Comments: Have been searching for some time for information pertaining to my Dad's participation in the Korean War. My mother recently uncovered a picture with the following inscription:

"27th Wolfhounds -- somewhere in Korea."

I guess my question is the oft asked, "Does anyone remember my Dad.?" My dad was PFC Shelby H. "Pete" Peters who was from Marfork, Raleigh County, WV. He was born 9 February 1932. I do not know exactly what years he was in Korea but I did find some info courtesy of an old DD214 form. Under the heading of "Decorations, Medals, Badges, etc," are listed the following:

Korean Svc Medal AR 600-65
EUSAK Cir 125 25 Dec 50
3 Bronze Stars DA GO 55 1951
1 O/S Bar AR 600-40

If I read this correctly, then one medal was awarded on Christmas 1950 and the 3 Bronze Stars were awarded in 1951. Is this right? If it is, then we know that he was in country in 1950 and 1951.

My mother also seems to remember that one of his buddies was named "Hogan."

Does any of this trigger anyone's memory? I don't know much about my father's military career. He died in 1967. A 10 year old son didn't have "the need to know" that a 43 year old now has.

Thank you in advance for any information or guidance. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Mike Peters

Dad can be reached at: angel1@bwtelcom.net

My father's unit was placed in several different places. Not very many men made it out of his unit. I would love to hear from anyone, who does know my father. He is alive and doing well. It is hard for him to remember some of the names of fellow vets. He said, "it was so long ago." Some times the memory are painful for him, as well as for others, I'm sure!

Wonderful site. Thank You for caring enough to remember all our men who fought so hard. You are not forgotten.

Comments: I just quickly read through some of these comments long distance to my dad, a retired Infantry Brig. General who served in three wars. He was deeply touched and remembered a number of these names and situations. Thank you.

Comments: Hi All

Can anyone clarify for me the location of the 25th Div Repo Ctr in April 52 and Jan 53?

My dad, John Dougherty, served in the Wolfhounds, 3rd Batt (Old Blue) at that time, as a scout/observer. I've assembled his photos into an album and now want to add some notes.

Thanks
