WILLIAM M. KENNEDY (BILL) |
| W. MICHAEL KENNEDY JR. wrote on February 5, 2012 City and State: PITTSBURGH PA Unit: 279TH INFANTRY REGIMENT TANK COMPANY Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Dad never seemed to want to talk about it...guess it was pretty bad. Here's what I know. he came out of Ft. Knox Kentucky with Company B 83rd Reconnaissance Battalion 3rd Armored Division 2nd Platoon Got this info from the Company photos he has, they were taken in January 1953 and I beleive they left for korea shortly after that as he had told me he was in Korea for about 6 months then the war ended and they were there for another 6 months or so. He once mentioned he was with a bastard tank outfit and was attached to a South Korean outfit. I rmember him mentioning Christmas mountain and Moosunee? but said he couldn't remember..His Discharge papers say he served with...quoting here...MED TNK CO 279th INF REGT... anyhow his health is failing now and i always wondered if he would get to talk to an old friend or commrade if it would make him feel better about things. What these guys did was huge! South Korea is a thriving country with millions of people living in a free society because of what they did there. ps I remeber as a kid him telling me about things they did after the conflict ended, apparently they would clear the minefields and stack the mines along the road for pick up, well the guys would get together and spend all day digging under huge boulders on the side of the mountain, pack the hole with mines and then set them off just to watch the boulder go down the mountain...also told me they were out screwing around hillclimbing with tanks and they rolled one and knocked off the turrent, i beleive there was trouble ovr that! they would get a bunch of guys together and go deer hunting with big drives and give the deer to the koreans, who were very poor and used to root through the garbage. He said the deer were small. They went fishing with grenades too! who needs bait! Have some pictures too, one with the guys standing around a stream full of cans of beer getting cold! so guess there was some fun and games for those guys too! Keywords: Christmas Mountain |

I was so excited for my father in law that I over looked the exact unit. Ted L. Oney was in the 45th Division of the 279 Tank Company from 51 -52, he was a SFC. Ted also was awarded the Bronze Star for June 16 1952.He is looking for any of the guys he served with. I am hooking him to the internet for a late Fathers Day present. So he will be here with more info. He and I were so excited to start looking I'm here. He asked a lot of names but we limited it to just a few...for now. He would like to find. Sgt. Paul B. Sheffer, Charles S. Snowden, Sg.David Laird ( I think there is a photo of him on a tank) "Big" John Crowley and William T. Ashley. He has lots of photos and of course memories he would like to share. You can email me with info for now. He'll be up and running his own computer soon! Thanks for any help you could send. Kelly Keywords: |
