SEEKING HISTORICAL INFORMATION |
| CURTIS HENDEL wrote on January 26, 2012 City and State: ADRIAN MN Unit: 51ST SPS/ OSAN AB ROK Service or Relationship: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: To Whom It May Concern, I served in the USAF during the 80's and 90's, spending two years on the perimeter at Osan AB, ROK. I am a partially disabled veteran from my time as a dog handler/trainer and have since taken to writing a series of military historical volumes headed One Hundred Years of Heroes. I am seeking any Korean War handlers that would take time to exchange information with me so that I can get the facts of K-9 service in the Korean War correct. I will appreciate any feedback you can give me and wish all here to be well, Curtis Hendel Keywords: |

Those dogs and handlers were magnificent. I prepared material on them for a magazine called STAG, in 1952, at the magazine's request. I never saw the article in print so do not know if they used it. I believe the magaze is no longer published. Bill Russell Keywords: White Horse Mountain Battle, Chorwon,N.K.; Triangle Hill, Sniper's Ridge, Kumhwa; Iron Triangle |

SCOUTS DOGS USED BY 19TH IN KOREA |
| STEVE EBERHART wrote on March 26, 2011 City and State: DALLAS TX Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Here is an article from a newspaper discussing the Scout Dogs used by the 19th Infantry in Korea. My dad is William E Eberhart, who is interviewed for this article. He was in the 19th in Korea Nov 51 thru Mar 52, so that would be the time frame for this. (My dad was also with the 34th Infantry in July 50-Taejon, then 187RCT Mar 51 - Nov 51, and 19th Nov 51-Mar 52) 19TH INFANTRY USES SCOUT DOGS AT NIGHT With U.S. 24th DIV Two Army scout dogs, Infantry Regiment for the first time recently on a night ambush patrol. No contact with the enemy was made, but the four footed soldiers drew high praise from the Yanks. The patrol was led by 2nd LT William E. Eberhart, Muenster, Texas, platoon leader from Company E. Although he had led many patrols before, both in Europe and Korea, this was the lieutenants first experience with the Army dogs. Id heard quite a few stories about them, said Lt. Eberhart, and I was anxious to see for myself just how they operate under battle conditions. The dogs certainly were well trained and know their business. I wouldnt mind having one or two of them with me every time we go out from now on. On this patrol, both Hamlet and York were used up front because the men were going up into enemy territory. We made our way up a draw, and set up our ambush in a horseshoe formation hoping to take a prisoner, said Eberhart. Several times the dogs alereted us of approaching danger, but unfortunately no one walked into our trap. Theyre really a secret weapon when it comes right down to it, said Cpl. Charles Beasley, Houston, Texas. They show the Reds are in the area long before we do. Its a mighty comfortable feeling to have them along. 26TH SCOUT DOG PLT. INFORMATION |
| MIKE DANKERT wrote on February 9, 2005 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: Hello, I am a military collector and re-enactor. I have recently become involved with collecting, displaying and portraying a Scout Dog Handler from WW II and Vietnam, mainly because of my German Shepherd "Corporal". I would also like to broaden my displays to include the 26th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon from the Korean War. I would like to know what their patches looked like? I have most of the gear from WW II, either purchased or made by myself. Any information on different gear used in the Korean War would be helpful. Also, any information on the 26th itself would be helpful, or where to find it.
