Bryan Hendricks wrote on 2010-01-08 17:07:37.0

Comments: Did anyone know my father, Gil Hendricks? He was with Company C, 19th Regiment, 24th Infantry Division from January 1951 until (May?) 1952 in Korea and Camp Hagen, Japan. During this time he served as a Radio Operator, Commo Chief, Squad Leader, Supply Sergeant, and Platoon Sergeant. His combat records shows the following:

Korean War - Summer Offensive (Chip-O-Rhea battle) Korea, North June 51 - Aug 51

Korean War - Fall Offensive (Whon-Shon Push) Korea, North Aug 51 - Oct 51

Korean War - 2nd Winter Offensive (Stat-Mov, & Pat) Korea, North Oct 51 - Jan 52

He hailed from New Bedford, Massachusetts. His military records show that he had two aliases, Buddy and Henry, but it doesn't indicate when he used them.

I'm building a profile for him at http://army.togetherweserved.com/profile/259841 and would be interested in any memories you might have of him.

Thank you for your or your loved one's service.

Comments: Hi,

Does anyone remember serving with PFC Clarence Smith? He served from 10/30/52 - 8/21/54. He was a light weapons infantryman in the 24 regiment who fought in the Korean War.

He had foreign service in Japan and Korea and was awarded Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantrymans Badge, Presidential Unit Citation (Republic of Korea), United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Clarence's nickname was Puddin' and he like to gamble a lot and he was from Harlem, NY by way of Danville, VA.

He was about 5'9 and dark skinned.

Please reach out to me if you knew him. I'd like to get some information for a book I'm writing on him.

Thanks, Wakeel wakeel7@yahoo.com

Comments: My Dad is now passed on, but he was in the Army for 21 years. He served in Germany, Korea, Africa, etc.. He was a medic on the battlefield; was seriously wounded in action by missile shrapnel (sp.?). After recovering, he returned to Duty (Far East Command). I would like to hear from anyone that may have been a comrad. He would not speak much about the different battles he was in, but he did speak of carrying wounded soldiers to safety. I know he witnessed some really gruesome things. I wish he were still here and could join the veterans that are involved with the recent documentary on "The War". I believe he would have finally been able to tell a lot of things now that so many other veterans are able to "let it out." He received several medals, including the Purple Heart. I would have to look up his paperwork to give more information. Just a week before he died of a heart attack (1993), we were all sitting at the dining table having Christmas dinner, talking about what all Dad had been through in his lifetime. While discussing the war and military, one of my brothers asked him, "Dad, if you had it to do all over, would you go through it again?" Never hesitating, he answered, "Yes, son I would." After all my years of growing up, that's when I, his oldest daughter, realized how really proud of my Dad I was. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have known him while in service. He was from Tennessee. A lot of his buddies called him "Sarg". Sometimes they tried to tease him, because he was a "Jr." (Marion Stanley Caldwell, Jr.) Thanks and God Bless the USA.

Comments: My father served with the 24th Infantry Divison in Korea from 1951-1953. He was part of the 34th Infantry Regiment. He was in three battles tehre and I belive was involved in the one of the first ones in Korean and if I'm not mistaken he was moved to another regiment, the 19th I think it was. He is now passed away (Ocotober 31, 2005) and I am in serach of freinds that may have served with him while in Korea or thier families.

His name was Eloy Gallegos aka Loy. He was born and raised in Albequre New Mexico 2-20-31 and would have said he was either from there or possible Watts, California as he moved to California but I'm not sure if it was before or after his time in Korea.

Would love to hear from anyone from 24th Infantry Division, 34th Infantry Regiments, or the 19th and 21st Regiments or their surviving families.

Thanks and good luck to everyone on their seraches!

Uniform available

Dawn Acker wrote on 2005-11-27 17:10:33.0

Comments: An odd story - I attended the estate sale of a former grade school teacher of mine (Richard Helke) in Wadsworth, OH. His family, like many do, were just "clearing house" and getting rid of everything. I sell items on Ebay for extra income, and was there to see what I might find. I was very upset to see they were throwing away - in the garbage - a WWII/Korean War Army uniform. I asked them if it was a mistake, and didn't they want to keep it or donate it somewhere? They said they didn't know anything about it, so it meant nothing to them, and told me "take it if you want it". Well, I just couldn't let it go in the trash with yesterdays pizza.

I'm not sure if this uniform belonged to the Mr. Helke I knew, or if it was someone else in his family, or even used in teaching. When I looked up the patches and badges, I see that whoever owned it was a Sargeant in the Army 24th Division. It is decorated with ribbons for WWII Occupation service, United Nations service in Korea between 6/27/50 and 7/27/54, heroic service in Korea (w/two bronze stars), a silver star, and a purple heart. The uniform is complete, with shirt, jacket, pants, and blue silk cravat.

Before I go listing it for sale on Ebay, I thought I'd hunt around and see if anyone from the 24th, or from a family member of a 24th veteran, might want it. I'd like to see it get to a "home." Not sure why this is affecting a 34-year-old non-military woman this way, or why I've invested so much time into trying to figure it out, but it just got to me, seeing it there in the trash. Drop me an e-mail at auntdawnsattic@yahoo.com if you have information or are interested. Thanks and God Bless.

Comments: JUST FYI and hope to recieve Information on anyone that may have served with my Father. A letter sent to Olen E. Noble (aka-Bud) from Lt. Ralph R. Balestrieri (from New Jersey) in 1981.

Dear Bud, This is a personal commendation for your actions in Korea while assigned as Recon Sergeant, forward observer, section 1 Battery C, 13th Field Artilliry Battalion, 19th Regiment Combat Team, 24th Infantry Divsion.

While attached to Company K on two separate ocassions, during the month of April, during very heavy fighting of eraly 1951 you performed above and beyond the call of duty. Your courage and quick thinking helped considerably in holding company K together on both occassions. You certainly deserve and earned a medal for each occassion, but unfortunetly circumstances did not allow me to put you in for one at the time. I, and no doubt others, remember and appreciate your service.

The Lt. sent a personal gift to my father in place of his error in not sending a commendation in for him.

Dad never spoke much about his service in WWII or Korea.

I would like to know more about this battle or events if anyone could help. I know there was an article written at the time (Stars & Stripes News) about a Company K that was thought to have been wiped out but reappeared and survived a large attack in April 1951. I hope others may benefit from this information I have passed on. Thank You and God Bless You All.

He was reported KIA in July of 1950 but I am unable to find his name listed under the 24th Div. Casualty list ( all units). Does anyone the surved with the 24th Div. remember anything about WOJG Langfitt....his unit, where he was killed, was he captured??? I served in Korea with the 2nd Div. and know how records can get mixed up. I was captured May of 1951 and my family got bits and pieces of info but never received confirmation I was still alive until May of 1953.

He has become one of my dearest and best friends...and seeing him share his tears, of his past war-days has promted me to write this letter. From what she can remember his name was Clyde B. Steve, he was in 24th division in the Korean War, was once stationed in Fort Gordon, in Georgia (we think), he was an E-3 and would have been an E-8 getting out of the Army. If anyone can let me know anything, I would appreciate it so much. Thank You.

He served from Nov. 24,1948 to Nov. 23,1951. On his discharge it has him listed as Corporal but I remember a story on how he got the nickname Buck from his Buck Sergeant rank. I know he was part of the army of occupation of Japan. During his service he was awarded the Dist Unit Citation, Korean service medal w/3 bronze battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation (ROK), Army of Occupation medal, and Bronze Star. I've tried to get answers from the army but no success my grandfather passed away in 1998 and his long time friend refuses to give up any information about how he won the Bronze Star. Comments: Seeking anyone that may remember my father, PFC. George W. Valli, from their time in Korea. He fought in Korea mid-1951 to mid-1952. He was stuck carrying the PRC radio most of his time there. He always spoke fondly of a friend named Tucker. He told me of an incident that may sound familar to some, I hope. His unit had been sent back to a rear area for some time of the line. They were issued all brand new weapons and and were using an old wooden building for their barracks. The barracks caught fire and they lost all of the new gear they had been issued. I have pictures of his from Korea and some of the Propaganda (Christmas handkerchief and a Christmas card from the Chinese 'Volunteers'--- Christmas 1951) I'd enjoy hearing from anyone that may remember him. He was a true american and he loved this country. Thanks for reading.

DAVID SCOTT wrote on 2001-02-05 17:02:56.0

Comments: My family recently was made aware of hearsay evidence regarding my Grandfather's (William Scott) service record in Korea. It is alleged he was court martialed at Presidio for drunkeness on duty resulting in the loss of life of those under his command or control.

Since the records fire in 73 at the military personnel center, we have no way of validating much. William Scott was an NCO assigned to 24th Inf at the time of Pearl Harbor attack. He was supposed to have been part of the liberating force into the Phillipine Islands. For his WWII service record, we heard he attained officer rank and retained it throughout the occupation period in Japan and into the escalating Korena conflict.

I am an active duty Air Force Officer at the Pentagon and hope you will not hold any of that against me. My family wants to know the truth about William Scott. If anyone knows of him, this alleged incident or the court martial, please contact me at office 703-601-2108 or email davida.scott@pentagon.af.mil or send message to home 14481 Idlebrook Court Manassas VA 20112

Sincerely, David A. Scott, Major, USAF

Comments: During the period of 1950-1952/54..several soldiers from Camp Carson use to come to our house. Many had returned from Korea and visited with my parents for some years later. I would like to hear from any of the following guys , Gene Reynolds,(Murphysboro, TN) Jack Dunlap(,Detroit Mich) Kenneth Rhoads,(Olka.City Olka) Jim York (Kansas City MO) Hayes (West Virginia)...I located Bob Newton's family and he is deceased. VandeMeter was killed on a motorcyle going on home(to Popular Bluff's MO) before being sent to Korea (if I remember correctly). They were all in the 24th infantry but do not know anything futher. Thank you

Comments: James C. is my father. He passed away in 1976 at too young an age. Unfortunately, he had not shared many stories of his Korean War experience. He was awarded the Bronze Star in the battle (I believe) in which Gen. Dean was captured. I know that he had many friendships during the war which he valued tremendously.

I am interested in any information which may pertain to my father. Is there a way to view medal citations etc.

Thank You!

PFC Robert Becker

ROBERT SEAN Becker wrote on 1999-07-09 00:00:00.0

Comments: My father, PFC Robert Becker, served in Korea from late '51 to mid '52 (or thereabouts. He celebrated his 19th birthday on R&R in Tokyo (11/51). If I remember correctly, he arrived in time for the first major retreat.

His front line experience was limited-- only a few weeks, I think. Most of that time was spent bugging out w/ everyone else. He eventually landed in crypto, where he finished out his tour. Although his first hand experience at the front was brief, he saw plenty. I'm sure of that because he never said anything about it until a few years ago. What he finally told me was strikingly similar to SFC Harris' accounts published on this site. Dad's a retired steelworker now. He just got his medals and ribbons about 18 months ago, just before Christmas of '98. He said he got them for me to have. I've never been more proud. I took his decorations to my girlfriend's home in suburban Detroit, thinking--foolishly, in hindsight--that these wealthy folks would be as awestruck as myself. Needless to say, they weren't particularly impressed. I knew I could never look at any of those people the same way again. I had never been so insulted in my life. I was prepared to enlist in the Army after high school, mainly because I thought I could use the discipline (rightfully so). My father flatly refused to allow me to. He insisted on sending me to college (he probably didn't have to try too hard!) for an opportunity he never had. He always said if another war broke out, he'd send me to Canada before I had to go through what he did. He would have had a hard time winning that argument. Dad is a pretty simple man. He always wanted the best for his kids, always wanted us to have the breaks he never got. He is a veteran of a foreign conflict that few people acknowledge--including himself, until recently. It might be difficult to convince people of my generation (I'm 27) that my father is an American hero. I guess I can understand that. I'm convinced though. As far as I can recall, he was, is, and always will be my hero.

To all who served, I am forever in debt. Your deeds have not gone unrecognized. Your actions not in vain. I believe in America. Greater than that, however, I believe in you.

Sincerest Regards,

Robert Sean Becker

Walter S. Coble

Seeking infomation about Sgt. Walter S. Coble believe he served during
the Korean War in the 24th Infantry (unsure about this since he also
during his career with the 1st Infantry, Second Infantry, as well as
1st Cavalry Div.).

Any info. you might have or suggestions on how I might get started on
gathering info would be highly appreciated.

Meantime, regarding Walter S. Coble:

his service number was RA13292317 he served during the Korean War and
served through 1963/64 when he retired. He died in 1994. I would be
interested to hear from anyone that served with him during the Korean
War so that I might get some perspective on what he experienced as he
was not very interested to discuss his war experiences with us
(children). I do know he looked forward to the day when the Korean War
veterans would be recognized with a memorial and was quite active in
the VFW and DAV in Pulaski Virginia. The few times he did speak of the
Korean War his thoughts were always with his buddies from his units
and always filled with nostalgia and the wish to meet with them
once more.
