Comments: I am looking for anyone who might have known or served with my uncle Pvt. James Crawford, from Tallahassee, Florida, Korean War. I was told that he drove a supply truck. I don't know how long he served, but was told he was sent home, after being captured by the enemy. The enemy later released him to walk back to base, barefoot in the snow. His feet were severely frost bitten. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

He has one surviving sister, Elinor, who lives in Altadena. Having been born in 1954, I never got to know him and the family never much talked about him or the events surrounding his death. I think I heard that he was a tanker.

Comments: Albert L. Symon received a posthumous Purple Heart, KIA 14 Sep 50.
I was born in 1956 but was given the honor of his name, a curious distinction. Very little info exact unit, company, etc and lots of background story about the battles, etc. I cannot place my uncle in any certain context nor can be convinced of what the circumstances of his demise might have been. Anyone knowing Albert Lee would have also known about his boxing prowess for which there are various photographs taken while his unit was stationed in Japan.
I don't care about all the hype, one way or the other, except that everyone get closure and know the multitudes who we are all indebted to. So many last names, with little to go on, so little information. We, the descendants, of so many races and walks, had common ancestors on the battle field. It would be very good to know that most of us alive today are connected by events we ourselves never shared. We are more family than we know.
I just need answers too.

Dad was a great photographer and was very friendly with everyone in Camp Hakata, Japan ( West lower Honshu side near Korea) during 1949-1952. He meet his wife, Mineko there and married her in July 1951. We found a scrapbook of names and photos of his friends along with a few items his mother saved from the newspaper. I cannot say whether they were all in B company or not.
Here is a list of the last name or full names as I have found them on the photos: Pat Ambercrombie, ? Alveraze (not sure of spelling) (from Puerto Rico), Guy Banner, Ronald K. Upp, and ? Kadaine. Some photos do not have names and I am trying to find out who they are. Some of these names are just listed in a newspaper clipping with no photos. Please contact me by e-mail first so I can send a digital photo. After you verify that it is indeed your Korean vet then I will send you the original photo. A REALITY OF WAR & THE AFTERMATH |
 |
 |
Curtis Morrow wrote on 2007-01-18 20:09:30.0
Comments: An Earlier Review by Ian Ralston Posted 30 September 2003: Although the title of Whats A Commie Ever Done To Black People: A Korean War Memory clearly suggests that this book will be about the war recollections of a young African American soldier, this work is in fact more far reaching. In the first section the author recounts his experiences of training and eventual combat in Korea, in almost forensic detail. The horror of the conflict and its impact on American soldiers, Korean civilians and Korean troops (both North and South) is portrayed in vivid and often disturbing detail. The many and detailed verbal exchanges the author recounts also highlight the contradictions many African Americans troops faced whilst fighting for freedom but at the same time (mainly recounted by the conversations with soldiers from the American deep south) the inequalities and racism faced (back) in America. In later sections the author recounts his growing awareness of the world outside the USA. Consequently, the text could also be considered a personal rite of passage, yet despite this the reader is often left with the feeling of wanting to know more about the authors life, family and aspirations before joining the military. The sections dealing with his recuperation from injury, court martial and service in Japan, add weight to the authors views regarding the nature of military life. Particularly of significance are the recollections of Japan that seem to draw together both his ability to play the system in order to survive, and to find purpose. His increased awareness of place, his extensive sexual activities (that say much about male attitudes, particularly at time of war) and growing sense of awareness brought on by the experience of war and the military culture are also apparent, though not often comfortable for the reader. This is particularly the case regarding attitudes to women. The point of awareness and sense of identity is highlighted in his discussions with a fellow (African American) soldier over their African heritage and history. I first took it as a racist insult. How dare he connect me with Africa, me, an American soldier that had proven myself on the battlefield&..later during that night&.I thought of my grandfather& .telling us small kids that his father had told him he was an African& ..then I too was of African descent. The realization startled me. How could I be so stupid? Then I realized it wasnt so much stupidity as ignorance& (page 126) There is also, in the later section of the text, some ominous foreshadowing when the author recounts his service with an airborne unit dropping supplies to the French in Vietnam. Overall, this text makes a valid contribution to not only the study of oral history of war, (particularly the too often neglected area of Korea) but also to studies of masculinity and African American identity. This is achieved essentially through the strongly narrative driven nature of the text.                  Â
A FLASHBACK, of an incident and conversation that took place 53 years ago, while station in southern Japan. In the beginning, I, like many other teenage soldiers, had volunteered in a quest for adventure. I also volunteered to be a paratrooper and was trained to jump from ?ying aircraft's and kill people if ordered to do so. For a moment my thoughts drifted back to my base and the occasion when I, along with two other troopers, would practice throwing knives. We would do it just to kill time, but it was a favorite thing with us and we got very good at it. Barbarians? Yes, we had been taught to kill like barbarians when called on to do so. There was no denying it. But to me, then approaching my nineteenth year of existence, it was just a way of life.I began telling Kaeko how we had been taught from infancy to serve our country, even to the point of sacrificing our lives if need be. I told her that as young boys we were told there was no greater honor than to die on the ?eld of battle, fighting for freedom and justice for mankind. That was when Kaeko shocked the shit out of me.  "Then, my hero, judging from the actions of your white countrymen, you were ?ghting in the wrong country. You were fighting the wrong people. The people you fought in Korea never harmed you. They never called you coons or monkeys that lived in trees. They never enslaved, raped, murdered, hung, or falsely prosecuted you for the pleasure of doing it. Then after a short pause she added, We Japanese were taught that by divine right we should conquer and rule the Far East. We were taught that our military forces were invincible and that no army or race of people on earth were superior to ours."  The two of us had been lying across our bed near an open window on a hot August day, enjoying the occasional cool evening breeze that blew our way.  After the initial shock of her statement, my ?rst thought was, Could she be a communist? (the buzz word used in the 1950s). But the fact of the matter was she had just told me like it was. We must have lain there an hour before another word was spoken. Then she ?nally said, So you see, my lover, we are all barbarians when it pleases us." Or when we feel our MIGHT, is MIGHTIER, than others.                        Â
It was 33 years before I could bring myself to speak (later to write) of my experience in korea as a Combat Infantry Rifleman... Thus; My Korean War Memoir of Fighting in the U.S. Army's Last All Black Combat Unit. Psychologically we Black Americans are encouraged from childhood, not to speak or write of our black heroic deeds.. We are encouraged not to do so by our parents, relatives and well meaning friends. The reason is they;re fearful it'll make (White) people uneasy.. So when those amongst us do it, we're accused of boasting, praising the evils of wars, or being some kind of radical. Some go as far as to say that such stories put wrong ideas in the heads of our younger generation, when in reality it leaves them with a sense of pride, and knowledge of their history. I became aware of that while living amongst our ancestors in Africa; to this day they sing about the glorious deeds their ancestors performed hundreds years ago in war and peace..Writing this book was one of the most difficult decision of my life. But perhaps it'll serve as an inspiration to other Black-veterans, to tell their stories,, our history.Perhaps, if I had known then at the ages 17, what I know now, I too might've stayed home and remained in school. But I didn't.. I chose the road of adventure, The Creator spared me,, perhaps to add this chapter, to the history of African-Americans in the making of this country; to pass it on, so that all should know,. that the freedom and privilege we now enjoy, many fought and died for it..

Youlon Hamilton wrote on 2005-05-06 00:00:00.0
Comments: For My Dad; My Hero...may he rest in peace, 4/19/2005
My father came from meager beginnings. His mother died from complications related to giving him birth. As a result, he was reared by his aunt and uncle in Clairton, Pennsylvania, where, even as a child, he worked long hours in the local steel mills and coalmines.
At seventeen he joined the Army. Assigned to one of the last segregated units of the US Army, the 24th Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division, my father was witness to manÂ’s inhumanity to man; he saw combat in Korea and was wounded in action before his nineteenth birthday.
He served his country, was wounded for his country, yet, even while in uniform, he was denied a seat in a diner because of the color of his skin. All these things served to make him the man he was in his youthÂ…strong and determined, yet hardened and sometimes angry.
Yet in spite of this, my father accepted the fear of the Lord as the beginnings of his wisdom. And, as a consequence, was able to let go of the pain and hurt that too often afflicts those unwilling to pardon the past.
He became a gentle man. His words were encouraging; his eyes always squinted with happiness, and his touch conveyed empathy and sincerity.
He had a servantÂ’s heart; always willing to lend a hand to those that needed help or offer an ear to those that needed to be heard. He did as he would want done to him, without refrain or prejudice, for he knew he was not better than any other. And in so doing, he was no better than any other, just different than most...he was a good man.
What my father learned and tried to live by the grace of God is this: it matters not that we face the flames of adversity; for adversity, itself, is inevitable. Rather, what matters are how those flames forge the mettle of our character. And, it matters not whether we stumble; for, as humans, we are bound to fall. Rather, what matters is, having learned from our faults, that we stand again and finish the race well.
Through the Refiner’s fire, my father’s character was forged with humility, for he understood that “the Lord gives undeserved kindness to the humble.” He knew that our days on Earth are given on “borrowed” time, so he lived each one as his last. And on his final day, he showed neither fear nor regret; rather, while in the arms of his beloved wife he spent his final breaths giving thanks with the words: “I love you... love you...I love you.”
To the end he endured. He was a good husband, an endearing father and grandfather, a trusted friend, and for me, an unforgettable hero, for he finished his race well.

Comments: I enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 17, 1951 and was part of an Army "experiment" which amounted to moving enlistees (mostly 17 and 18 year olds) from all over the country in early 1951 to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii where we were given basic training, reduced by 4 weeks. It was alleged that this "experiment" was designed to quickly replenish the significant loss of lives in US Army fighting units in Korea, losses ostensibly caused by the irresposible mis-management of Senior Military, noticeably Gen MacArthur, by President Truman. Our cadre were members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a Japanese unit, which had fought with uncommon distinction and valor in WWII. After basic training, we were given a week off in Hawaii, with direct orders not to leave the island to return to the mainland during that week. We were then transported to Japan where we were armed/outfitted at Camp Drake and were transported to Korea where we were then loaded onto LSTs and entered Korea via the waters of Inchon, in the vicinity of the 38th parallel. Blacks were dispatched to fighting units in the 24th Infantry Regiment and immediately were engaged with the enemy with those units. Not long afterward, the 24th was disbanded by Presidential Order, as an act to end the use of segregated units in the U.S. Military. I was assigned to an infantry company in the 35th Infantry Regiment where I was in operations with that Regiment until I was rotated 10 1/2 months later, in the middle of June, 1952, reaching Adak, Alaska aboard a transport ship on July 4, 1952. I served out my remaining 3 year enlistment at Fort Lewis, WA, being discharged on April 16, 1954 in the grade of E-5, Staff Sergeant. I was frostbitten in my hands, and then later in my feet. Following the distribution of "Mickey Mouse" boots, practically all frostbitten feet came to an end. I later lost my eye sight and sent to a Receiving Station to be treated. About 2 - 3 weeks later, my sight returned and I was returned to my unit. Paper work to award me the Purple Heart was never processed and the medal was never awarded. Attempts to correct this have been unsuccessful due to the lost of my personnel records.
Keywords: Entered Korea via Inchon in fall of 1951. Was assigned later to an Infantry Company in the 1st or 2nd Battalion. Because of the fire in 1963 at the Personnel Records Center in St Louis, I have been unable to get a copy of my military records.

Comments: Upon my father's death the military records he kept so meticuosly have been scattered. I know that he served in the Pacific Theater, Korea and Viet-Nam. My father was also a member of the Montford Point Marines Association. He was a Gunnery Sergeant at the time of his retirement. I would love to hear from anyone familiar with his duty as a United States Marine. I believe his active service period was from 1942-1967, after his second tour of duty in Viet-Nam. I know that he was in Supplies and Logistics, and received a plauque from the Third Recon Staff upon his retirement.

James B. Williams wrote on 2004-01-23 09:31:31.0
Comments: My father, James B. Williams, Sr. was a POW who died while captured. I was born in May, 1949 and his unit was sent to Korea about a year later. He won a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart while serving in Korea and I am very, very proud of him.
He and my mother wrote to each other almost everyday while he was on the frontlines---or at least as often as he could. On or about December 2, 1950 he was captured by the enemy and died about six months later---as far as we know. His last letter was sometime in January of 1951 written while in captivity and under duress. The letter was very brief and acknowledged that he was now a POW.
I hardly knew him and although I have pictures of he and I (as a baby), I never really got to know him. If the reader has any information about him or his time in Korea or the POW camps, I would love to hear from you at the e-mail address above.
Also, if anyone can tell me how to get his military records and a replacement Bronze Star and Purple Heart, I would really appreciate it

In Dec. 1950, he was wounded in the face by Chinese grenade shrapnel. He was evacuated and spent his recovery in Japan and Battle Creek Michigan before going on Dental Tech school and serving the rest of his 25 years in the service.

I have informaton to show service from 1950 to 1960. These records indicate his total service was with the USAF, however he contends that his initial service was with the U.S. Army and that he did not join the USAF until his discharge from the army. I Was told his Company served with the 24th until Feb 1952, when the 24th was sent to Japan. His company was then (possibly) attached to the 25th. I again want to Thank all the Fellas who have helped me with my quest thus far!!!My Dad rarely spoke of his time in Korea. We found out after his death (9/1/97) that he had been awarded 2 Bronze Stars. He was never one to wave his own flag. He suffered from terriable nightmares. We never dared to touch him while he was sleeping.(He came up swinging) He served with a fella that had a saying, "When I die I'm going to heaven for lunch, if I don't see your smiling faces...I'm going to hell to join the bunch." Maybe this will jog some memories. Dad's Company was sent into Koje-do POW Camp during the riots. This involved hand to hand combat. Dad served out the rest of his tour in Belvoir Virginia. He trained soldiers in demolition and trained new recruits for their Korean tour.My Dad was a solid 5ft 8in. He had auburn hair and green eyes. He could be as mean as nails with a hot temper. He didn't take crap from anyone!! He was always an honest man....I never knew him to tell a lie. He spoke it like he thought it. This did not endure him to a lot of people. He was courageous! He would be the best man to have at your side in battle!! My hope is to eventually make connect with someone that served with Dad and knew him. I want to know everything I can about my Dad....(good or bad) Please if you knew my Dad or maybe have contact with someone that might have....contact me!!! Thanks so much! Norma

Comments: My father is now deceased. It would be VERY helpful to me to understand him better, if I could have any information regarding his experiences/service in the Korean War. I have been told that he was a brown belt in karate, and taught it, that he tied the Marine Corps long distance shooting record, that he spent time hidden on islands and sent locations for our troops to fire on by morse code. Possibly did unspecified work with some special forces unit. I don't know what really happened, I was too young to understand. If you knew him, I'd truly appreciate any comments. Thank you.

Author's Biography...
Curtis J. Morrow at age 17 (1950) enlisted in the U.S. Army; on completion of basic training was sent to Fort Belvoir Virginia for demolition training. During that training he learned of the so-called police action taking place in Korea, and like many other young troopers, cut short his training by volunteering for combat duty there. On December 4, Mr. Morrow was assigned to the 24th Infantry Regiment Combat Team as a rifleman where he served for nine months. Twice wounded, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and four Battle Stare. His last two and a half years was served in Kyushu Japan, with the 8081st, Airborne & Packing Company, of the 187th RCT. There he attended jump-school and became a Paratrooper. In 1954 Mr. morrow was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. He now speaks at schools and is frequently a guest on radio talk shows and occasionally, television. He is also a founding member of the 24th Infantry Regiment Association of Illinois. A member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veterans Association and the American-Legion. He's very active in promoting the history of African-American participation in the military history of America; and have had several article published in Chicago's newspaper.
At present Mr. Morrow is working on children stories, using African mythology; and promoting his two publishes books, What's a Commie Ever Done to Black People? and Return of The African American (a memoir of his eleven years in Ghana West-Africa). While there (1966) he was adopted by an Ashanti-Paramount Chief and bestowed the name of “Achampong.” and thereafter called, “Kojo Achampong.”
Mr. Morrow have recently (March 6 through the 14th, 2001) returned from a reminiscing trip to South Korea, in memory of a famous battle his unit, the 24th RCT, spearheaded with an amphibious boat crossing of the Han River. It was to be the final liberation of Seoul, South KoreaÂ… i.e., Operation Ripper.
For Information concerning his Reminiscing trip, and Presentations, please visit>>

I knew him during my childhood and saw the effect of the war on him, I later went on to serve in Vietnam and understood more of what happened to my Uncle, if possible I would like to know of more specific details of his honorable service. I know from his uniform insignia he served with the 19th of the 25th Infantry which I believe was attached to the 24th Infantry Div. at the time. My Uncle died in 1969 and I believe he thought I hated him, I did'nt, but I did'nt understand his experience. I hope I can find someone who may have served with him and share his experience with me. Dear Sir:
I am assisting a former member of the U.S. Army, Mr. Tom Stoney,
to gather information on his brother, CPL Oliver H. Stoney, Jr.
CPT Stoney served with C Co, 1st Bn, 24th Regiment, 25th Infantry

We believe he was held in a prisoner of war camp in northern Korea.
During repatriation, CPT Stoney's family was informed that he had
died in captivity. At the time of notification, Mr. Tom Stoney was
himself assigned to the Korean Theater. We would greatly appreciate
any information you might have or information you might be able to
provide to help in our search.
