Did anyone know Charlie Arbuckle?

Todd Martinez wrote on 2004-12-14 21:18:13.0

Comments: Charlie Arbuckle passed away recently, and my Uncle Eric asked me if I may be able to put his medals together along with his collar brass and some other momentos. I'm building a shadow box and I want to give it to my Grandmother. I am looking for anyone who may have known him. His full name was Charles Henry Arbuckle, he was born in 1927. If any of you remember him please write, any information would be welcome.

Keywords: Charlie said he was with the 24th RCT and saw combat with them until 1953. He was awarded several bronze stars. He was busted from E-6 to E-1 in 1953 for drinking with some buddies.

Comments: I enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 17, 1951 and was part of an Army "experiment" which amounted to moving enlistees (mostly 17 and 18 year olds) from all over the country in early 1951 to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii where we were given basic training, reduced by 4 weeks. It was alleged that this "experiment" was designed to quickly replenish the significant loss of lives in US Army fighting units in Korea, losses ostensibly caused by the irresposible mis-management of Senior Military, noticeably Gen MacArthur, by President Truman. Our cadre were members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a Japanese unit, which had fought with uncommon distinction and valor in WWII. After basic training, we were given a week off in Hawaii, with direct orders not to leave the island to return to the mainland during that week. We were then transported to Japan where we were armed/outfitted at Camp Drake and were transported to Korea where we were then loaded onto LSTs and entered Korea via the waters of Inchon, in the vicinity of the 38th parallel. Blacks were dispatched to fighting units in the 24th Infantry Regiment and immediately were engaged with the enemy with those units. Not long afterward, the 24th was disbanded by Presidential Order, as an act to end the use of segregated units in the U.S. Military. I was assigned to an infantry company in the 35th Infantry Regiment where I was in operations with that Regiment until I was rotated 10 1/2 months later, in the middle of June, 1952, reaching Adak, Alaska aboard a transport ship on July 4, 1952. I served out my remaining 3 year enlistment at Fort Lewis, WA, being discharged on April 16, 1954 in the grade of E-5, Staff Sergeant. I was frostbitten in my hands, and then later in my feet. Following the distribution of "Mickey Mouse" boots, practically all frostbitten feet came to an end. I later lost my eye sight and sent to a Receiving Station to be treated. About 2 - 3 weeks later, my sight returned and I was returned to my unit. Paper work to award me the Purple Heart was never processed and the medal was never awarded. Attempts to correct this have been unsuccessful due to the lost of my personnel records.

Keywords: Entered Korea via Inchon in fall of 1951. Was assigned later to an Infantry Company in the 1st or 2nd Battalion. Because of the fire in 1963 at the Personnel Records Center in St Louis, I have been unable to get a copy of my military records.

Comments: Upon my father's death the military records he kept so meticuosly have been scattered. I know that he served in the Pacific Theater, Korea and Viet-Nam. My father was also a member of the Montford Point Marines Association. He was a Gunnery Sergeant at the time of his retirement. I would love to hear from anyone familiar with his duty as a United States Marine. I believe his active service period was from 1942-1967, after his second tour of duty in Viet-Nam. I know that he was in Supplies and Logistics, and received a plauque from the Third Recon Staff upon his retirement.

James B. Williams wrote on 2004-01-23 09:31:31.0

Comments: My father, James B. Williams, Sr. was a POW who died while captured. I was born in May, 1949 and his unit was sent to Korea about a year later. He won a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart while serving in Korea and I am very, very proud of him.

He and my mother wrote to each other almost everyday while he was on the frontlines---or at least as often as he could. On or about December 2, 1950 he was captured by the enemy and died about six months later---as far as we know. His last letter was sometime in January of 1951 written while in captivity and under duress. The letter was very brief and acknowledged that he was now a POW.

I hardly knew him and although I have pictures of he and I (as a baby), I never really got to know him. If the reader has any information about him or his time in Korea or the POW camps, I would love to hear from you at the e-mail address above.

Also, if anyone can tell me how to get his military records and a replacement Bronze Star and Purple Heart, I would really appreciate it

Comments: in 1951 my grandfather was shipped to korea on the USS GENERAL BLACK (or so we think that is the name of it) while there he was in the 25th infantry 8th field artillery headquarters company... i would appreciate it if someone would contact me with some information about any of this... i feel like i have hit a dead end.. hoping there is some way to find out more since he rarely talks about it feels like a big dark secret. Hope someone can assist me with my search because i am completely dedicated to finding out all i can about this part of his life

Comments: My dad is Ed Gayheart, his records were destroyed in a fire and he is trying to reconstruct information verifing he was in Korea in the 6th tank bn. He is trying to get disability from the VA. It drives me nuts to see my father with nightmares and all he has dealt with and having to prove he was there because of a fire. If anyone remembers him please contact me. I would appreciate it and I know he would. Thank you from a Korean vets daughter. God Bless you all and Thank you for your sacrifices!

Comments: Until recent times, my father rarely spoke of his actions in Korea. I believe he was a BAR-man in the 1st or 2nd platoon, Fox Co.

In Dec. 1950, he was wounded in the face by Chinese grenade shrapnel. He was evacuated and spent his recovery in Japan and Battle Creek Michigan before going on Dental Tech school and serving the rest of his 25 years in the service.

In his waning years, I'm sure my father would appreciate any information regarding his comrades-in-arm that served with him in Korea.

Thank you very much and God bless.

Comments: I want to get any information on the medals and citations they received and anyone who remembers him. He just passed away in Boston 3-18-03 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery and that was a GREAT HONOR to be able to make sure that was done for him, after many years of dedicated service to this country.

Comments: Mr. Tyler served in the Korean War from the spring 1950 to the fall of 1952. His records were destroyed by fire and are no longer available. I have informaton to show service from 1950 to 1960. These records indicate his total service was with the USAF, however he contends that his initial service was with the U.S. Army and that he did not join the USAF until his discharge from the army. What he needs is any infromation that will confirm his tour of duty as a Combat Infantryman in Korea to help support a disability claim with the VA.
