Comments: Looking for unit members of my father, Dewey Ames, who can provide any information concerning battles, or who have any personal knowledge of events during his time in the service during the Korean War. He entered the service on November 26, 1948 and was discharged at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, on June 18, 1952. Was in Japan for a period of time but we have no other information. Father is now deceased and I have a brother who is interested in any information. Thanks, Joan Genz

Comments: My father enter the war in July of 1950. He was involved in a landing where a miscalculation had them jumping into 8 feet of water instead of the four they thought they were in. My dad and another man saved between 15 and 20 men from drowning. I believe the fellow that helped him was a James Evans who my dad believe was KIA. Their immediate officer (Platoon leader?) was a Capt Brown who was KIA that day or the next. Other people that served with him that he has told me about are, George Young, Sidney Potter, Samuel Dukes. He joined the 1st Raider unit in Jan '51. He was a demolition expert. He fought in numerous battles recieving the the Silver and Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He is still alive but his health is failing. We live on opposite sides of the country and do not get to talk about the war very often.

MICHAEL Hollinger wrote on 2001-12-14 23:02:03.0
Comments: My apologies for refering to my Dad as private when it was CPL. Glenn Hollinger. I am trying to get Dad signed up for the Korean Medal since he served in country at that time but have run into the red tape. All he had was his honorable discharge certificate but it is dated wrong. They have him listed as finishing in 1961. Is this because they may have reissued the certificates after the fire the records department had? Has anyone else run into this problem? I called and got through after a time to the people who issue the paperwork for the medals but I still have to get his D-12 or something like that. Hope the rest of you who bravely served don't have as much trouble. I will try and see if I can get Dad to write down the names of the men he remembers that have served with him. I have found two in my own church here in Tallmadge that served in Korea or that were associated with it during the 51 to 53 time period, one in the navy and one in the airforce who went to Japan. God bless .... Rev. Michael Hollinger

Comments: Spoke with Dad, he served from 1950 - 1953 and rattled off the names of about 9 men from New York to California that he kas limited contact with. He started at an island off the southern tip of Korea and then ended his tour at the 38th parallel. Although he remembers many of the names of the areas he was in I do not but will still contact him if anyone thinks he can help them or knows him. Rev. Michael Hollinger

He knew of a few who served with him but I think one or both are now dead. I could contact him if any knew him and wanted me to, he does not have a computer. Comments: I joined 24th Division in Korea in December, 1951. I was only in Korea two months and I came back to Japan with the 24th Division when it returned to Japan. Hq. Rear was about ten miles from Seoul at Yung Dung Po. Our houseboy was named Kim. We lived in a tent and had our office in a permanent type building. Our chapel was a permanent type building and was outside the compound. Bed Check Charlie came by several times and straffed the area. We could see the guns being fired on the front linte at night. We were about 65 miles from the front. I was put on guard duty by mistake. They handed me a carbine and told me my duty station was the air strip. I had never seen a carbine. They told us not to put a round in the chamber. I put the clip in my overcoat (the old horseblanket). I did not under-stand how a carbine was used. I was told after I came off guard duty that I did a stupid thing. I nearly fainted. Court Reporters were exempt from guard duty because we had so much to do. Col Lyle Abbott was JAG Commander. He was a great man. We had a great support staff. I had never used a mess kit before I got to Korea. They brought out food out on trays when we camped out in basic. I was at Camp Chaffee. I was told I would go to school as soon as I was finished with basic. They were right. I had six weeks of basic training and I shudder to think if I had to go to combat what would have happened to me. I was not prepared.

Comments: I'm writing for my father - Daniel B. Sullivan MD (Cpt, USA Ret) - 2nd Battalion Surgeon in-country January 1951 - November 1951. My father speaks often of all of the wounded who went through his Battalion Aid Station, and I'm hoping there might be survivors out there who were treated by him and his men. He told me about a time early in his tour when a tank from the 6th Medium Tank Battalion was sent up to protect stretcher-bearers and corpsmen - and he evacuated the tank commander (Sgt Swinnard) for Heptitis. He also refracted eyes at the Battalion level. He's remained in medicine and recently retired from 35 years of cancer surgery. If possible, if anyoneout there knows of anyone who might have been treated in the aid station , please call me toll-free at 877-973-6242. Thanks!!

My Grandfather was 1st Lt. John B. Stanton, he was a pilot during WW.II,
and during the Korean Conflict. He was KIA in Oct. 1950, an airfield
was named after him in HEIJO, KOREA, "Stanton Army Airfield".
I am trying to find some information, and possibly current status of
this airfield. Can anyone help?
I would like to meet someone who may have served or even flown with my
grandad. He was one of 18 Eighth Army Liason pilot's, who flew with the
famed 24th Infantry Division, and was stationed in Japan. I have many
letter's from people like the Commanding General of the 24th Infantry
Div., Maj. Gen. John H. Church, the Commanding Officer of the 15th
Aviation Company, 1st Cavalry Division, APO 24, in Korea, Major Thomas
E. Thompson, and 2 Adjutant General's of the Army, Major General Edward
F.Whitsell and Maj. Gen. WM. E. Bergin.
From KWP
The Camp was designated on July 1, 1961. Later renamed Camp Stanton.
Originally called A-112 built by Marine Engineers in 1952.
