Comments: Looking for anyone whom might have known my grandfather, MSGT Clarence John Fisher, 23IR, Korea. I came across his Soldier's Medal and his award on 28JUL53 and would like to know anyone around that knew him. He passed away when I was 13 of cancer in 1990, but I was very close to him and was never old enough to talk to him about the war. Since then I have served 12 years in the Army, and always thought of him, every day.

Comments: My grandfather talks about his time in Korea quite often and wonders what became of some of the men he served with. His name is Samuel David Fields but was known to others as Smiley. He is from Kentucky (Pike County). He speaks of one gentleman quite often, Woodrow Wooten from Louisiana possibly. He has a few photos but can't seem to remember the names of those in the pictures. COMPANY E, 2nd Division, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Regiment. He was WIA 7/25/1952 along with a 2nd Lieutenant who was killed. My grandfather returned to action for a few days before being sent home. He remembers an enemy machine gun nest and Baldy. He recalls a Master Sgt. Lewis or Louis Palladino or Calladino (spelling?) who was possibly from Michigan. Any info you have of this time would be greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone my grandfather served with, that would make his day. Thanks!

Comments: (Forgive me, as I'm still gathering this information and it is as
accurate as I know so far...)

I just learned quite a bit about my father, Robert Newman, from
historical documents...
On Hill 1051 at Chaun-ni, Korea, on the 38th Parallel, Private
First Class Newman, along with 2200 other members of the 2nd
Infantry Division, 23rd Infantry Regiment, Company E, withstood
an attack that lasted 3 days (this would become known as The May
Massacre)...
My father and his 2200 fellow soldiers withstood an attack by
185,000 Chinese and North Korean soldiers...
After the command squad was wiped out, Private Newman rallied the
remaining soldiers in his squad and held off overwhelming
superior forces for 3 days until reinforcements could arrive...
During this horrendous fight, my father was wounded but kept on
fighting with his fellow heroes, as the enemy and friendly bodies
piled up around them...this battle is known as one of the
fiercest and deadliest battles in the history of warfare, as over
65,000 Chinese/North Korean soldiers were either killed or
wounded during the melee...
After the battle ended, my father was but one of 74 US soldiers
that survived the carnage...
Private Robert Newman was awarded the Silver Star for his heroic
bravery and sacrifice, after he returned, dusty and dirty, to the
lines a week later...he had spent 7 days after the battle behind
enemy lines (3 days as a Prisoner of War)...

This information, that I'm still uncovering, has brought
forgiveness and closure to my relationship with my father...

I forgive and love you, Dad.

Comments: My name is also Benjamin, and I am looking for any
information on my father, if he was a part of the
38th Inf Reg. He had earned a Purple Heart in action
during the Korean War, and received a Medical
discharge soon after. He has since passed; 21 May
2010, Casper Wyoming. Like many of the men that came
back, he said little of his experiance in country. I
had served in Ouijongbu from 94-95 and was proud to
wear the IndianHead and say Second to None.

I am again wearing the patch, but this time on my
right shoulder. I am a member of the NY National
Guard with the 27th B.S.T.B. out of Syracuse, oddly
enough where the 38th was organized in 1917. My unit
flys the RQ-7B Shaddow UAV, for the 3rd Brigade, 2nd
I.D. Again I'm saying Second to None to officers of
the 82nd and gladly pi$$ing them off!

As a child I recall a cigar box that had his uniform
items; cloth rank that was sewed on his uniform
sleave, Combat Infantry Badge (CIB), fortegerre, and
his Class A or B plastic name tag for the shirt or
jacket. I also recall several ribbons; Purple and
White (Purple Heart), an evenly striped blue and
white (UN), another blue and white ribbon (also UN),
and the Pres. Unit Citation with the Yin and Yang in
the center. The Unit Crest was also in there, and
that is where I am having the most trouble with. My
recolections are getting pretty vague.

I was able to get a replacement Purple Heart thru
proper channels, and have his records reflect this.
With the infamous Fire at Indianapolis back in
the '70s, there is nothing to go on that was
important to our Korean War Heros.

Is there anyone that can help me solve this puzzle?

Comments: Hello,
My dad, M/Sgt Francis Clifford -Buddy- Edelen, was a
Plt Sgt as far as I know in G Co., 2nd Bat, 23rd
Inf. Regt., 2nd Inf. Div.. He fought at Chinaman's
Hat and a few days later lost a leg at Kunu Ri Pass
during a rear guard action in Nov. of 1950. According
to the original newspaper clipping I have about it,
due to death and wounding of the officers, etc., he
wound up being 2nd in command under the Captain. I
would like to find anyone who knew him and fought
with him, or knew of him. Or who his captain was and
if he is still alive.
Sincerely,
David Edelen
Millbrook, Al.

Comments: My grandfather served I think 51-53. I remember going
to his war reunions when I was a teenager. His
company would have a reunion at a different place
every year we went for about 3-4 years. Unfortunately
being a little girl I was not interested in war
stuff, and of course I thought he was going to live
forever. So I did not get the chance to hear too many
stories. Things I wish I had now today. He died of
cancer in 1994. I know there are many books on Korea
out there but there is one in particular that he was
actually mentioned in. I am trying to find it. If
anyone has family or knows of this book could you let
me know? I would really like to find it. And if
anyone knew him or had family that served stories or
pictures would be appreciated.

Comments: My father commanded Fox Company, U.S. Army in Korea, On
October 8, 1951, he and his four officers led 90 troops
(including themselves). The North Koreans had mortars,
My father pleaded with the higher authorities not to go
on this suicide but was threatened. They went up the
hill, 30 men died from mortar fire. When he reached
one side he had only 39 men and two officers. Their
ammunition exhausted. He had to withdraw. He had 21
men and one officer left. Ammo and replacements came
1/2 hours later. My father was born in Ginatilan,
Cebu, Philippines and graduated with a Bachelor's of
Science degree at the University of Kansas. He was a
First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He served with General MacArthur in the Philippines.

ANYONE REMEMBER SGT. JERRY UNRUE?

Comments: I have a letter from Captain Robert C. Bowen
nominating my father, Jerry Unrue, for the bronze
star...'on 11, September 1951, Sgt Unrue, acting as
platoon sergeant, became engaged in hostile fire with
the Regular Troops of the NKA. One of his men, Cpl
Symmes became separated from the rest and was pinned
down. Symmes was severely injured and was calling
for help. Without regard for his own safety, Unrue
ran approximately seventy-five yards under enemy fire
to bring Symmes back to safety and then assisted the
medical team to stop the bleeding in his left leg,
which was later amputated. With only seven men left
who could bear their weapons, Sgt Unrue led the
attack to repel/and/or wound or kill thirty five to
forty of the enemy. He himself was knocked to the
ground on three or four instances in hand to hand
combat, but was able to continue...'

I did not find this letter from Capt. Bowen until my
father passed in 2010. General Orders 110, by order
of Col. Mergens. Bronze Star awarded.

Does anyone know anything about this incident?
