Comments: I am looking for anyone who may have served with my uncle, Joseph E. Kickasola. He served in the 40th Division, 224th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, I Company. I believe he was a 1st Sgt. He received a CIB with three battlestars. He arrived in Incheon Harbor on the U.S. Marine Adder. He is still living and I would love to track down some of his combat buddies. He mentioned Sgt. Walter Crider. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: I'm trying to put together a shadowbox of my husband's late grandfather from his time in the Army. CPL Robert "Bob" Coleman was assigned to active duty from 18 Nov 1952 to 17 Nov 1954. My husband and I believe he went to basic at Ft. Jackson. In Korea, he served with Co. H, 224th Inf. Regt., 40th Inf. Div. We have copies of letters home and pictures of him and his buddies, including Don Cook from Darlington, PA, and a man named Bloom, among others. His ship passed by Japan on the way to Korea. I'm having a hard time finding the patches he wore throughout his time in the Army and was wondering if anyone knew of a place I could order them. I've scoured military shops in the Ft. Bragg area as well as e-bay and am having a hard time finding any. I am able to identify 2 of the 3 he once wore on his uniform (the Ball of Fire of the 40th Inf. Div. and the 224th crest.) The patch I can't identify must have been the patch from his place of separation, Ft. George Meade, as it is currently on his uniform. It is a red shield with a gold border, 2 gold A's, and a gold tree-looking thing or lightning bolt down the middle of the A's. I'm also looking for the blue "Korea" tab that he wore above the Ball of Fire patch, which I think I've found on e-bay, in a picture. Any help would be very appreciated! My husband was very close with his grandfather, and I'd very much like to complete the shadowbox for him. Also, if anyone knew Bob and has any stories, my husband and I, along with his family, would love to hear them. Thank you for any help!

I just came across your entry on KWP and I thought I might be able to help. I am researching a medic who ran across a mine field while under fire to reach the the wounded members of a patrol on the 1st of December 1952, and was killed while performing emergency medical aid on them. It is very likely to have been Billie's patrol.
I have the names of the members of the 224th killed or injured that day. I tried sending emails via KWP (and koreanwar.org) but both bounced. If this information would be helpful please feel free to get in touch.

Comments: Looking for people and information concerning Henry Lee Holtzman (my father in law)from Fulda, IN. He doesn't talk much about Korea and I would like his daughter and grandchildren to know more about him. He is presently 78 years old and not likely to open up on his own. He carried a BAR in (I think) 2nd squad of Easy Company. He was a POW for a short time and traded back during a cease fire, dates unknown. Then transferred to driving six-by trucks. Anyone who knew him over there or has information about his service please contact me.

Comments: Greetings all, I am looking for information on my father who was wounded in Korea, April 28th, 1953. My father's name was Jack D. Johnson, and he was a Corporal. My father rarely talked about his wounds, but it's my understanding his Lieutenant had stepped on a land mine, killing him, and seriously wounding my father. I've been checking the causualty reports for Korea, and found 3 others who were in the same regiment and wounded or killed on that day. I believe the Lieutenant to be 2nd Lt. Robert G. Halay. from Pennsylvania. Also wounded in a similar report, from that day, and from that regiment was PFC Robert H. Strahan. He was from Indiana. Also wounded same day was Steinmetz, Robert N. He may have been a medic, as his branch of service given is Medical Department. I am looking for anyone who might remember my father, or this incident. I am pretty sure the LT. Halay is the man my father spoke of. The other two my not be related to the incident at all, but I have hope prehaps they were, or someone might remember my father and the incident. I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have, and would love to find someone who knew my father, or even had photo's of him. Thanks in advance.

Comments: This is worth a shot to me. I am looking for anyone who was in the same company as Billie Brackenbury. He was in company E. He was seriously wounded on Dec 1, 1952 and died on Dec 3, 1952. We know little about him while he was in Korea. I found out today that he was in Sata-Ri Valley, Korea. On the other documents that I have found online it says that he was wounded in North Korea. I dont know much about this war. I do know that Billie was close to an Otto Bivens. Who went to California because his father died and was never heard from again. My grandmother (Billie's sister), Margaret Brackenbury, wrote to Otto Bivens, a Harold Davis, and an Earl something. She does not remember his last name. Billie was only 19 when he died. We have a couple of pictures of Billie, one I see everytime I go to grandma's and its just a service picture. We have another one where he is with a Korean gal. From what I understand Billie wrote home and told his family that he was married to that gal. From talking with a few people they think it is highly unlikeable that he met and married this gal. I would really like to get in touch with anyone who knew him or knows of the others that I have mentioned above. Thank you.

Comments: Can anyone help me? My grandfather was in the 224th, 40th infantry RCT and he has a drawing of a military patch with a scull and cross bones and the words HV MORTAR inside a turqouise bullet across it. It is inside of a white shield with a blue and white chevron in the top left corner. The ribbon across the bottom says "224th INF RCT". I want to have it recreated into a large patch for him to put on a jacket with all of his old patches. I have been looking online for it but it doesn't seem to exist. All I can find is the blue diamond with the yellow star in it. Does anyone know where I can find it if it does exist? I want to give it to him for fathers day! Thank you!

Blair passed away on January 12, 2004 due to liver disease and complications from a fall in December. He has been interred at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Watertown, MA. He spent my life telling me war stories and I am the proud owner of a collection of letters home to his mother from his time in Korea. He was very proud of his service and the men he served with.
If anyone has any memories of him, our family would love to hear them. He left behind 4 children and 9 grandchildren who loved him dearly. Thank you.

Comments: I remember Edward Reick. He was a slim good looking, very nice and quiet young boy, who had joined the 224th Med Co. as a replacement in Korea. Unfortunately, he was assigned as a medic to a patrol on the very last day before we went into reserve. As I remember what was told to me at that time, a Platoon Leader (Lt.) was wounded and was in a bomb crater, so Reick went to his aid. Then a mortor round came down directly on top of them and both were killed with no remains. As I understood it, they were listed as Missing in Action because we were not able to find any remains. I was a Sgt. assigned as a medic in charge of the Ward Tent of the Collecting (Regimental) Aid Station and our aid station would normally receive all persons who were killed in the regiment, but I do not remember Reick's body coming through.
For all of us, we looked at him as a hero, who was doing his utmost to perform his duty as a medic, at the time of his untimely death. We all miss him.

Comments: Even though my father passed away in 1991, reading your newsletter and hearing about other veterans experiences brings me much comfort and in a round-a-bout way keeps my father alive. My father did not speak of his experiences while in Korea and for obvious reasons that I now understand. I'm sure being a sniper (or any war veteran) left a person fighting with their own personal morals and beliefs. To fight for your country whether here or abroad is the ultimate act of courage, loyalty and pride. I'm very proud of all our veterans.

Seeking someone who served with Otis Edward Olcott |

Nancy and John Ward wrote on 2000-11-28 19:18:01.0
Comments: My boyfriend's father (deceased 1978), Otis Edward Olcott, served with the 224th Infantry Reg. in the Korean War (total years in service 1/10/51-11/21/52), and we're trying to find out more about his military career, his time in Korea - where the 224th served, and someone who may remember him. We don't know which division he was in as a copy of Otis's DD-214 only indicates the 224th and under the list of medals, he did receive a Combat Infantry Badge (don't know if he would've received something additional had he been a radioman or truck mechanic).
My boyfriend was fortunate in that his dad didn't perish in the Korean War but Otis did pass on at an early age as did John'smother. I'd like to help him put some pieces together about his father as there is no one to contact on his paternal side. Since Otis died before John's own sons were born, he'd like to have something to pass along to them about their grandfather. That he served honorably in Korea when called upon by his country to do so - John's own sons ought to know that and feel proud of the grandfather they never knew. I'm also trying to ascertain if there are any photo IDs the military may have - or someone who served with Otis. We have no photos.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Ted; My Brother John Albert Cox did indeed enlist in Twin Falls, and he was in the Medical Company that was probably attached to the 224th Inf Regt. I visited him while we were both still in-country in the Spring of '52. Almost everyone in the company was a CO and straight arrow. him? hah! he got everyone else's beer ration and used it to trade for things. He carried a firearm when he was on patrol. To the best of my memory, he was awarded two Bronze Stars and a couple purple hearts.
After he finished his 4 year enlistment he went back to scool and got a PHD in Social Sciences. He attended Univ. of Utah, Univ. of Nebraska and UCLA.
