It is all I have to pass on to my Grandson but I have always been proud to be Frank Uhyrek's daughter. The men who trained me were soon to be rotated, and I was to be the teacher for incoming replacement. I was acting sergeant, acting First Sergeant, Acting Administrative First Sergent in the Hq and Hq Company. INFO ON THE 224TH INF. ON SNIPER RIDGE |
MICHAEL HARNER wrote on September 1, 2011 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: I've got an old canteen that my grandmother had when she had an antique shop here in Northern California about 30-40 years ago. It had a gold wedding ring attached and the canteen is inscribed. On the front says Korea, March 1952, Captain and under that is San Goo but not sure if this is a name or place?, Sniper Ridge, and on the back it says 224th I.F. "Sons of Hell". There is a word above this which has been mostly worn off but the last letters are I think "lc. e" Maybe was a name and it was probably a 3 or 4 letter word that ends in lc. It doesn't seem to be like any US canteen that I've ever seen. Has a wooden stopper and canvass straps. Anyone have any info on anything about Sniper Ridge or maybe this canteen? JON PECK wrote on December 28, 2009 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I'm Jon Peck, son of Don "Butch" Peck from Plainville Mass. My dad was in K Co, 224 Infantry. He was pretty recognizable as he only had two fingers on his right hand. I was recently going through some of his things (he passed in 1990) and found many pictures of his time at Camp Cooke. Fortunately, he did a good job of labeling his pictures. I have some pictures taken in Feb 51 of Ed Shilo (Norwood MA), Tex Lenard, Al Stearns, Ed Ronach, Mike Russitti, Sgt Kaye, Tom Shea, Pete Rappaha, and Nick Interdernado. No guarentees on the spellings! Also there are various other base photos (barracks, chapel, 40th Inf Div Sign, etc.) If you're interested in seeing them, please let me know. Thanks Jon Keywords: Camp Cooke, Don "Butch" Peck, Tex Lenard, Al Stearns, Sgt Kaye, Russitti, Ronach, Shea, Rappaha |

DANNY ROBB wrote on December 7, 2009 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Hello, My father in law is Roy Shiba. He served in the 224th HQ Company. He said that he started with the engineers and then became the driver and interpreter for the Hq Commander in Japan. I have a picture of him at Camp Cooke in 1950 before the unit deployed to Japan and then Korea. He does not have any other records and his service records were destroyed in the 1976 fire in St. Louis. I am trying to find a copy of orders or anything else to help establish his service. If you have anything or would like a copy of the picture. Please let me know. Thanks! Danny Keywords: HQ Company, Camp Cooke, Shiba |
