You stood up for what you believed in, but you ended up taking a fall for what you believed in I am guessing you wouldn't have changed a thing! Love Maureen

Comments: My father was S.F.C. Jerry Groom. He was in the 40th infantry Division, 223rd regiment. I believe he also fought at 'Heartbreak Ridge' 'Sandbay Castle Hill,' and the 'Punchbowl.' in or around October 1952. He passed away in 1993, but I'm interested in hearring any stories about him or his company. He would not talk about the war, I hear he was in a very dangerous group with a high casualty rate, but know little else. If you knew him I would like to hear any memories you might be able to convey to me. This would mean a lot to me as I idolized my father. He was one hell of a man. They don't make them like that any more. Thank you for your time. Jerry Groom II

I imagine he would have been quite a bit older than those he served with in the Korean area. Thank you for any information you may have. Thelma La Pontic

Comments: Many of the 223rd Regt veterans are not aware that the Original 223rd Infantry Regiment Association hosts a reunion every year. Our Association hosts reunions in different parts of the country to afford our members the opportunity to see this great country of ours. If you want to HOOK UP with old friends and meet new ones then I suggest that you attend one soon. Check the Reunion notices posted on this website and see where we be this year.

Comments: I joined the 223d Heavy Tank Company in August 1949 (at the ripe old age of 15). I lived in Baldwin Park and had to either hitch-hike or walk down the railroad tracks every Monday night to El Monte to get to the Armory for the weekly unit get-togethers. My Mother allowed me to go to Camp Cooke in September, 1950, when the 40th was added to the Federal military, but later decided that I was too young to go to Korea so she wrote to the C.O. and told him that he should send me home, which he did, in January, 1951, so I missed the trip to Sendai and Korea.
I seem to recall an incident when we were at Camp Cooke (now Vandenberg AFB).
A crew from our unit checked out a tank on a Saturday or Sunday (which we could do as long as we had a full crew). This crew went out into the boonies and evidently were stopped by some police who were looking for two escapees from the Federal Pen there at Lompoc. Our illustrious crew decided to help the police find these miscreants. Don't recall who, but one of the crew was in the "bogie" seat (right seat, down front) standing up on the seat, his left hand on the gun tube and his right hand on top of the open hatch, and the story has it that they hit a small sapling, which bent over and then snapped back, hitting the guy's hand in such a way as to either totally, or partially, cut off one of his fingers. It was rumored that they stopped their hunt for the criminals. Just learned about the reunions being held and plan on coming to the one in 2005. I really don't recall any names other than the First Sergeant (Galceran) and the C.O. (Thompkins).
I enlisted in the Air Force in Jan , 1952 and ended up as a "lifer" retiring in 1973, with 22+ years of combined service.

Comments: My father in law, Jim Allen Allred, Private First Class, passed away in August 2003. I'm trying to find out anything I can about him and the 40'th division. He didn't talk about his time in Korea much till he was nearing death. My husband is very much interested in finding out as much as he can. All we know is he served the 40'th division Jan 51 till Nov 52. We had no idea he was in the infantry, and on the front lines till a couple of months before his death. How can we determine what regiment he was in. All we know is he was in Korea and he talked of the bitter cold. My husband said he mentioned taking over a hill. We only wish he would have talked more of it while he could. We have sent off and received several medals he had due him and we are trying to honor him in anyway we can. Any help would be appreciated. Charlotte Allred

Comments: See this web site for a photo and short story: http://www.geocities.com/slmaps/Carroll.html
"Crew Brave Red Gunfire to rescue wounded GI's!"
With 40th Infantry, Korea. Delayed by "Mail (Special)". Eight tanks rolled though a valley of frozen rice paddies, inched out from behind a hill, and rumbled into "no man's land" to attack Communist positions.
After 16 months of training, the 223rd Infantry Regiment's Tank Company, El Monte Unit of Southern California's 40th National Guard, was entering it's "baptism of fire".
With a platoon of doughboys the El Monte Unit supplied the fire power of a tank-infantry combat patrol team. All the principals of team work learned in training (at Camp Cook, California and Honshu Island, Japan) were employed as the infantry probed enemy lines under supporting fire from the tanks big guns.
After two enemy bunkers had been destroyed and an estimated 25 Chinese killed, the patrol was ordered to withdraw. Tank crews braved the intense enemy mortar and small arms fire to carry 12 wounded infantrymen back to friendly lines.
The damage from the "bogy" and Chinese mortar to the tanks, included a broken track suffered by "Vat 69" and a large hole in the side where the suspension had been blown out. The men could not evacuate the tank for what seemed like hours. The tank company was commanded by 1st Lt. Allison E. Bryan of the Chatsworth. Although immobilized by a land mine explosion, "Vat 69" maintained fire support. Then after the infantrymen had been evacuated, three tanks returned to retrieve the damaged vehicle.
Cpl. Stanley Carroll, bow gunner (and assistant driver) sat behind a 30 caliber machine gun, in "Vat 69". He lost his seat when the mine exploded. The escape hatch and seat simply dropped out from under him. "It's like somebody gave me a good wallop" Stanley Carroll recalled. A buddy, Cpl. Richard James of Baldwin Park cut in: "Aw, so what! You're always sitting down anyway."
A tank commander, Sfc. Richard J. Odd (of El Monte) brought his tank to the base of the Chinese held hill and with Pfc. Robert Blair (of Baldwin Park) rescued a group of infantrymen.
Pfc. John T. Dulyen of Port Hueneme (a Navy aid man in WWII) helped medics administer first aid, until all the wounded had been evacuated.
*Company commander Capt. Thomas B. Walson of Fort Knox, KY. (first reserve officer to join the 40th Division) was proud of his men (a tank platoon leader with the Fifth Armored Division in Europe during WWII). Walson said: "They did a fine job on their first mission. I'm glad they're my men!"
**When the hatch blew, the seat went flying, a hole torn in the suspension and Carroll shot up off his seat! It is here Stanley Carroll adds a little humor here: "My buddy Albert Natchy, owed me $5.00 bucks from and old bet. It was then Al looked around and said: "I guess I won't have to pay Carroll back the $5.00 now".
We have posted this site for our friend Stanley Carroll. He will get any notices sent to this e-mail: slmaps@yahoo.cpm

I know he was in Korea during the winter and spring of 1952 with E company of the 223rd, and was wounded on 6/14/52. He was later sent to Far East Command. He often speaks of his return home in December of '53. A group of troops flew into Washington state, and from there was divided into two planes. Somewhere over the Rocky Mountains they ran into a storm, and the plane he was on was the only one to make it through. He saying the pilot rejected all orders to stay on course, and flew over the storm. He would like to get in touch with this brave man, and thank him for the life he allowed him to live. Anyone Remember This? |

FRANK O. Pruitt wrote on 2002-12-19 10:26:41.0
Comments: Hello, Ed:
I was looking at your question, "Anyone remember this?" in the 223rd Inf. Reg. unit section of the Korean War Project site. Well, I certainly remember the event. I was Company Commander of Tank Company the night we replaced the 5th RCT Tank Company with our tanks in the Punch Bowl and on Heartbreak Ridge. I don't specifically remember the loudspeaker welcoming the 40th, but I do remember them erecting a painted sign which said, "Welcome to the 40th Division". We underwent a terrific mortar barrage as the tanks were walked into place, and later that night, there were several limited objective attacks on the lines near where our tanks took up their positions.
In 1998, I wrote a book entitled Reminiscence of a Forgotten War, and a chapter in the book deals with that episode. As a result of the book, I was contacted by numerous veterans of the 40th Division who had read the book. Some inquired if a 40th Infantry Division tour to Korea was in the works. Subsequently, I contacted Roy Montgomery of California Pacific Tours, a veteran Korean War Association tour operator. Roy has put together an interesting trip, which is fully detailed in the brochure which I'm sending under separate cover.
Another result of my first book was a follow-up book which I have just written, entitled Delayed Letters From Korea. This book is made up of the individual stories of 35 Korean War veterans, whose stories are now told. It is available through 1st Books at www.1stbooks.com/bookview/10836 or by calling 1-800-839-8640. The book has just been published. I'm anxious to hear what the reaction is.
Frank Pruitt

Am looking for information that I can use to trace the lineage of the Troop back through the Korean War years (I know the Troop is a descendant of the 185 IR & then the 139 Tnk Bn. before the CAV). If anyone could provide the assistance, I would appreciate it.
Would also like to know if the 3rd Platoon was "officially" authorized the PUC for action in the Philipines in WWII; was told we were, but have not been able to find anything official.
Thanks for the assistance with this, but more importantly: THANKS FOR WHAT YOU GUYS DID IN KOREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments: 40th division, 223rd Infantry regiment. Anyone out there remember this? In the dead of night our Tank Company replaced another TankCompany on line. We rumbled up a mountain road being as quiet as a tank could be, which wasn't very quiet. When we were in position, and things quieted down, then, all of a sudden, we were treated to a loud speaker coming from the enemy side, booming with words in English, that went something like this, "Welcome 40th Division, glad you are here! We wonder how your wives and girlfriends are doing back home? Don't you wish you were back home too?" Ed Tessmer zartess@aol.com

I went to the Wi. Korean War Memorial in Aug'02 to pay my respects to all of you! I was with a few more of our good guys right before they shipped over seas---was not fun for those of us left back home. It most likely changed our lives, too! Reading through his letters, I know all of the places I have been seeing on these web sites---He (Jim) does not have a computer and has lost his wife of 46+ years and night now does not want to be reminded of bad things. Thank you for having such sites as I've seen---hopefully, someday, I can show them to him. I'm in Traverse City Mi---he is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I feel that he is farther away than when he was in Korea! If any of his buddies from those days sees this-- e-mail and I will give you his address. An Old "Girlfriend" Sue Hall suzyh432@Yahoo.com

Comments: My first question is, was there a 23rd Regiment in the 40th Division, or is it only (along with the sister regiments) the 223rd?
My uncle once told me he was a member of 40th ID, in the 23rd Reg, 3rd Battalion, K and HQ companies. He was in Korea.
His name is David Snipes and he was a 2nd Lt. promoted to 1st Lt. on the ship home from Korea.
Does anyone out there know him? He will tell me nothing of his experiences. I truly wish to know more about what his units did during the war. I only found out the above units yesterday.
Many thanks, Mark

Comments: I am trying to find information on my father's time served in Korea with the 223rd, K Company, between 1950 and 1952. He didn't like to speak about it, but gave me an album with photos, news articles, letters, maps, name and address lists, etc.
If anyone recognizes his name or knew him (GEORGE L. BROWN), I would really appreciate anyone sharing their memories. He passed away 3 years ago, and this will help me to put this part of his life to rest. How does a daughter go about requesting (or ordering) her father's medals and badges? I don't think he ever tried to obtain them himself.
And finally...where does a person find info on how to decipher his "Report of Separation"? All those acronyms have completely baffled me for years!
All of this information will help me to pass a part of his life history on to my children, his grandchildren. I think it is very important to remember the service of our Veterans, and to pass on their stories....and our gratitude.
THANKS, Linda L. Brown

Comments: I am very proud to have served in the 40th Infantry Division. I will never forget the men I served with on those extremely cold mountains in Korea.
We lost some fine young guys over and I sometimes wonder what they would be doing now, had they survived that war.
I regret not going to see their parents, it may have given some comfort to them, at that time. Unfortunately most or all of their parents are gone.
