MARILYN ATKINSON wrote on October 22, 2012 City and State: GUIN AL Unit: 223 INFANTRY 440TH DIV M COMPANY Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My uncle is curious about any of the soldiers names listed above who served with him in Korea from March 1951 til Jan 1952. He is in poor health but has a very vivid memory. He has shared some of his war stories with me and I am both fascinated and humbled at the price these men paid for my freedom! God bless you all! If you know him or can tell us the whereabouts of any of these men, we would greatly appreciate it! My Uncle fought on the front lines and then was taken off and given a position as a cook in the mess hall. His unique twist of southern seasoning, earned him favor in the eyes of his superiors and he advanced in rank rather swiftly for his dedicated service, and delicious meals he prepared for his fellow soldiers. He is an amazing person and I would love to be able to share the whereabouts of any of these names he has given me to inquire about. Please contact me if you have any information to share. KELLY HORST wrote on April 10, 2010 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father was Frederick L. Horst and he passed away on 22 December 2009. Though we new he served in Korea dad never talked about his time there. I have his DD214 which states that he was assigned to Co. E, 223rd Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division (no Battalion nor Platton information given). His Korea Service time was from 22 January 1952 to 3 October 1952. He received the following awards: Army Occupation Medal (Japan); Korea Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star; United Nations Service Medal; and the Combat Infantry Badge SO 25 HQ 223 Inf Regt. For his MOS it lists 1745. On the Korean War Educator site there are the following descriptions listed for 1745: Infantry first sergeant; Light weapons infantry leader; Light weapons platoon sergeant; Light weapons squad leader; Mortar section or squad leader, 60-mm; Rifle section or squad leader, 57-mm; Security platoon sergeant; Security squad leader; When dad entered the service on 8 November 1950, he was a Private E1. When he separated from the service on 27 October 1952 he was a MSGT (T), date of rank 8 May 1952. We fully understand the ramifications of how and why he rose in rank so quickly in such a short amount of time. Whenever any of us kids would ask about his time in Korea he would always shrug it off except to say that he "just" pulled a lot of guard duty and how bitterly cold it was. He would then proceed to change the subject. My older brother said that at one point before our grandfather passed away he said that dad was a sniper during the war but would not go into further detail about it. Sorry but though I myself am prior service (Army), I don't know enough about how the infantry is structured. Does anyone know what Echo (Easy) Company's mission was? Was it Light Weapons, Mortar Section, Rifle Section, Security? Is there anyone out there that remembers my dad? By the way, I have this great panoramic photograph of dad's unit prior to their departure from California. The photo is approximately 30" x 8 1/2". There are 169 individuals in the photo. The caption reads Camp Cooke (sic), California 1950. On the right end of the picture is the company flag with 2 rifles arched over 223 E. Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. ANYONE REMEMBER SFC JERRY GROOM |
JERRY GROOM II wrote on August 13, 2008 City and State: CAROGA LAKE NY Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father was S.F.C. Jerry Groom. He was in the 40th infantry Division, 223rd regiment. I believe he also fought at 'Heartbreak Ridge' 'Sandbay Castle Hill,' and the 'Punchbowl.' in or around October 1952. He passed away in 1993, but I'm interested in hearring any stories about him or his company. He would not talk about the war, I hear he was in a very dangerous group with a high casualty rate, but know little else. If you knew him I would like to hear any memories you might be able to convey to me. This would mean a lot to me as I idolized my father. He was one hell of a man. They don't make them like that any more. Thank you for your time. Jerry Groom II Keywords: Punchbowl, Sandbay Casle, Heartbreak Ridge |
