SIGNIFICANT HAPPININGS WHILE I WAS THERE 68-69 |
| PAUL CHICHESTER wrote on October 30, 2011 City and State: ATLANTA Unit: 21 T CAR- 8TH ARMY HQ, CHIEF OF STAFF, 40TH ENG GR Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: While I was there, President Eisenhower died, EC121 shot down by North Koreans we were working overtime at the Crypto shack trying to keep the South Koreans from going North to deal with it, crew of the Pueblo released, (friend of mine from high school in Oregon was a prisoner, he told me they were beat on the bottom of their feet with 2X4s so it would not show after the middle finger incident). Oh, and the Youngson PX burned down, lots of good deals after the fire. Another incident that never came to light,,,Warrant officer that was in charge of the motor-pool shot up the neighborhood with a machine gun, no one hurt and he was never reprimanded. One of the neatest things I ever saw, was the Korean presidential guard came by one day on 12 old white Harleys, they were all over 6 feet tall, dressed in orange jump suits and all had old Korean war grease guns strapped to their backs. And I had no camera. When you were an aid in the HQ building you ate in the Generals mess, three times a day with a menu for all meals, breakfast was fantastic, steak and lobster at least once a week, no one stamped your ration cards for beer and you knew about MPC changes before they happened. You pulled no duty of any kind, life was good. Keywords: |

21ST CAR TRANSPORTATION COMPANY 8TH., ARMY HEADQUARTER COMPOUND 1953-1954 |
| JOHN E. ROULANAITIS SR. wrote on October 21, 2007 City and State: WEST FRANKFORT IL Unit: 21ST., TRANSPORTATION CAR COMPANY Service or Relationship: OTHER Comments: I was assigned to the driver's pool at the Hartell House, located within the eastern half just across the MSR that went through the eastern part of the main compound of Headquarters, which provided lodging for visiting upper level brass and civilian white collars. I also drove KMAG visitors and their staff on occasions. My most rememberable asignment was driving Debbie Reynolds from K-16 to the Officer's mess hall on the Headquarters Compound. Thereafter, a Major, from special services, called the 21st Motor Pool for a seperate sedan to be assigned to Ms. Reynolds while she was in the Headquarters Compound. I returned to the Hartell House Driver's Pool and watched the parade of the Reynolds' Troup travel from one event to another. I was used to shuttle visitors all over immediate area of Seoul, K-16, I Corp, 24th., 7th., and once to the DMZ. Where I once drove General Clark from the US Embassy, in down town Seoul, to the US side of the truce talk area. I drive a specially marked OD 1951 Chevy with a white roof and hood. I picked up an MP escort around I Corp and followed them into the truce talk area. At US Camp on the DMZ I was near enough to see Charlie siding on the other side. While waiting for the General to conduct he assignment, I was granted permission to look through the scopes to get a really close-up look at Charlie.
