Besides my father, some of the people mentioned were: Sgt William K Dodge of Denver, PFC Charles H Gutherie of Bensonville, Ill., Sgt Archie Ashworth of Beaumont, Tx., Cpl John Andrews, Pfc James Renbold of Phoenix. The article was written by Peter Kalischer who it appears was embedded with the unit. Any of these names ring a bell to anyone? Would love to see pics of this group if there are any out there.

Capt. Jerome Dolan in Iconic Photo

Richard Morris wrote on 2007-09-17 16:35:24.0

Comments: A 1941 alumnus of our school just passed away: Dr. Jerome A. Dolan. His obit speaks of his heroic service thusly: At the outbreak of the Korean War he was dispatched as a battalion surgeon with the 89th Cavalry Regiment/1st Cavalry Division. He was the first American physician to cross the 38th parallel... His unit had been surrounded, cut off... Capt. Dolan's valiant service was captured in an iconic photograph taken behind enemy lines and featured in publications back in the states. Wearing his helmet and poncho, Capt. Dolan and his chaplain dodged bullets in a monsoon as they slogged thgouth deep mud to escort a shell-shocked soldier off the battlefield." Being that the photo is labeled asICONIC, is it possible that you've hear of or seen this photo. I'd like to reprint it with an account of his bravery in the next edition of our alumni magazine. If you can point me in any helpful direction our school community would be grateful.

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Richard Amadon wrote on 2005-05-30 00:00:00.0

Comments: IF ANYONE KNEW DICK OR THE DETAILS OF THE INCIDENTS REFERRED TO BELOW, PLEASE EMAIL ME. THANK YOU SO MUCH

I am Richard (Dick)G. Amadon, named after the uncle that I never met. I was born in 1953, and my Dad gave me his brother's name. Dick joined the Marine Corps on December 28, 1943. He served in the Pacific Theater for two years. He also served with the occupation forces in Japan. He was discharged as a corporal on May 23, 1947. Dick later joined the Army, on August 26, 1947. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, the Calvary was ordered there. The last word the Amadon family had from Dick was on August 29, 1950, in a Western Union Telegram. The telegram said, "Writing in detail. Please don't worry. Best wishes to all ay home." A few weeks later, the family received the telegram from the U.S. Government. Richard had been killed in combat. He suffered a fatal grenade wound to the chest, Sept 12, 1950. I believe that he was killed near Taegu, during the defense of Pusan/Naktong. A memorial to the Korean War has been erected in Uncle Dick's hometown of East Templeton, MA, and the memorial is named after him (Amadon Park), the first serviceman from the area to lose his life in Korea. I've always been proud to have been named after Dick, but also sad that I never met him. Someday.

I am not sure of much else because he never talked about the war. We have his medals, and I have quite a few pictures of him with his buddies in Korea. There are names on the back of the photos. My dad was an extremely private man so I don't want to put his full name down. His first name was Elmer, and he was from Philly. I wish he could have lived long enough to search sites like this. Sadly he died before the monument was dedicated in Philly. He was looking forward to it. Thank you all for keeping us safe at home. I would be interested if anyone was in Korea at the same time as my dad. Thank you.

Comments: Hi, I am searching for information concerning my father who died in a military aircraft accident, in the Sea of Japan, February 1954. He had been assigned to 1st Cavalry as a military police sergeant in Korea but after the conflict was assigned to Misawa AFB in Japan. The plane crashed on a flight from Misawa to Korea with all hands lost. His name was Glen Vernon Collins; POB Liberal, Kansas; HOR: Twin Falls, Idaho or Seattle, WA. There are very few military records because of the fire therefore it has been extremely difficult to obtain information. I am retired from the US Army but never served in Korea. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Comments: Wanted to find someone who served with my grandfather in Korea. His name is John Oree. From his uniform picture I can see that he was in the 1st Cav Division. His records were lost in fire at National Records Center, so I don't know exact time period he served in Korea. From his discharge form I can see he was awarded Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars which means he was there for awhile.

Now that my grandfather is deceased I can't ask him anymore about what he and his fellow soldiers experienced. I miss him and wish he were alive to see that America has started to acknowledge the sacrifice that he and other Americans made during the so called "Forgotten War". Any info is greatly appreciated.

Mike Owens wrote on 2001-05-08 08:42:42.0

Comments: I'm looking for any information anyone might have on my great-uncle Cpl. Gene L. Owens. Gene was in the First Cavalry and originally served on the DMZ (guard duty) before the war broke out. He was wounded on Sunday, Aug. 13th 1950 and taken prisoner. I heard his POW camp was liberated, but I'm not sure how. I would love to talk to anyone who served with him and knew where and how he was wounded.

I was hoping anyone could let me know where I could search on the internet or at the library to find out more information on Gene and his unit. Does the Government have a web site that I can search?

I would appreciate any help on this matter. By the way, I am writing a book about the war and need this information.

Sincerely, Mike Owens

Comments: My military records were lost in the 1973 fire at the St.Louis records Center. I am trying to reconstruct my own records. Is there any place where I can find records of when I arrived at the 1st Cavalry Division, which was then stationed on Hokkaido Island and when I was transfered out of the Division after arriving in Korea. I would also like to know which Regiment and Company I was with. My guess is that I arrived on Hokkaido in mid August, 1952. I participated in a mock invasion of North Korea that I belive was called "Operation Feint". We actually landed in South Korea where we stayed for a short time. New members of our unit were transfered to line outfits and the veterans went back to Hokkaido. I then served with the 5th RCT. I enjoyed my brief stay with the 1st Cavalry Division. The machine gun platoon Sgt. and his assistant were two of the best that I would encounter during my two years of service.
