Does Anyone Know John J Hemenway? |

Lynn Theresa Francisco (Nee Hemenway) wrote on 2009-09-06 22:39:03.0
Comments: Does anyone know or have any information in regards to my Uncle John J Hemenway. He was from Linden NJ, and was killed in Korea at the Kum River. I am looking to find out more information on him, and a possible child that he could have. He served in Germany, and then then elected to go to Korea where he lost his life. He was my grandfathers brother, and a hero to our family and our country, and I would love to be able to put the final chapters of his life together. Any help would be awesome. God Bless you all..

Comments: My Uncle was KIA on 11/05/50. I am searching for any information related to the location of the 19th Infantry Regiment at the time of his death. He was buried in Korea and his body was not returned until 1953. The circumstances surrounding his death are unknown and any information would be very much appreciated. I understand that organizational changes have occured in the Army so even information regarding the size and geographical separation or proximity of a Regiment would be appreciated. I served 23 Years in the Air Force and have retired from the service. It is important to me that I try to pass on to my sons as much as I can about their Great Uncle. I appreciate any information you may be able to provide.
God Bless,

DON BAILEY - 19TH INFANTRY REGIMENT & 24TH MED BATT OF THE 24TH MEDICAL DIVISION |
 |
 |
Don Bailey wrote on 2008-07-22 14:51:35.0
Comments: I was in the heavy duty mortar company located beside the barracks of Company A at Chickamauga. I knew many fellows in Company A because we were stationed in Chickamauga for some time. I transferred to the 24th Medical Battalion in Kokura, Japan, and I did not see any more of those fellows until our medical battalion was attached to the 19th Infantry Division in Korea. I was an ambulance driver and we shuttled back and forth from the front lines to bring the wounded back to our aid station. It was during one of my trips back from the front lines that we were halted by machine gun fire. At that time the 19th Infantry was retreating from the combat zone. This was on July 16, 1950. My ambulance was destroyed by enemy fire and when the 19th Infantry regiment arrived at the place where my ambulance was destroyed, one of the fellows from A Company of Camp Chickamauga commandeered a tank and the tank was disabled. We had to move back to the ditch line which ran alongside the road. One of the commanders of the 19th Infantry Regiment gave orders for us to load up in the trucks of the 19th Infantry Regiment and once we got loaded the North Koreans began machinegunning the truck and the soldier from the 19th Infantry Regiment A Company whose name I cannot remember was lying on top of me and was mortally wounded. If it had not been for him, I would not be alive. If I could see his picture, I would know him immediately, or any other pictures of guys from A Company. Roy Atkins, a childhood playmate of mine, also was in A Company. At the time I was at Chickamauga the company commander of the mortar company which was adjacent to A Company was Capt. Green. If you have any pictures of Company A at that time, perhaps I could recognize and name some of those fellows. There was also a Sgt Brown from my heavy mortar company; Robert Bailey (no relation) was with me at Chickamauga (from CT). He and I were good friends. Roger Bacon, also from CT, was with me at Kokura - I do not remember if he was at Chickagmauga. Please excuse my disjointed way of describing events - I am doing it as it comes to mind I would enjoy hearing from anyone who might remember me or any of the men I have named.

 |
John Charles Hyslop wrote on 2008-06-22 13:01:39.0
Comments: I am looking for any information anyone may have about Cpt (Chaplain) Kenneth Hyslop - my father. He was stationed with the 19th in Beppu, Japan from 1949, was committed with the 19th to Korea, leaving on 1st July 1950. He was captured about 4th November 1950 and died in captivity about 12th December 1950. Any information is much appreciated. I have found letters he wrote from the front, mentioning people and events and the heat and cold and mosquitoes and dirt -- and then the letters ended.

Were you in the fall push 1951 - Kumsong? |
 |

Merry Helm wrote on 2007-05-16 11:48:30.0
Comments: I'm doing in-depth research on the men and events of October 1951 when the 24th Division made a major push to take Kumsong and push the Chinese from their winter line. This research has helped further the quest to gain posthumous Medal of Honor for Master Sergeant Woodrow "Woody" Keeble, also known as Chief, 1st Platoon, George Company, 19th Inf Reg (we are much closer to achieving this goal and expect positive results very soon).
I continue to find veterans who took part in that battle, and if you were among those who participated, I would really like to talk to you. It was a brutal operation, and many men still have difficulty speaking about it. Thank you for all you did over there.
Respectfully,
Merry Helm

Comments: I am trying to find out some information on a ring that I was given by my uncle whom is now deceased. I guess you would say it is nickle plated. It appears to be man made, it has a cross on the top of which is kinda like an offset on the ring, it has a colored stone in the middle of the cross-looks like topaz maybe, to the left of the stone is "U" and to the right of the stone is "N"..., beneath the stone are the letters "UN", on the right side of the ring is the word "Korea" and on the left side is the year "1951". My uncle was not in any type of service, he had no children nor siblings, so therefore it is impossible to find out any information. Would love to hear from anyone that may know the history behind this, if any.

I found one of my brothers Gene C. Waldrop but I could not find the other that was seriously wounded. He drew 100% disability from the VA all his life. His name was Leon C. Waldrop USMC. I had 2 brothers in the Vietnam War including myself. The 4 brothers that were in Korea has passed away and I sent to St. Lewis and got all of their Military Records. I feel that they were all Heros.

Comments: hi, im still interested in finding information on my grandfather Sgt.Verlin Martin, he was also known as "Marty". He served in the army between 1950-1953. He was stationed at Fort Chaffee Arkansas in 1953 after being wounded by a gernade in korea in 1951. It says he was near Chip'o-ri Korea in April of 1951. He was a platoon sergeant and a light weapons infantry man. He was orignally from Huntington, West Virginia before going into the army and later moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas after meeting my grandmother. It would really help me if anyone had any information i could learn about my grandfather since he is no longer with us. Im sure he was liked by many.

My Grandmother and I filled out a form for his Individual Death Record (always forget if thats the file's actual name) but it doesnt really say how he died. There have been "rumors" that he was killed execution style, other "rumors" he was shot many times in the back, or in the neck...in other words still no actual confirmation of cause of death...also no word on the man the army had escort my Uncle's body home...I'm also writing this to find out if anyone has photos of my Uncle Joe or maybe of his unit...maybe you dont remember him but he may be in photos of your unit. Thank you all again. Lizz Ross

Comments: I am interested in any information I can receive regarding people who might remember action of Oct. 19, 1951. The many friends of Ralph W. Frederick would like to get the recognition he deserves. Anyone who remembers a member of the unit named "Gullert," please contact me. He and Ralph were both hit early in this engagement and Ralph saved his comrade. He was recommended for a decoration, but the confusion of battle and the dispersal of witnesses has made it difficult to reconstruct the details. I am a good friend of Ralph, and I would like to have him receive the recognition he deserves for his heroism in saving a wounded comrade under fire, while he was wounded as well.

But, I do know that he was in the area of (BEPPU)-HOT SPRINGS,JAPAN. I have a purple flag that came back with his body it has numerous things on it : like one is a big golden eagle and atop the eagle the only words that are visible are OF MY STAY IN JAPAN, the flag is really tatterd and torn so there words missing, there are several other things on the flag as well. was told that he was a flag carrier and medic and that he was studing to be a doctor. Also was told the flag was possibly a japanese flag by the things I describe to a curator of a museum. but that they did not know anything else ! PLEASE HELP ME ! for there is very little information available about 1949. I am running out of places to look ! I would like to know how he died, what his infantry was ,where he died and anything else anyone might know about him ANY INFORMATION would be gratefully appreciated. Comments: Refer to my message dated November 11, 1998 I hadn't relized it until to-day, that the reason I wasn't getting any responses to my message is that my e-mail address had changed shortly after I send in that message. To-day, I was reading messsages on this web-site, and seen the reason why. I must say, one has to pay more attention, or get left behind on the fast track.

Comments: Hello...I received a picture yesterday of my grandfather receiving a Bronze Star for his service in Korea. There is no date on the photo and it doesn't give much information. Presenting the medal was the 19th Infantry Regiments Commander Lt.Col. P.W. Garland. The photo, from the Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Jackson, Mississippi, says that SFC Ryan has been on frontline duty for 8 months and arrived in July. Does anyone have any information at all about the medal my Grandfather was receiving? I believe he also received several other medals, my Grandmother gave them all to me but I have no details. I would love to know more about Papaw's military service. Thank you...

Comments: We are working on a film documentary of ND's most decorated soldier, M/Sgt Woodrow Keeble -- also known as Woody or Chief. Big guy, very strong, a member of the Sioux tribe of North/South Dakota.
We are searching for people who served with or knew Keeble or have photographs of him. He served in WWII in the South Pacific, starting at Guadalcanal, NDNG 164th. Re-entered service in 1950 and fought in Korea with Co. G, 19th Inf Regt, 24th ID. Led 1st Platoon in Operation Nomad. Silver Star at Hill 585, on or about Oct 15-18, 1951. Distinguished Service Cross on Oct 20, 1951 at Hill 770 for leading 3 platoons, then single-handedly taking out three pillboxes on above hillside. Mst Sgt Keeble was twice recommended for the MOH for this action, but the paperwork was twice lost.
The family continues to seek this honor for him. Please, if you have any information, contact me.

He died in a death march, probably not long after that. I believe his

January Readers Digest article.
Does anyone have information about my uncle? Also, I am looking for
information on several men of the 19th regmt.
Edwin Ryan, a chaplain's asst. was a buddy of my uncle before the

I am also interested in contacting the family of Rev. Herman Felhoelter

I also would like any info on Eugene Gawlick, who may also have

He started in Co. A, but ended up in Head & Head Co. He was captured
at the Kum River on July 16, 1950 and died in the Death March on
November 4, 1950. Edwin Ryan was a kind man who sent some very welcome
letters to my grandmother when Anthony was MIA.
More:I have also pursued this line of questions through the
Tiger Survivors organization. A man named Shorty Estabrook gave me
some info. The only difference is that according to him, Johnson's
list shows my uncle as dying on a death march between Mampo-jin and

I am searching for information concerning my Uncle, PFC Kenneth "Nelson"
Handy, KIA on 5 Nov 1950 while assigned to the 24th INF DIV/19th INF REG
Would like information concerning the Units movement the first week of
Nov 1950. I understand he may have been KIA in the vicinity of the Yalu.
I am looking for any information concerning his unit's location during
contact and the events that led to the abrupt casualty rates. My mother
has letters that he wrote home from Japan while in route to Korea and
one while he was aboard ship. These do not allude to an awareness of
what would befall him shortly after his arrival in Korea.
Also trying to determine the duty description for MOS 04812. Thank you.

More:
I arrived in Korea just before Christmas 1950, I think it was Christmas
Eve. Near the date of Jan/02/1951, I remember myself and several others
were moving up to the battle front on a truck load of ammunition. This
was at the time when our armed forces were retreating to Defense
Line "D".
The truck sled off the road, rolled over, injuring us all. That could of
been near that date Jan 02. I was treated at the Headquarters Aid
Station as released. I was told by the medical officer, I would receive
a Purple Heart. As far as I know I never received that one.
In the first week of February 1951, my unit the 19th. Inf. Reg. which
included my company "C" company, was involved in the "Operation
Thunderbolt" battles, near Ichon, Korea. This operation was from
February 1-11 1951. It was here were I was wounded, it most likely could
have been on Feb 02 1951. I no longer remember the dates. For this I
also received a Purple Heart.
I was evacuated to a rear aid station, from there flown by aircraft
to Pusan, South Korea, where I was hospitalized on a Hospital Ship.
(I think the name was) Hospital Ship Consolation. I believe my stay
there was nearly three weeks, before I returning to my unit the 19th Inf
Reg back on the front lines.
I sometimes wonder what were the names of all these small villages I
went through during my time in Korea.
