Comments: Would like to hear from anyone that was there at this time. Was a 19 yr old green boy from the country, Memphis, TN. ordered and picked up supplies. all the food we ate from the Marines, also found a Korean ice house and supplied ice for officer and nco club. If any of the officers remember I was the one who found the inter spring bedding you slept on. Lots of memories, but we all are growing old.

Comments: Sometimes it's hard to figure out who was what and who did what in Korea during 1951 up to the signing of the peace negotiations.

Jim Foreman and I are trying to add info. so you can understand what ENGINEER AVIATION BATTALIONS were and what they did.

The 1903rd EAB was part of the 417th Engineer Aviation Brigade. This Brigade was an Army unit working (attached to) the Air Force. The words SCARWAF sometimes seen, simply means Army attached to Air Force.

Here's how SCARWAF was activated in Korea.

417th Engineer Brigade 903th Engineer Aviation Group 622nd Maintenance Company

931st Engineer Aviation Group 809th and 811th Batallion 919th Maintanance Company

934th Engineer Aviation Group 802nd and 839th Engineer Aviation Batallion

336th, 840th, 841st and 1903rd Eng. Aviation Batallion 733rd Maintenance Supply Point Company 420th Topography Batallion

All the above Groups, Companies and Batallions were attached to the 417th Engineer Brigade which was in charge of building, repairing and maintaining airfields (airbases) in Korea during the war.

Initially the Marines were using bases/airfields in Korea which were constructed by the Navy or were left over Japanese Airfields from World War II. When the Air Force went to Korea, the airfields needed to be made bigger and longer for jet aircraft. Many bases were built or totally rebuilt depending on the aircraft stationed at that base.

If you, your relative or someone was attached to any of the above listed units, they were a person in the Army, working for the Air Force building or fixing the airfields in Korea.

I've found on this site notes from guys who were in Co"A" and or "C" and I know I was in Co "B" that same time because I still have my authorization cards signed by the Commanding Officer. Daniel Powell wrote on 2004-05-12 12:59:54.0

Comments: I was assigned to Co. "C" 1903rd EAB from Jan to July 1954 at Suwon as just another construction hand. From there we transferred (as a unit) to Co "B" of the 811th EAB and went by boat to Itami, Japan for a few months, but eventually settled on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. The airbase was called Chitose, and a more cold and barren place never existed on this earth. I got smart, told the CO I could type and served as company clerk until my departure in Nov. 55.

I must say, I'm somewhat amazed that there are still a few of us out there.

Names I remember: Ellery Okada, Harry Gannon, Amos Kawee, Sylvester Kubiak, Duane C. Frohwein, Robert Wohlfahrt. I believe the C.O. was Lt. Ralph M. Clack.

I'll bet half these names are wrong, but the old memory can fool you at times.

For those looking for the SCARWAF patch (universally worn by all) it's a white winged sword on a Red Shield. I saw several while serving in Vietnam, but I don't think the original is available anymore.

My grandfather searved in World War 2, reason I am posting this message here, is because my grandfather was always very secretive about his time in the millitary. One of the only documents I have is a Battle Participation Credit General Order dated (2 Nov 1945) heading being HADQUARTERS 1903rd Engineer Aviation Batt APO337. I did searches for this and I only come up with information pertaining to the Korean War, which he did not participate in. I understand this is a message board pertaining to the Korean War but if anyone has any information or places where I might be able to find more info it would be greatly appriciated.. Comments: I remember no toilet paper my whole stay in Korea. No running water. No linen exchange for 6 months. When they finally had linen exchange it was dirtier than we turned in. The generator for the base blew up. They had sent the extra to Japan to be rebuilt. They finally found it in the Osan AFB junk yard. No power for 6 months. The only concern our base commander had was the VD rate.

Comments: My father was always hesitant about telling me about his experience in Korea. He never talked about it much and regreted the fact that he was drafted. To this day his memory of it will be locked away and won't come out.

He was as he states "One of the first to go to Korea and build the airfields". He didn't bring anything back with him either.

Well, going to the surplus store, I found out that the 1903 EAB did have a patch and I am still in the process of getting one. Unfortunately it is a replica.

For kicks, I am restoring a 1945 MB Willys jeep and would like to number it like one of the units but I can not find a good picture of one. His photos are usually centered around a 6x6 or his tent. Would anyone have a pix that they can copy so I can get the registration numbers correct.

Any help or information would be helpful.

Respectfully,

Comments: I was CO of the 420th Engineer Aviation Topographic Det., which was a small unit (42 to 45 men)called a detachmet because there were no intermediate levels of command between the detachment and the 419th EA Brigade. I reported directly to a one-star general (at times his job was filled by a full Colonel). We were Army Engineers attached to the Air Force (SCARWAF). We were attached to the 930th/931st EA Group for rations and routine administration, but we took operational orders directly from Brigade. I was promoted from Second Lt to First Lt while in Korea.

Keywords: Brief TDY the week after Easter, 1953 on island of Cho-do, located 60 miles SW of Pyongyang, about 3 miles offshore from enemy troops on mainland. Mission of that radar unit was to monitor enemy planes taking off from Pyongyang and give early warning so F-86 jets at Kimpo (K-14)could quickly scramble and be in the air to intercept before they reached Seoul. I was sent to the island to locate a drill hole to supply the radar unit with water. The hole was never drilled. There was artillery fire coming in from the mainland, and we put in sea water evaporators to use until the island was finally turned back to North Korea as a part of the cease-fire agreement.

Comments: I arrived at K6 in July '54 about two weeks before they stopped giving out the Korea Service medals. I was a supply guy right out of school at Ft. Lee, VA. They didn't need me & put me to work driving a truck for the supply division. As I recall several USAF folks seemed to have the jobs in supply. Made many trips to Seoul & vicinity on MSR in both weapons carrier and 2/12 ton. Went to Suwon TDY to the company there to help pack up when we got word we were deactivating. Also assigned as a train guard when we shipped vehicles to Masan for disposal. In Late December I was transferred to the 839th at K-55 (Osan) where I spent my last six months. Worked there in "A" company pulling details for a few weeks. Detailed to USAF Air Police for a month with, what I suppose you would call, the "vice squad." Raided Whore houses for a month, then detailed the remainder of my time to Air Force supply on the base. Transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood after they changed my MOS to Combat Construction Spec. Moved to Operation Sagebrush in Louisiana for three months then back to Leonard Wood for separation as E-4 and transfer to Iowa National Guard Infantry company for reserve duty. Joined the Air Force and spent better part of 20 years in broadcasting (AFRTS) and public affairs. Retired from military in 1979. Anyone out there who might have served with me?
