Comments: Recently when I joined NROTC and decided to set my career path in the military, my grandfather PFC Donald Allen gave me what little he has left of his Korean War memorabillia, and my grandmother told me only what units he may have served in. The 196th Field Artillery Battalion, and of course the 187th Field Artillery Battalion.
He presented me with his first Garrison cover, a ribbon that my grandmother gave him the day he deployed, his United Nations Service ribbon, his Korean War ribbon with 2 bronze stars upon it, his lapel insignia, and something that I have never seen before on the uniform of any of my family members: his Presidential Unit Citation. I double checked my Blue Jacket's Manual, and sure enough, that's what it was.
As he has sworn never to speak of Korea again, I am seeking to find out what battery he may have been part of, who his brothers in arms were, and any major involvement that others from the unit may have had with him.
He spent years of his life in Korea, years that he has never spoken of. In the interests of doing away with the reputation of "The Forgotten War", I would like to find a resource or person from which I can uncover the truths of the ground battle, as ugly as the truths may be. Also in the interests of preserving my family's proud military history as well (serving in wars since WWI), I want to fill in the blanks.
If you knew my grandfather, or have any information that may be useful to my search for information, PLEASE contact me through my email addresses (jalle024@odu.edu or midshipmanjcallen@yahoo.com) or on my cellular phone: (757) 581-8345
Fair winds and following seas,
Very Respectfully
